Well, I haven't seen it YET but I'm going tomorrow with still no clue about who the Cumberbach character is. That in itself is a win, I think. Up yours, Internet Age!

Anyway, I won't be back here until after I've seen it so feel free to spoil away..... @trek@

Just saw it and WOW!! ...I mean WOW!!!!!! This movie was so good, I wanted to smoke a cigarette after, ..and I stopped smoking years ago.

There are so many things about the film that just geeked me out. Just off the top of my head, for years fans had often wondered what if Spock and Khan (yes, it is Khan) fought? How would that go? Well, pretty damn cool.

Another thing I loved was that this film showed that Starfleet really is a bunch of "cowboys". Just when they are about to fire Kirk for being insubordinate, the top brass proves to be worse.

Now it is stated that their "5 year mission" starts. I just hope we get another film before 5 MORE years go by.

Other comments I'd like to make, ...

- It was a smooth running show. There was not one moment that wasn't cool as hell to watch. So far the BEST Sci-Fi film I can imagine, excluding the classics like Star Wars and Tron. By far the Best Star Trek Film Ever!!

- BIG QUESTION?? ...was there ever a Botany Bay? Originally it was a ship deep in space. This time a rogue Starfleet General unlocked the cryo-tubes before Kirk originally discovered them. How did Admiral Marcus find Khan?

- I REALLY enjoyed all of the new interior and exterior shots of the Enterprise. Keeping the Enterprise our most desired dream as fans is what sells, and this film sells it well.

I liked it a lot as well for a lot of the reasons Captain said.

I'll admit that I was kind of skeptical of the movie coming in. Didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. At the beginning when Kirk was getting reemed for his irresponsibility, I was afraid we were getting another one of "those" movies. Kirk quickly turned it around, however. I was entertained the whole time.

The movie was well acted, particularly by Cumberbach and Quinto. It appears new Spock is a bit less in control of his emotions that old Spock. I'm fine with that.

I suspected, but did not know for sure, that it was Khan. Good job on him. This movie had so many references to ST II (and other ST lore) and yet it did not feel like a remake. I actually thought it was really cool flip flopping Spock with Kirk and having him be the one to sacrifice himself at the end.

All the characters got their time in...got a chance to do something.

Two nit picks (that aren't really nit picks):

1. "We can't beam him up because __________." This excuse was used, what, four times at least?" They can't beam Spock and Khan off a moving object? But they could beam Kirk and Sulu out of a freefall in the first one? And they had no problem beaming Uhur ON? This gets a pass however because TOS, TNG, DS9, And Voy have ALL done this at some point. Come up with a reason why their technology just won't work this time. There's a rich history of this all throughout ST.

2. There was NO reason for Marcus to change her suit in front of Kirk. Kirk wasn't even the one going with her onto the planet! This gets a pass however because Alice Eve is a smokin' hottie.

Neither of these affected my enjoyment of the movie.

With Star Wars coming up, I'd be surprised if Abrams directed another Star Trek. I'd like him to, but I'd be surprised. If this is it for him, he gave us two solid ST movies.

3 1/2 stars.

The movie was quite entertaining, but I think Abrams went too far with the lens glare. There was a time when Uhura was talking, and for about a second you could only see the bottom of her face because of a blinding light on the rest of the screen. I feel he really needed to dial that back. I liked the reference to Section 31 since it was a big part of DS9.

Into Darkness definitely surpassed my expectations the only thing I was disappointed with was the amount of screen time the Klingons received I went into the theater expecting them to be a major faction and receive at least 45 minutes of screen time but this is pretty minuscule and doesn't really take away from the film as that fight scene on Kronos was just epic in every sense of the word

The sad thing here is that half the press I'm seeing about this movie is that it made a "measly" $70 million and that it's "only" the third highest grossing movie of the year. Because in this day, if a movie's not smashing records, it's a disappointment. Even if the movie is good.

The problem is that apparently the studio was expecting more money than it made in the opening weekend. It's not necesarily that the movie hasn't made money it's that they wanted more of course one will have to compare invested money/budget vs. what it has made so far to judge. You have a point in that every studio nowadays just want 150 million dollars in the first weekend, I guess that's why they go for sequels so much.

So my fiance and I watched both Star Trek and Into Darkness and she liked both which made her interested in the original movies. I have them all and she wanted to start with The Motion Picture. I warned her that it was a bit......slow, in comparison to the new ones (I'm a ST fan and I love the original cast as much as anyone, but even I was only able to make it all the way through TMP once in my whole life.) Sure enough, both her and I were struggling to make it through the movie. I like to think I have a pretty good attention span, I DON'T need explosions and action going on every 5 seconds for me to enjoy a movie, but my God! How many scenes were there of a ship crawling slllllllooooooooooowwwwwwly through space??? With at least one shot of every facial expression of every character involved in the scene??? I just hope it didn't turn her off to watching Wrath of Khan. Things really pick up from there.

In other ST news: Took a trip to TRU yesterday where the ST action figures from the first movie were finally, FINALLY clearanced down to $1. I think some actually sold, too. I just thought that was funny.

Well the studio projected it to make 100 million which is why 70m is a bit of a disappointment, and yes the big blockbusters in this day and age typically do make over 100 million especially when it opens early and with the addition of 3D and 3D IMAX.

I thought Into Darkness was decent but not better than the first J.J. Abrams movie. I felt a few things were off in this movie.

- My first problem was with the opening mission. This whole mission was a blatant breach of the Prime Directive. Yes Kirk is known to bend the rules but not out right blow off the biggest rule a Federation Officer is sworn to uphold. I'm not just talking about raising the ship out of the water but stepping in and saving a population from a natural disaster like that.

- Oh and why the hell did the Enterprise need to sit on the bottom of the ocean anyway? Was orbiting the planet no longer good enough? This was obviously done for purely a special effects need not a mission practical one.

- Then again totally uncharacteristically for Kirk was his lying on his captain's report about the incident. When Kirk has broken or bent the rules he made know hesitation for owning up to it and taking responsibility for it. I guess we could chalk this whole thing up to this version of Kirk being young and all but still it just bothered me.

- Like with the first J.J. Abrams movie, the villain was not fleshed out very good. Khan was handled better than the Romulan in the last one, but still if you were new to Star Trek and never saw TOS episode or even WOK you would really not know anything about this guy from this movie. I also thought they made Khan a little to superhuman in this one. Yes Kahn is stronger than a regular human but he's not Superman. He's not invincible or completely impervious to phaser fire. Kirk was still able to beat Khan in a fight albeit with the help of an iron rod.

- I think the technology in this movie has gotten way to advance. Even in Picards time I don't believe the Federation has the ability to beam from Earth to Kronos with a portable Transporter or that you can just call up someone a galaxy away with a hand held communicator. I also not sure how a guy from 300 yrs in the past albeit a smart person can come up with all this technology??? I suppose (though again it wasn't explained in this movie) that the advance tech comes from the future Romulan ship from the last movie, but still I think its to much.

- Scotty resigned his commission so I fail to see how he could just hop in to a Federation Shuttlecraft and sneak into an advance enemy installation.

- The whole Kirk and Spock reversing scene from WOK seem of off to me. First of all this version of Kirk and Spock have not been serving together long enough to have the kind of bond depicted in these scenes. The original Kirk and Spock had been serving together for over a decade by the time WOK happened, these guys maybe a year or so if that. It was also pretty clear Kirk was going to be saved by Khan's blood from the get go.

- Also not sure why you would beam Uhura down during the Spock and Kahn scene. Wouldn't you beam down a security team or something, not your communications officer?

- Finally I thought Kirk came off weak. Most the time he was saved by blind luck, not outsmarting his opponent. Spock was the one who actually saved the crew with the Torpedo's while Kirk looked like a clueless idiot most the time. It was always like a chess match with Kirk and Khan in the original Star Trek, both sides making strategic moves till finally one got the better of the other. This Kirk was like what should I do, let me just run off half cocked and hope for the best. If I was serving under this Kirk, this is not a Captain that would be instilling a lot of confidence.

So yeah I know I have a lot to nitpick about this one, but I did still enjoy it. I've seen it twice now. It's just I thought it could and should have been better. They had 4yrs to get it right and using what is arguably the greatest villain in Star Trek lore, I think this movie had so much more potential.

I agree with all that stuff about Kirk at the beginning of the movie (Kirk breaking the prime directive, hiding the ship, lying on the report). That's why I was worried at first. But like I said, I thought he cleaned up his act quick. At least he had the good sense not to fire on Kronos like the rogue admiral wanted him to.

Star Trek Into Darkness...lazily going where we've all gone before. Multi-million dollar fan wank at it's best (worst.) Put it in the rubbish bin with Doctor Who.

And I know 60's tv and film could be preachy, but c'mon...a 3 minute didactic speech at the end of the movie basically scolding us for how we handle terrorism: What fun! #US1#

I'm still thrilled about how good the movie was in comparison to much that has been put out so far this year. Ironman 3 was boring compared to this. This may be one of the best movies of 2013.

However geeks like me tend to have nit-picks, and there are just a few nit-picks I have.

1.- I am tired of seeing Kirk as wimpy. Sure, he's just as cagey and skilled as The Shat, but his brawn is lacking. I'm talking against the Klingons, the Romulans, he always seems to be catching his breath. I just hope the shot he got from Khan will boost him in future movies.

The rolls of Kirk and Spock have almost flipped. When it comes to any chess game, it was between Spock and Khan. I still do not see Kirk as a "clueless idiot" just because his discipline and self confidence is playing catch-up. Blind luck saved the original Kirk many of times. Kirk is a wild-card that keeps everything going. However, I do agree that we have seen enuff of Kirk being green.

2.- Bones needed to be more than just a metaphoric juke-box. I thought a longer talk about Khan would have made sense. McCoy could have been the bearer of bad news that Khan was proven to be dangerous INSTEAD of Original Spock, but having a Nemoy cameo was worth it.

You may be right about McCoy there. However, having any character having a LONG TALK about anything risks alienating our ADD friends whom ALL summer movies now pander to :) (I'm not saying it's right, but that's how it is) Unfortunately, while it's always good to see Nemoy, I felt the old Spock cameo was rather pointless. Basically is was New Spock saying, "We're in a jam, let's call up my old self and see if he ever dealt with something like this and ask if he can break that rule about revealing other time line events. Just this ONE time. (Until the next time we're in really bad trouble)."

But still...that's nit picking. I still liked it overall.

And I'm also glad they didn't do the Shatner cameo. I really don't see how that would work under any circumstance.

I agree, it was nice to see Spock Prime but at the same time this scene seemed kinda pointless. "Spock - who is Khan? Spock Prime - I have sworn never to give you info about the future that might effect your destiny..... but screw that Khan is this horrible guy who you must defeat at all cost."

Not to mention, Khan was almost the victim in this entire movie. Starfleet used him, blackmailed him and threatened his crew/his family to get him to do their bidding. Yes Khan manipulated the Starfleet guy to kill a ton of people in retaliation, but that didn't stop Kirk from using Khan for his own purposes to only turn around and have Kahn stunned with no real provocation, after Khan had saved Kirks life on the space jump and helped them overtake the ship. Maybe Kahn would have portrayed Kirk but maybe not. Then Starfleet instead of giving Khan a fair trial or anything just sticks him along with the rest of his people back into suspended animation forever I guess.

Yup. This is one of the downsidesides of having a more human/relatable Spock right from the start...we lose the dynamic of the conflicting voices of reason on Kirk's shoulders: Spock providing pure logic from the right, and Bones chiming in with heart on the left. Very disappointed with Bones in Darkness...also his shirts seemed a bit baggy and bunched up.

anyone else annoyed with the handheld shots during Kahn's emotional speech about his people in the holding cell? shakey shakey...why? And then a still reaction shot of Kirk...then back to shakey shakey...still reaction...shakey. Also, not a fan of "realistic" space battle shots, ie the ones where they make it feel as if the camera pov were on a ship right next to the ones in battle...shakey shakey, fake finding/bringing shots into focus amidst the action. And then regular presentational shots. It might be that it needs to be all or nothing...shoot in one style or the other but not both.

Course when you think about it the original Kahn got kinda screwed as well. Yeah he tried to capture the Enterprise in the TOS episode, but he actually welcomed Kirks decision to be beamed down to that Ceti Alpha planet and given a chance to make a civilization out of it. It was only after the planets sun exploded and the planet became inhabitable for his people and because Kirk never bothered to send anyone back to check on them that Kahn got pissed and wanted to exact revenge on Kirk.

- BIG QUESTION?? ...was there ever a Botany Bay? Originally it was a ship deep in space. This time a rogue Starfleet General unlocked the cryo-tubes before Kirk originally discovered them. How did Admiral Marcus find Khan?

It was mentioned when Vulcan was destroyed that Starfleet was out combing space. Marcus discovered Khan's ship.

That's good enough for me. ;) The Botany Bay had to exist. Marcus kept it under his hat, or Section 31's hat.

hopefully when and if JJ decides to do another trek film they'll have khan come back at some point not as a main villain but towards the end show he and his crew's empty life pods on ceti alpha V than maybe cut to show him looking up at the sky surrounded by his followers

I saw this and liked it. I am NOT a Star Trek fan. I've never seen an episode in its entirety and have only a passing knowledge of it from pop culture. We went and saw this because my wife and I had a rare date night opportunity with my mother-in-law around to watch the kids and we already saw Hangover 3 (which was atrocious btw). She wanted to see it anyway. I saw the other Abrams one because she wanted me to watch that before this one. All-in-all it was good although I have nothing Star Trek related to compare it to.

I'm glad you liked it. When telling others about the movie, I've been comparing it it Ironman 3. That seems to interest people.
