Marvel Comics Q&A thread

I really want to get back into X-Men comics, but I haven't been able to. What has been going on? Where's the Proffessor, Cyclops, Magneto, Wolvie, Jean, Beast, and company. And what's up with the wacky titles. I see X-Treme, New, and Uncanny. Whats the correlation with the three of them and where are some of my fav characters in comics now?

Mkay. A while ago, Destiny (Mystique's lover, could see the future, you remember her) had left a bunch of diaries laying around out there in the world that show the future. Storm decides that Professor X is far too powerful and dangerous (remember Onslaught?) to have these diaries, so she leads a team away from the Mansion in a way of "growing up" and moving on their own, being their own people and living their own dream. This is the X-Treme team. At first, it was Storm, Beast, Bishop, Thunderbird III (no relation to the original two, he was an Indian [REAL Indian, not Native American] who could shoot fire out of his arms), Psylocke, Rogue and Sage (Remember Tessa? Hot chick wearing black undies in the Hellfire Club? That's Sage. Turns out she was a spy for Xavier all these years, and had been an agent of Xavier's since the days of the original team). So they go out into the world looking for the diaries.

Before he left, Beast had found the cure to the Legacy Virus, and Colossus injected into himself to release it into the atmosphere, and Colossus died a hero. Shortly afterwards, with all of his Legacy victim people suddenly cured, Magneto was ready to lead a war from Genosha on the world. He kidnapped Xavier to use as a banner against the world, but Cyclops, Wolverine, Jean and a bunch of newbie X-Men (Northstar, Dazzler and a number of one-time characters that were pretty dull) rescued him. Magneto said how he didn't care that he was beaten, because the X-Men are pansies and will never kill him and he can just try again until he succeeds. So Wolverine guts him. Hehe. It was pretty cool. Unfortunately, Magneto lived. Ah well.

This is the point where the new creative teams took over in the two books, and New X-Men started. I won't give away any story details... you should just pick up the trade paper backs. Take a look at Marvel.com, they have a list of the X-Men trades since the changes a few years back. Other than Joe Casey's crap run in Uncanny, the stories have been extremely interesting.

The current line-ups:

Uncanny X-Men, which is the traditional X-Men super hero strike team:

Archangel (co-leader)

Nightcrawler (co-leader)

Iceman

Northstar

Husk

Juggernaut

Wolverine (backup character)

Chamber (backup character)

New X-Men, which is the team of teachers at the Xavier Institute:

Professor X (tends to be in New more often than Uncanny)

Cyclops

Phoenix

Wolverine

Beast

Emma Frost

Xorn

Not to mention a number of neato new student mutants at the mansion that you'll get to know.

X-Treme X-Men, which I've explained:

Storm (leader)

Bishop

Sage

Cannonball

These four are the current team as of right now

Gambit (on leave)

Rogue (on leave)

Guy's who have left and probably won't be back soon:

Thunderbird III

Psylocke

Beast

Slipsteam

Lifeguard

Any other specific preguntas?

Very interesting indeed. I guess having SO many characters has to split it into three books with three X-Teams. Its been a while since I read the X-books and the Onslaught saga was around the time that I stopped reading. I picked up and tried to get back into it, but was REALLY confused. Growing up with certain characters being villian and now having them as heroes is REALLY strange(White Queen, Juggernaut, etc.) I wonder where Cable, X-Force, X-Factor, and Excalibur have been. I guess they all disbanded and some retired and some joined the X-Men again. Why does Beast look FREAKIER than ever?

Growing up with certain characters being villian and now having them as heroes is REALLY strange(White Queen, Juggernaut, etc.) I wonder where Cable, X-Force, X-Factor, and Excalibur have been. I guess they all disbanded and some retired and some joined the X-Men again. Why does Beast look FREAKIER than ever?

X-Factor disbanded in the late 90's after the "death" of Havok (his mind was actually stuck in another dimension, but that's a long story... he's back now, in Uncanny). Most of the characters appearing in at that time have been discarded, while others have made occasional appearances elsewhere, but not been given major roles. Any specific characters you want to know what's up with, just say their name and we'll do our best.

Cable joined the X-Men after Cyclops' "death" (he got better too...), served with them until Cyclops returned and Apocalypse was killed. He then started wandering the world, solving problems in his own ways. He cured himself of his biomechanical virus thing, and for a while was left with uncontrollable powers. His book was relaunched as Soldier X, and he is no longer ever called Cable, only Nathan. He regained control of his powers, and is now pretty much limited only by his imagination. His book is cancelled, and he's currently appearing as the leader of The Underground in the current arc of Weapon X.

X-Force faked their deaths, twice, going underground. With them gone, a corporate-run media-friendly group grabbed the name and ran with it, which brought the originals out of hiding. The corporate group eventually renamed themselves X-Statix, while the original group disbanded, with cast-members spread out through various titles, as well as being dumped into character limbo.

Excalibur disbanded after the marriage of Captain Britain and Meggan. All the former X-Men members returned to the X-Men. The rest of the characters pretty much disappeared from usage. A couple years ago, there was an Excalibur miniseries, but the group consisted of Cap, Meggan, Captain UK, Black Knight, and Psylocke, and was only together for the length of 4 issues, during which Brian became king of Otherworld, and got his powers back, a new costume, and the sword Excalibur.

Beast looks freakier than ever for various reasons.

Real reason - Grant Morrison felt that that's the way a character named Beast should look, told Frank Quitely so, and that's what we got.

Defensive New X-Men fanboy reason: Morrison and Quitely felt that it allowed for some interesting new stories, and it looks cool! ;)

Anti-New X-Men fanboy reason: Because Morrison and Quitely are talentless no-good hacks who thought it would be "kewl" to mess with a beloved character. ;)

In story Morrison reason: A new phenomenon, called secondary mutation, has begun effecting certain mutants in their late 20's. Beast's secondary mutation has made him more cat-like in appearance. Emma's has given her a diamond form. Jean's has given her back her telekinesis (which Claremont had taken away during his return to the books).

In story Claremont reason: After getting a near-fatal beating at the hands of mysterious new villian Vargas (no, not the pin-up artist Alberto Vargas), Beast lay in a coma. Computer-minded mutant Sage did something to him to help him recover, or something, which may have triggered his secondary mutation. She has been shown to be able to trigger mutations in latent mutants, as well as alter the powers of existing mutants.

Also, a number of former X-Team characters have shown up in the X-Corporation. What was first a villainy plot by Mystique and Lady Mastermind, controlling Banshee to start a war in Europe between men and mutants, has now become a world-wide corporation of mutant superheroes and ambassadors led by Xavier. There are branches all over the world (Paris, California, India, Hong Kong), each with different members. From what I remember...

Paris:

Cannonball

Siryn

M

Multiple Man

Rictor

Darkstar

I know there were a couple of others, but I can't for the life of me remember who they were.

India:

Proudstar

Feral

Thornn

Sunfire

Hong Kong:

They showed up in New X-Men Annual 2001, which I haven't picked up, but I know Domino was there. Ecc?

California:

Going to show up in an upcoming X-Treme story arc, and I think all we know so far is that Sunspot is part of it.

The Underground that Eccentrik mentioned is just that, an underground military team working against the Weapon X team. For the record:

The Underground:

Nathan Summers

Domino

Blaquesmith

Maverick

Meltdown

Weapon X:

Sauron

Marrow

Wild Child

Sabretooth

Aurora

Mesmero

There's a couple of others, but I think they're all new characters, but I could be missing a few.

Also, a group of original New Mutants are coming back to the Mansion to be new teachers to a new generation of kids, who humorously refer to them as the "Old Mutants."

Magma

Wolfsbane

Mirage

Karma

I think that this covers just about everybody. I'd personally love to see Strong Guy and Shatterstar come out of limbo, but that probably won't happen anytime soon. Ah well.

Anything I missed?

Also, a number of former X-Team characters have shown up in the X-Corporation.  What was first a villainy plot by Mystique and Lady Mastermind, controlling Banshee to start a war in Europe between men and mutants, has now become a world-wide corporation of mutant superheroes and ambassadors led by Xavier.  There are branches all over the world (Paris, California, India, Hong Kong), each with different members.  From what I remember...

A common confusion: Banshee's group was called X-Corps, and was completely seperate from Xavier's X-Corporation (X-Corp for short), despite the similarity in names. X-Corporation actually predates X-Corps, as it first appeared during a New X-Men Annual, while Joe Casey was still finishing off his poptopia arc in Uncanny.

Paris:

Cannonball

Siryn

M

Multiple Man

Rictor

Darkstar

I know there were a couple of others, but I can't for the life of me remember who they were.

That's all for the X-Corporation team.

X-Corps included Banshee, Multiple Man, M, Jubilee, Husk, Avalanche, Blob, Sunpyre, Radius, and a couple others whose names escape me, though one of them was actually Mystique in disguise.

India:

Proudstar

Feral

Thornn

Sunfire

Hong Kong:

They showed up in New X-Men Annual 2001, which I haven't picked up, but I know Domino was there.  Ecc?

Domino was the only member we saw living, but Risque had been working with her, until being killed, at which point Domino called in the X-Men (Beast, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Wolverine).

California:

Going to show up in an upcoming X-Treme story arc, and I think all we know so far is that Sunspot is part of it.

Washout, who actually first appeared as a minor-leaguer trying to make the cut trying out for X-Force/X-Statix. He failed, and was recruited into Weapon X.

something X, mysterious, not much known about him. Was going to say he was called Agent X, but that's another guy, as is Soldier X. Speculation was that this was Maverick, until he appeared as part of the Underground.

Also, a group of original New Mutants are coming back to the Mansion to be new teachers to a new generation of kids, who humorously refer to them as the "Old Mutants."

Magma

Cannonball is now part of the X-Treme X-Men group, which, for the current arc at least, features Storm, Wolverine, Bishop, Sage, Cannonball, and Kitty Pryde.

Characters not created by Morrison appearing in the current arc of New X-Men: Bishop, Sage, Emma Frost (sort of), Cyclops, Professor X, Beast, Phoenix. Nightcrawler cameo'd, but will not likely play any larger role.

Characters currently featured regularly in Uncanny X-Men: Havok, Polaris, Nightcrawler, Professor X, Juggernaut, Northstar, Husk, Archangel, Iceman.

The upcoming issues of Uncanny feature a wedding, or at least an attempted one, and will feature many characters guest-starring, though none from X-treme.

Jubilee is also expected to appear in a one-issue story featuring her, Husk, and Archangel... speculation is that she may not make it out alive, though it's only speculation at this point. Austen HAS said that there are limits to Archangel's new secondary mutation healing ability (which has so far revived Husk from death or near it twice, Juggernaut from fatal wounds once, and Guardian from death once... which brings Guardian to a Marvel leading 50 million deaths and revivals), and that they will be revealed soon.

Wow, I did not know Colossus died  . What issue was that in, and do you think that they will ever bring him back?

Man, a lot has happened since I stopped collecting the X-books. That was about 5 years ago. I have got a lot of catching up to do. Had any other characters died?

I didn't see this mentioned; but, Eccentrik explained this a few weeks ago..

Angel also has a healing factor in his blood (his secondary mutation) which was used to heal Husk (sister of Cannnonball, former member of Generation X, current love interest) and Juggernaut(?)

Good. Freaking. God. That is a crapload of info to digest...

Could I get some info on Juggernaut joining up?

And how did Psylocke... well you know..

And what are all the X-men titles currently in print. I think I might start picking them up again.

Aw, c'mon now. Why have me tell you when you can easily find these recent issues and check it out for yourself. Psylocke's little accident took place in the first few issues of X-Treme, and Juggernaut's story is in the Uncanny X-Men TPB "Hope."

Current titles:

Uncanny X-Men

New X-Men

X-Treme X-Men

Wolverine

Exiles

X-Statix

Mystique

New Mutants

White Queen

Might have missed a couple.

What happened to Psylocke?

From the Marvel handbook site:

"... Betsy fought the villain Vargas and was stabbed in the stomach. Though she died almost immediately, her spirit did remain long enough to provide her teammate Bishop with some information as to the mission before disappearing."

Eccentrik did an overview of the various X-characters in this thread:

Current titles:

Uncanny X-Men

New X-Men

X-Treme X-Men

Wolverine

Exiles

X-Statix

Mystique

New Mutants

White Queen

Might have missed a couple.

Uncanny X-Men - Written by Chuck Austen. Rotating art team. Artists so far (only looking at Austen's run, not Casey's) have included Ron Garney, Sean Phillips, Kia Asamiya, and Phillip Tan. Someone named Steve Kim will illustrate an upcoming issue, Phillips will apparently do another somewhere along the line. Garney is the main artist, in theory. Stories are set mostly at the mansion, pay attention to old continuity points, and are quite soap-opera.

New X-Men - Originally entitled just X-Men, changed titles when Morrison took over. Written by Grant Morrison. Rotating art team. Artists so far have included Frank Quitely, Igor Kordey, and Phil Jiminez. Jiminez is doing the current arc, and the next arc will be illustrated by Chris Bachalo. Marc Silvestri was slated to do the issues that are now Bachalo's: I'm unsure if Silvestri will still illustrate an arc. Stories are Morrison-ish. Weird, in other words. Centered mostly at the mansion, and to a much greater extent than Uncanny show that that the mansion is once again a school.

X-Treme X-Men - Written by Chris Claremont. Original series artist Salvador Larroca has been shifted to Namor, and replaced beginning with the current arc by Igor Kordey. Most stable artistic team of the three big X titles. Follows the adventures of a team of X-Men who have split from the mansion based groups for reasons originally of trust, and now of ideology. Stories are Claremontian: wordy, but Claremont fans will likely enjoy. Non-fans need not apply.

X-Men Unlimited - Anthology title, different creative team/teams each issue. Originally a quarterly, has undergone repeated revamps and publishing schedule changes, now up to one or more issue per month, at times. As with virtually any anthology, story subject and quality varies. Impact on other three titles is usually minimal, but recent issues have included two stories relating to Uncanny written by Austen, as well as a New Mutants story by Claremont, and one covering where Lockheed's been.

Wolverine - Current volume coming to a close. New volume launches in the summer with Greg Rucka writing, Darick Robertson providing art. Series will focus on what Logan does away from the X-Men. No costume, guest-stars kept to a minimum (Nightcrawler does have an appearance slated at some point during the first year). Series does not and will not make reference to events featuring Logan in any of the other titles.

Exiles - Written by Judd Winick, with a rotating art team of Mike McKone and J. Calafiore. Winick and McKone have both signed exclusive contracts with DC: McKone will no longer be working on the series, but Winick has a year's worth of scripts already in, so his work will continue to appear. Chuck Austen will be writing five issues of the book to pad those out, illustrated by Clayton Henry. Henry will then take McKone's place in the rotation, alternating Winick-written arcs with Calafiore. Focuses on a group of mutants from various alternate dimensions, forced to travel from dimension to dimension setting events along the right path. Three issues of Austen's arc will feature characters from Uncanny, and have events relevant to events there. Uncanny readers might want to pick those ones up.

X-Statix - Written by Peter Milligan, art by Mike Allred. Fill-in/back-up artists have included Paul Pope, Phillip Bond, and Darwyn Cooke. Title is currently on a two-issue hiatus, replaced in the line-up by a Wolverine/Doop team-up by Milligan and Cooke. X-Statix focuses on a corporate run, media-friendly team of disfunctional mutant celebrity superheroes.

Mystique - New series, part of the Tsunami publishing initiative. Written by Brian K. Vaughan, art by Jorge Lucas, covers by Joseph Linsner. Mutant shapeshifter terrorist Mystique is persuaded to work as an undercover agent for Professor X.

New Mutants - New series, first issue not out yet, also part of Tsunami. Written by Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir, with art by Keron Grant and covers by Josh Middleton. Will feature some of the original New Mutants coming back to the mansion to teach a new generation. Despite sharing a setting with both New and Uncanny, casts and stories will not overlap, with the exception of cameos.

Emma Frost - New series, arrives in July, also part of Tsunami. Written by Karl Bollers with Grant Morrison serving as script consultant. Illustrated by Randy Green, with covers by Greg Horn. Initially, at least, the series will focus on a teenage Emma, years before she became the White Queen.

Weapon X - Written by Mark Tieri, art by Georges Jeanty. Focuses on a new Weapon X program run by a man who survived Logan's escape from the original, barely. Recruits both mutants and powered humans, whether they want to be recruited or not. Does not take no for an answer. Recruits are powerboosted and modified, brain-washed to varying degrees, and serve the Director's agenda, which needless to say isn't a shiny happy sort of deal.

Ultimate X-Men - Set in a different timeline/universe. Written by Mark Millar until after next issue, when Brian Michael Bendis takes over for six issues. Writer after that is unknown. Artists on the title have included Adam Kubert, Andy Kubert, Kaare Andrews, and David Finch. Adam Kubert will illustrate Millar's last issue, with Finch illustrating the Bendis arc. X-Men as modern teenagers.

Given this thread's repurposing as a general Marvel Q&A, I'll continue my little one-paragraph infobites, covering all of Marvel's ongoing titles (except the X titles already covered):

MAX - Marvel's mature readers line

Alias - Written by Brian Michael Bendis, art by Michael Gaydos, covers by David Mack. Focuses on private investigator/sometime bodyguard/former superhero Jessica Jones. Sometimes events overlap with events in Daredevil, but neither title requires the other to be read.

The Eternal - Upcoming. Written by Chuck Austen, art by Kev Walker. Based on an old Kirby idea, but reinterpreted, and not set in the Marvel universe.

Marvel Knights

Captain America - Undergoing repeated creative revamps. Chuck Austen has taken over from John Rey Neiber on writing, but will apparently not be on the book for long. No word on a replacement. Artists so far have included John Cassaday, Trevor Hairsine, and Jae Lee. Cassady continues as cover artist. Series focuses on Cap's adventures away from events in Avengers, and does not overlap with that title.

Daredevil - Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Art by Alex Maleev. Focuses on lawyer/crimefighter Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Events seen in this title also occasionally are seen in the MAX title Alias, as the star of that book, Jessica Jones, has been employed by Matt Murdock.

Elektra - New creative team. Written by Robert Rodi, art by Sean Chen. Covers by Bill Sienkiewicz. Series follows the Greek ninja assassin as she goes around killing people for money.

Punisher - Written by Garth Ennis. Art usually by Steve Dillon, though Cam Kennedy will illustrate a coming arc. Covers by Tim Bradstreet. Series follows the former military man as he goes around killing people for free.

EPIC - Marvel's newest imprint. Too complicated to explain here.

Crimson Dynamo - Upcoming (July). Written by John Jackson Miller. Art by Steve Ellis. Series explores what would happen if someone found a spare Crimson Dynamo prototype in Russia. Will be set pretty much entirely in Russia, so Iron Man appearances will be infrequent or nonexistant.

Tsunami - loose grouping of titles inspired in part by manga storytelling approaches and formats, but NOT art, for the most part

The Crew - Written by Priest, art by Joe Bennett. Follows three (later four) heroes as they try and make a difference in an area of New York called Little Mogadishu. Characters include James Rhodes/War Machine, Kevin Cole/the would be Black Panther, and Danny Vincente/Junta. The fourth character will spin out of the Truth miniseries, and is at least rumoured to be the son of the black Captain America featured there.

Human Torch - Written by Karl Kesel, art by Skottie Young. Solo adventures of Johnny Storm. First issue was set during his highschool years, but the main focus will be in the modern era, apparently. No interaction with the main Fantastic Four title.

Inhumans - Written by Sean McKeever, art by Matthew Clark, covers by Jose Villarrubia. Follows a group of Inhuman youths as they participate in an exchange program, attending an American university.

Namor - Written by Bill Jemas and Andi Watson, pencils by Salvador Larroca, inks by Danny Miki. Follows the pre-Marvel Comics #1 adventures of a teenaged Namor in the 1930's.

Runaways - Written by Brian K. Vaughan, art by Adrian Alphona, covers by Jo Chen. Follows a group of loose-knit teenagers who run away together after finding out their parents share a dark secret.

Sentinel - Written by Sean McKeever, art by UDON. Series focuses on a highschool boy whose life is changed when he finds a heavily damaged Sentinel robot.

Venom - Written by Daniel Way, art by Francisco Herrera, covers by Sam Keith. Follows the Venom symbiote, which now has the ability to jump from host to host. Eddie Brock WILL appear.

Marvel

Amazing Spider-Man - Written by J. Michael Straczynski, pencils by John Romita Jr., inks by Scott Hanna. Covers by various, including J. Scott Campbell, Frank Cho, Mike Deodato Jr., Jason Pearson, and John Romita Jr. Flagship Spider-Man title. Follows highschool science teacher/costumed hero Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Avengers - Written by ###### Johns, art by Olivier Coipel, covers by J.G. Jones. Johns run will be cut short, as he has signed a DC exclusive contract, but he has over ten issues of Avengers left before he goes. Series follows the adventures of the Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Black Panther - Written by Priest, art by Patrick Zircher. Ends in July. Followed the adventures of King T'Challa of Wakanda, and now his apparent successor, NYPD narcotics officer Kevin Cole.

Captain Marvel - Written by Peter David, pencils by Ivan Reis, digital paint colouring by Chris Sotomayor. Covers by a different big name cover artist pretty much every issue, including Alex Ross, Phil Noto, Walt Simonson, and Carlos Pacheco. Explores what happens when cosmic awareness hits someone who's not quite ready for it. The slightly insane (he destroyed the entire universe, but it got better) Captain Marvel shares a mental link with professional sidekick Rick Jones.

Fantastic Four - Written by Mark Waid, art by Mike Wieringo. Follows the adventures of the super powered family of explorers.

Incredible Hulk - Written by Bruce Jones, art by Mike Deodato Jr., covers by Kaare Andrews. Follows Bruce Banner as he runs from mysterious pursuers who seek to harness the power of the Hulk for their own ends.

Iron Man - Written by Robin Laws, art by Michael Ryan. The adventures of billionaire industrialist and publicly known superhero Tony Stark.

Kingpin - (May actually be a Marvel Knights book, it's unclear at this point). Written by Bruce Jones, layouts by Sean Phillips, finishes by Klaus Janson. Covers by Essad Ribic. Follows the rise of Wilson Fisk. First arc will focus on a teens/early twenties Fisk as he makes a name for himself, second will focus on his childhood. Later arcs may eventually bring the character up to the present.

Peter Parker: Spider-Man - Ends in June. Written by Zeb Wells for final issues, with art by Sam Keith.

Silver Surfer - Launches in July. Written by Dan Charlton and Stacy Weiss. Art by Milx. Cover by Joe Jusko. Mysterious new take on the chromed cosmic character.

Spectacular Spider-Man - Launches in July, replaces Peter Parker: Spider-Man. Written by Paul Jenkins, art by Humberto Ramos. Secondary Spider-Man title, will feature appearances by well known villians from Spidey's rogue's gallery, with Venom being the foe for the initial arc. Supporting cast characters absent from recent issues of Peter Parker will return, including Randy Robertson and Glory Grant.

Spider-Girl - Written by Tom DeFalco, art by Ron Frenz. Frequently cancelled, always revived series follows the adventures of the teenage daughter of Spider-Man, in a non-scifi possible future.

Thunderbolts - Ends in July. Written by John Arcudi, art by Francisco Ruiz Velasco. Focused on an underground fighting club where failed supervillains beat each other up for money, in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

Ultimate books - a modern take on classic Marvel concepts, with new stories (not merely retellings of the old, as some seem to think)

Ultimates - Written by Mark Millar. Art by Bryan Hitch. Comes out slightly more often than such titles as Battlechasers, Danger Girl, and Fathom, which is good, because all of those titles have ceased publication. Follows the multibillion dollar super powers project the US Government funded after Magneto's assault on the White House in Ultimate X-Men's opening arc. So far, the team has yet to actually fight anyone they don't know on a first name basis (except in the Ultimate War miniseries).

Ultimate Spider-Man - Written by Brian Michael Bendis, art by Mark Bagley. Follows the adventures of a modern teenage Peter Parker, as he tries to juggle highschool, a job at the Daily Bugle, his friendship/romance with Mary Jane, and living with Aunt May and Gwen Stacy. Oh yeah, he puts on tights and fights crime, too.

The series "The Call" was originally an ongoing, but has been reduced to a limited series. I have opted not to list limited series at this point.

Titles from the above two listings that I have bought issues of in recent months: Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, Black Panther, Daredevil, Human Torch, Mystique, Namor, New X-Men, Peter Parker: Spider-Man, Runaways, Thunderbolts, Ultimates, Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, X-Men Unlimited, X-Statix...
