  1. 1. cloth or plastic?

I have been a Marvel Legends collector since that line started and I have always wanted a 6-inch Star Wars line.. which I thought would have happened when Hasbro took over the Marvel license and hired some of their Marvel Legends creators.. and it's finally happening!

but one MAJOR concern I have is how they will handle capes/robes/coats/etc.

Marvel Legends have always used a very flexible plastic for their capes (for the most part). And I feel that this works very well to allow poseability and it also looks great.. much better than soft goods cloth IMO

However, the Star Wars line has always featured real cloth for their figures.. and I worry that this will continue for the 6 inch line.

I have to say, if they put real cloth on these figures, I will probably skip the entire line.

But I guess we will find out soon when we see Darth Maul.

So what do you guys prefer?

Heh im the opposite of you Clam, if they go with plastic then im out.

Same here! Think of how many figures will look like 6" blocks just sitting there if they go with plastic. Emperor, his Royal Guards, any Jedi with a robe or cape....For people who want the poseability and articulation, I don't see how you would want plastic. How will you get the Darth Maul in dynamic poses with a big plastic skirt down around his waist and knees?

Cloth goods eliminates the need to make multiple versions of the same character buy just doing ONE good version one time:

With certain guys like Obi Wan, if you go with plastic, now you're going to have to have 2 figures when you could have easily had just one. Obi wan with robe and "Millenimum Falcon training" Obi Wan without robe (you may even need a third version of the same character if you want his "hood up" look). With cloth goods, you can just take it off! Now you only need hasbro to do ONE good Obi Wan. And how, oh HOW would a plastic goods Obi Wan sit in a Luke Speeder if it were ever made???

With Darth Vader, you could have him displayed as A New Hope, or ESB/ROTJ by simply putting his vest over or under his chest armor, like with my talking 12" figure.

One thing with the 3 3/4" figures, particularly the modern Vintage line, is that I liked the cloth capes and robes. Even on the smaller figures I thought they were OK. For 6", it almost HAS to be cloth.

i prefer plastic. whenever i see cloth capes/jackets/robes on 6 inch figures, they never look natural. they are always bulky and the wrinkles never fall naturally.

I agree.. a small cape on the back or a mini-skirt is one thing, but when the whole character is flowing robes... I think even the softest plastic would ruin it. What I'd hope they do, is something similar like the did with Ronin and the Ninjas. Make most of the the figure w/ soft plastic areas, but if there is a whole robe, I would hope they go with cloth.

If they do something like this, they'll alienate a lot of Star Wars fans:

Besides, it's not like the've never had cloth clothing in the ML line.. Mr. Fantastic, Thing, Beast, punisher, Dr. Octopus,Hulk,Gambit, Blade, and of course, SDCC She-Hulk and Stan the Man Lee... ;)

I think if they take the same approach, it'd be just as good. If it's just a cape here and there, they yeah, a soft plastic cape would be fine, maybe an exclusive here and there for Vader with cloth cape and skirt.. but for the Jedi and sith with big flowing robes, I sure as heck do not want anything like what Mandarin looks like, lol.

I say plastic, because I don't think cloth worked well on any of the ML figures other than the two SDCC (Stan and She-Hulk). As far as the final dual Obi Wan and Training Obi Wan, that is easily solved with an extra head packed in. More likely, they will just offer two different versions at retail like the newer ML "running changes".

This is what I think of when I picture 6" Emperor done with plastic robes. Or my POTF 2 Royal Guard who has all the poseability of a salt 'n pepper shaker. Why would I want that in 6" form?

I was OK with the plastic capes on the MLs, but I also think the figures that got soft goods pulled it off well. The Gambit with cloth trench coat is one of my favorite MLs. He looks great!

Exactly, also, I think bringing up LotR figures shows how well using both in the right places( which I'm pretty sure is what Hasbro will do) works. Bet then again, almost all those figures had action features too.. GASP!

I picked cloth, but I think it will be a mixture of both. Seeing as they have already slated the price point for these, I would assume hasbro has already made the decision. I just hope which ever it is, that it works for posability and the overall look of the character.

there are some good arguments for cloth however, like only needing 1 figure for multiple looks. But how realistic is it that a toy company would actually make a decision that would benefit the collector! Not likely!

Short answer: Cloth, hands down.

Long answer: Pretty much spelled out already by others about articulation being hampered. And cloth can work wonderfully, even more so for this scale, if they do it like they did with some of the Jedi figures in the Target Order 66 2-packs. A thin piece of wire in the bottom.

They've improved the cloth look by leaps & bounds since the first time they used it. And having a larger canvas to work with should make it look even better.

Toybiz used plastic for the most part in their LotR line, and it didn't hamper articulation. I'd go with plastic because if their cloth I won't be picking up those figures.

right.. plastic worked great for those guys.

check out this Gandalf... 100X better looking than anything you could ever get with cloth

I think that this Mandarin is an exception to the rule.. they were trying something new there, and it didn't work.

IMO, all the ML figures with cloth looked stupid. That Gambit even looks way better if you swap out his coat with the plastic one that came with the X-treme Gambit later on.

different strokes for different folks I guess

I picked cloth, Mandarin is a perfect example why plastic does not work. If there's a vehicle for this line everyone will start complaining that plastic robes etc wont allow their figures to fit.

I don't think there will ever be vehicles for this line... or maybe in like 5 years

and see, your example of a "good cloth" looks like garbage to me. I would never buy a figure with that. it looks like homemade lol

oh well.. it seems like fans are either love it or hate it with plastic vs cloth.. we'll see who Hasbro is going to pursue as customers in a week hopefully

I collect the DCUC line not Marvel and as Pixel Dan would say about it the plastic ...its plyable :P Hopefully this will have "plyable" plastic

Well I can see Boba Fett having some cloth and Lando having a "plyable" cape

So i'm in the middle and like both

I'm talking more about the fact it's got a wire in the base that allows for the material to be adjusted however one likes. Seeing as that's a very short figure they were kind of limited with the cloth type to be used. I'd much rather have a 6" Vader or Maul designed like that as opposed to a static plastic cape. It's much more useful & dynamic.

And yes, I did mention the cloth has been getting better. That figure is a couple of years old at least. And with 6" scale figures the cloth look can be pretty excellent. Beast's lab coat is quite spiffy, as is Rogue's jacket. Seeing as they've had quite a few years to work on cloth for figures Jedi & Sith robes with the wire gimmick should turn out great.

I agree that the soft goods included with Star Wars figures have gotten much better in recent years. I used to prefer sculpted capes and robes. But anymore it seems to me that the cloth stuff seems much more authentic. It also gives the collector the feeling that a company has gone the extra mile to include real cloth details, and it doesn't hinder articulation either. I prefer the real cloth capes and robes. Plus, I think with this larger line, the cloth will be bigger naturally, so it will fold and hang much better; it seems that with the smaller scale, the cloth wouldn't always hang or wear naturally. Meh...I really don't care, as long as I get my long-awaited 6-inch Star Wars figures. (lol)

I think a mix of both is what's needed.

I'm pretty sure this is what we'll see. short jedi lil' skirt thingies, will most likely be plastic, long flowing jedi/sith robes will most likely be cloth. I guess only time will tell.
