MOTUC: Why so many haters?

I really don't understand the whole Mattel issue though. The case assortments for MOTU during 200x, really didn't look any different than any other toyline at the time. Heroes are always packed the most in a case. Also the cases were really small. I think it was like 4 He-Man, and two 2ndary characters or something like that. So, we are looking at 6 figures total to a case. Villains had their own case.

The trouble was that you could go and buy all the secondary characters from all the cases that the stores put out, since there were so few of them. An ebay scalper could get to a store early, see a case of figures (4 Jungle Attack He-Mans, 1 Teela, 1 Orko), buy all the rare figures and leaving the 4 Jungle Attack He-Man figures on the shelves. Now imagine this scenario for every case the store has. Then imagine this happening everywhere MOTU 200X was sold. All you have left were He-Man and Skeletor variants. Scalpers selling 7-8 dollar toys for $30-40 dollars a piece on eBay. They could easily make 10 times as much as they put out. They got rich off of MOTU 200X fans who couldn't find the figures.

Unlike other lines where you could find other characters to keep the line going, MOTU 200X didn't have other characters to help sell the line because they were short packed. Nowadays, cases are divided up much better.

But this is what I don't understand- The cases are not better! The problem ultimately was that He-Man is not nearly as recognizable as he should have been. Batman is clearly packed more to a case then his villains, yet I would consider most of his toy lines a success.

What you are describing as scalpers buying all the secondary characters, well, that does happen, but not enough to kill an entire line. I bet more collectors got who they wanted in a store than the kids did. It is unfortunate that this happens, but it does. I know because I was working at TRU during the entire run of 200x. I was blamed, along with these imaginary "scalpers" whenever a collector couldn't find what he wanted. As if I controlled the production of any given toy line!

He-Man was a failure because he is not a recognizable brand anymore. You can blame Mattel for bad marketing, or bad case ratios, or whatever, but it doesn't change the fact that kids aren't into action figures.

The Batman thing is not correct b/c KIDS are buying Batman figures (with the exception of the brand new MMs figures that Mattel made for collectors), while I see your point its factually incorrect. 90% of Batman lines are for kids. He-Man is more of a collector line, while there was a new cartoon out at the time the line was mostly snapped up by collectors nostalgic for the 80's (myself included). So Mattel in all of its glory decided that since it has to be kids buying up the first wave (the only one that had a decent ratio) they need to put He-Man figures front and center and all future secondary characters need only one since very few people care about them. What Mattel didn't realize was that it was collectors buying up the He-Man and Skeletor figures from the first wave b/c that is the only decent He-Man and Skeletor that will exist (why they thought that no one cared about Man at Arms and Beast Man Idk). After that the kids weren't buying the crappy rehashes and left the line while all of us were out there trying to get our hands on the one Teela or Orko in the tri-county area with most people resorting to the internet or giving up (what I did, not spending 50 dollars on a 10 dollar figure I want to pull out of the packaging and pose). So basically blame Mattel for not producing enough figures for the line to prosper.

Right, and I am incorrect How?

He-Man was marketed to kids. Kids didn't buy enough He-Man figures. The line was considered a failure.

Its true that collectors were buying the line up, and Mattel's failure was in not seeing who there primary target was, but it doesn't change the fact that the INTENTION was to sell to kids.

Yes the intention was to sell to kids and the ratio sucked but Mattel selling all of the first wave and then just the secondary characters of the second wave should have told them something. Should have made the question there target. I basically think we are pretty much saying the same thing. Except where most Batman lines are made to sell to kids except a few just in the last year or so, they are bought mostly by kids. Collectors don't really care about Trap Clap Batman and Elvis Impersonation Robin but kids do. But MOTU and even the Playmates versions of TMNT were made for kids but it was collectors buying all the secondary characters and neither company figured out who were buying there secondary characters (even to this day Playmates never geared any the line to better ratios of secondary characters). Sorry if I made the earlier post sound like I was being a jackass. I meant the Batman line info to be about the line made for kids with mostly kids buying where MOTU were made for kids but collectors were buying everything but the rehashes.

a mass production company's "collectors" line, is nothing more than " more articulated" figs. if a fig reaches past 19 POA with no action feature, its a collectors line. 200X secondary figs were on pegs here for soooo long........they went on sale.(orko, teela, roboto, man-e-faces, snakemen, ect....) ive noticed that the adult collector(for the most part) loves to play the blame game, and will continue to place blame everywhere but where it counts......ourselves. how is it mattel's fault that you couldnt "find" secondary characters?

By short packing them to a case. By the time I got off from work at 6pm in the scalper state of NJ, all I could find were Smash Blade He-Mans, a sure sign that those figures had been there and now they were brought up. It wasn't like those figures were so plentiful, the collectors/scalpers couldn't buy them all. Collector or scalper, either way I couldn't get them traditionally so I had to get them through eBay. Some of those 200X, I've NEVER seen out in stores. It was that bad around here.

i heard of no shortage of these figs.....scalpers get them......why cant you?

At the time, I couldn't literally camp outside of stores, waiting for them to open.

i also want to adress the "scalper" issue. a scalper's power is only as great as the people who pay him. take the Movie Masters deal for example.... alot of people wanted that heath joker back in may, they were all floating around on ebay for $200+. now....a truly understanding collector would of said "im not paying that for an action figure from a movie that wont be released for another 2 months" but NO......people jumped on ebay and bought them anyway.(bet they feel stupid) so.....if you MUST go that route.....i understand. but if youre just too damn lazy to get off of your ass and go find something, and get pissed that you cant find it at the 1st store you go to.......good for ya! collectors just b*tch all day, every day......not knowing that we make it impossible for kids to get anything.....it wouldnt of made a difference if kids would of liked this line anyway.......adults would of been the ones with all of them.

You have to consider when you can't find things when you get off from work so late or if you live in a scalper state or area. Not everyone who can't find figures is lazy.

then my statement wasnt toward you. every case isnt the same...i know, but in the cases of the people i speak of(you know who you are) my statement still stands.

Personally with all due respect to both sides on this, I believe it varies more with each toy line. MOTU is gonna have major scalpers. I made a point saying I never found and Orko and several people wrote back that he was the only secondary characters they could find. So I don't know if that makes my state a scalper state or city or just the only state or city that actually has a huge Orko fanbase. I think though with the MMs that every state became a scalper state. Everyone and there cousin were out buying Ledger Jokers. And I doubt everyone kept there Joker figure too, most put them on Ebay for huge prices. So really I think it depends on your area, store availability, and of course the fans or scalpers in the area. I mean hell I'm still looking for a MM unmasked Batman in the stores and I have the time right now and I'm still not seeing it. So who knows the reason why you can't find one thing or another in stores? It prolly all varies.

yeah....but its a defference between orko and a MM "chase" fig. see....people act as if scalpers dont have jobs. they act as if scalpers just hang around toy stores 24/7. sometime the company doesnt ship enough, or sometimes its a scalper......but alot of times its just a collector that beat you to the punch.

In my case it could have been any of the above. But I will tell you that my TRU only had two pegs of MOTU which really kind of cut down the supply something fierce.

I'll tell ya what I like.

I like Grayskull.

I like Stratos.

I SOMEWHAT like He-Man.

everything else, however, I feel that 200X did better.

at least so far.

I feel Mer-Man is largely unnecessary, as we got the exact same headsculpt with the 200X version, but I'll let it slide, as I like the paint apps on this one a little better (tho I dislike the hands).

so, I'm not completely against the line, I just think 200X was a better update.

that's not to say 200X was without its faults, it certainly could've done without most of the push-button action features, and added more articulation.

Im wondering if their plan is to guage how many "collectors" there are to get He-Man back at retail. The DC Universe figures are a collector line, and so is Movie Masters, and they are both what I'd call successful. I know they are DC brands and Highly popular, but they must realize how many fans were upset by the loss of 200x.

Its way too early to start all this doom and gloom talk. King Grayskull was a definite success, even with all the problems they had with the web site. I think that speaks well for the initial offerings...

I'd almost agree there, but to be honest DC is going to have more people collecting this toys then He-Man because DC is more far-stretching then He-Man. I collect DC Classics as well and a friend and I will be ordering the 2-packs off Mattel Collector, but if they're basing how much collectors are into DC Classics and how much they're into He-Man, then that's just bad research. DC is unfortunatly going to win that fight. That's also because DC Classics has regular waves of figures released where as He-Man only has the online figures.

Oh, I definitely agree here. I was trying to say that it seems Mattel is very interested in knowing how many MOTU fans there are. By only releasing them on their very own web site, and limiting the number bought, they will be able to tell how many collectors are out there. Or, at least the best way that is possible to them at this time.

I'm talking about my personal collecting habits, not in the line as a whole.

I don't mind that they're DOING Mer-Man, but he's unnecessary for ME to buy.

so far, I think I might buy Stratos, He-Man, and Skeletor, and leave the rest.

we'll see as those figures become available for order, I suppose, but I don't think I'll be buying Mer-Man, Beast Man, or Zodak.

I'm handling the line on a case-by-case basis.

For now, I'm going for all that we've seen pictures of. The Four Horsemen do such a good job with the sculpts that it will be hard for me to resist any of them as a MOTU fan.

Yeah, me too. I will probably make this line my number 1 collecting priority. It will be easy for me to keep up with, and The MOTU figures are all so unique that I shouldn't get bored.

Yeah, me too. I will probably make this line my number 1 collecting priority. It will be easy for me to keep up with, and The MOTU figures are all so unique that I shouldn't get bored.

i would, but.....DCUC is taking most f my money. i will invest in a few of these though.

Yeah, its funny because DCUC was my favorite line, and I have all of them, not counting chases. I just don't think I will be able to keep up when they up the case assortments. So far I have been buying them by the case online, but it will get too expensive next year.

I really hope I can find mullet Superman later this year! :P

you know that this statement contadicts your last one.

in what way?

I thought it actually streamlined and explained it.

let me lay it out simply:

1: If they don't make what I want, I will not give them any money, so, if the line tanks, I had no investment in it whatsoever, and therefore, the burden is off of me, and I am free to gloat about how the fans killed the line.

2: If they DO make what I want, I'll buy it and be happy.

either way, I'll be happy, either in my sadistic glee over the fans having nobody to blame but themselves, for the line collapsing this time, or I'll get what I want.

the only way I lose is if the line is a huge success, and I still don't get what I want, but y'know what?, I STILL won't be disappointed, because eventually they're gonna run out of characters, or ideas, and then they're gonna revert back to bad habits.

and I'm not really counting on that. This IS MOTU we're talking about, it's pretty much doomed to fail.

as for taking a toyline too seriously, believe me, it's all one huge joke to me.

WOW. thats all i can think off. WOW.

I dont get how someone can "gloat" over a product that someone else likes failing.

That would be like me saying "thank god the NECA 2pack stactions got cancelled"...or "man I am glad that stupid 200x line is done. I told everyone it would fail". So childish, ridiculous and frankly, insane.

I guess you could be trying to act "cool" or like a rebal or an individual....but come on now. You have to be one of the most damaged people I have ever run across on these forums, or any for that matter. There has to be some major personal issues in your life for you to actually think what you are saying is funny even. You may want to seek profesional help for your anger and displacment issues my friend.

On to how I feel about this line....

I loved the original figures. I even liked NA. I dug 200x and the look of the stactions. Fact is, I plain love MOTU. Ill support anything that is MOTU (unless there is some HUGE change in the characcters themselves).

But to me, this MOTUC line is the perfect incarnation of the proprty. Sure, it will loose the hyper detail the 200x line had. But it will also loose that manga/anime feel. The OVER skulpting. It will loose the creative control enforced on the 4H by Mattel. The figures will actually be able to stand up with normal posture.

Does skeletor have the same horror look from 200x? NO. But does that make him less menacing? No. Now, he looks more like a skull striped of flesh, then an alien pin head. Dont get me wrong, I have a HUGE collection of the 200x line. But it was flawed. Had it been a new seperate line, not MOTU, then it may have been the best toy line ever (except for the silly repaints like disco skeletor). However it was supposed to be a new updated MOTU. ANd to me, the perfect update from the 80's stuff is this new line.

Sure they are resusing parts. Sure I would rather have indivudual molds for each character. But I am also not footing the bill, expecially during one of the worst financail times since the Great Depression. Toys are a luxury anymore. Not a staple. They will be things that people cut out when times get hard. So for a company to try and min. its costs, I am okay with that. The 4H do a great job of little tweaks to make the characters look distinct in their own way.

But these are the figures I have always dreamed of. For those that are only fans of 200x, then you have your ideal figures. Let the rest of us enjoy ours, and dont ruin it for us.

If you dont like them, fine, but why try and spoil it for the rest of us? Why take pleasure in that? Just dont support it.

But, if you are a true MOTU fan, then you support it no matter what. He-man is family to me. And no matter what family looks like, I still lend it 20 bucks. LOL I still support it. Even if I dont like what it is doing sometimes.

Of course, this time I love what it is doing. So that makes it easier. LOL
