  1. I bought the Japanese issue and God Magnus back in the day - was it 1999/2000? Still two of the best large-scale Transformers in my collection, and ones that are on permanent display in Omega Prime combined mode. If they're re-releasing Super Fire Convoy they really should follow that up with God Magnus - they're amazing apart, but even more fun together. Tim "toy geek"
  2. Got my MMC Hexatron this weekend - what a great toy. Big, tough, well designed and super versatile. All of the six modes hold together well, with a lot more potential for additional modes. This may be the best multi-mode transforming toy I've ever had. Well worth the price, and unlike a lot of third party transformers, tough and solid enough for a lot of transforming fun. A real winner. Tim "toy geek"
  3. I saw these the last time I was in TRU and I was a little bit disappointed in how they looked - that said, I may go for a couple of sets with this deal. I was thinking of getting the set with the VAMP and the Cobra mech, and maybe the boat. Anyone have any comments on these sets, are they any good? I'm not expecting Lego quality (I have a couple of the Transformers Kre-O sets) but I like some of what they're doing. Any build problems - like Wild Bill not being able to fit under the Dragonfly's canopy while wearing his helmet - I should be able to fix with extra Lego. Are any of the blind bag minifigures exceptionally good? Tim "toy geek"
  4. And here I thought that this year was going to be pretty light because of the not-very-appealing Beast Hunters figures. I'm probably going to skip most of those, except for Smokescreen, who I predict will be impossible to find, at least at first. Maybe BH Shockwave if that armor comes off. Springer and Blitzwing look beautiful. I'm a sucker for triple changers, and these look to be two of the best Hasbro has done in the modern era. Most of those Generations deluxes look great as well - stealth bomber Megatron, Orion Pax, Trailcutter. Yes please to all. USA release of Masterpiece Soundwave with five cassettes. I'll have to use a birthday present or bonus check on it, but I'm very likely getting that. I had to restrain myself from getting the import, so it's likely I will try to get the USA release. Metroplex. Hmmmm, interesting. On the one hand, it's a blocky playset of a robot, it takes up a huge amount of space, and it doesn't really transform into much of anything, like the original. I had the original MIB and sold it years ago, because there just wasn't enough enjoyment in it to justify keeping something that big. Ditto to my loose but mostly complete Fort Max. On the other hand, it's two feet tall and has articulated pupils. Here's where having a toy rental service like Netflix would be a great idea - I'd love to time-share a Metroplex, but I don't know if I want to own one. Tim "toy geek"
  5. This looks great, and a good use of one of the better airplane transformers of recent release. Of course you're probably going to want to mod/paint up a Laserbeak or other version of the drone basic, since it's made to go with the Mindwipe mold. Not sure what character it would be, since usually SS works alone, maybe a SS clone? Tim
  6. It would be nice, especially if they could make it the equal of the third party Hegemon set, but less expensive. I never got Masterpiece Megatron, as it was very expensive and delicate, and the gun mode always poses a problem for US release. I think that would again be a concern in the USA - you saw how even the Classics Megatron had to be released in Nerf colors and lots of safety orange. But I agree, there needs to be some sort of official Megatron in some form in order to go with the new sized Prime Masterpiece. We're getting that great Soundwave later on in the year, so I imagine that, at least in Japan, there will be some sort of revised Masterpiece Megatron. I wouldn't hold my breath for a US release in a gun-mode format though. Tim "toy geek"
  7. Looks like the G2 version is coming out pretty soon, BBTS is already shipping theirs, and Amazon should be shipping soon. I am getting a G2 version to go with my SDCC version, which is unusual for me as I usually don't collect repaints. However, the G2 set was different enough and comes in a very cool retro G2 box. Should be fun to mix and match the different versions. Tim "toy geek"
  8. I have a few of the third party KO sets, the Optimus deco of the City Commander set (DIA Commander), the Battle Tanker and I just got my KO of the Protector armor. Of the three, I'd say that Battle Tanker and Protector are very good, probably about 90 - 95% quality, the Protector one is particularly nice, and doesn't seem to lack any of the features of the original, plus it comes with a red version of the Shadow Scythe. Nice piece, I got mine from a site called Toymoda.com for a decent price. I already had Classics Rodimus, it goes well with him. Battle Tanker is also really good - there are some photos online that show the KO with a messed-up face, but mine looks just like the original. The set I got came with all of the pieces including the Drift sword. There are only subtle differences in the colors and details, and it fits onto Classics G2 Optimus nicely. The DIA Commander is a nice piece, comes with an Energon Briefcase and the missile launchers, but it has some fit issues on the shoulder pieces. Not bad as a display piece, but you may have to do a little work on this one. I'm looking forward to the KO version of the green Giant. If it keeps up the high quality of the Protector and Battle Tanker sets, it should be very good. Tim "toy geek"
  9. I wound up getting the Ultra Magnus repaint of Alternity OP from Bigbadtoystore.com on one of the sales they run for a pretty good price, like $30. I could definitely see him as Jazz with a head swap. Not a bad toy, but very fragile and fiddly in the leg transformation. Actually, fragile and fiddly pretty much describes the whole Alternity line to me. I have three of them, and they're fun, but I don't keep them out to transform because I can tell that I'm going to break them by doing that. I think my favorite out of the molds is Bumblebee - he's got an interesting transformation, nice weapons, good head sculpt and alt mode. Tim "toy geek"
  10. Sneak Peek may have been kind of lame as a figure, but he was named after Steven King's son at least. Tim "toy geek"
  11. I imagine that if the initial wave of GI Joe Kre-O does well, we may see some larger sets, kind of like the Transformers Kre-O is doing a larger Devastator set now. That means we could easily see larger vehicles - Rolling Thunder, MCC, maybe even...dare I say...a USS Flagg set somewhere down the line? Certainly I could see them doing a Pit and a Terror Drome set pretty easily. You could easily repurpose some of the more recent Lego sets from the Agents years to fit in with it. Plus, and I don't think I've seen them yet, Kre-O Dreadnoks. I would definitely enjoy Lego-scale Dreadnoks to wreak havoc on all of my other Lego and Kre-O sets. Tim "toy geek"
  12. That Takara release is very nicely colored - almost makes me want to pick up a few as alternative versions, but I lucked out on hasbrotoyshop.com, so I own the SDCC version. I have to say, too, that while you're paying for the toys with the SDCC version, the showcase box is extremely nice, nearly another toy's worth of value for the set. I think there should be enough of the G2 version coming out in Nov/Dec to go around. I imagine that Amazon will find a few more of these once they start selling. This is the odd toy where I am going to own a repaint - I usually never do, but I like these a lot, and the G2 set is a great deal for those who jumped on the preorder. If you can find it at $60, I'd say pick that up. Oddly enough, all of the retail versions are in stock on Hasbrotoyshop.com except Blast Off. I'm not sure why he alone would sell out, unless people who bought the SDCC version want the blue version to replace the caramel-colored one. Tim "toy geek"
  13. I always see people selling them on Hisstank as well. Pretty much any of the major Joe boards would be a good alternative to Ebay, especially for the rarer items. Still a way underrated line, in my opinion. Some of the more fun action figures in the last ten years.
  14. I definitely plan on buying these, both the blind-bags and the vehicle sets. Kre-O isn't quite Lego quality yet, but it's a lot of fun. If the figure blind bags are like the TF early release blind bag sets, there should be identification numbers on the bags so you know which one you're getting. They aren't true blind bags like the Lego collectible minifigures, at least the ones I have aren't. Tim "toy geek"
  15. They should still be on Hasbrotoyshop.com if you just need Blast Off. Once you do get him, be sure to check out some of the alternate arm transformation schemes - FOC Bruticus is so amazing once you chuck away the instructions and try different transformations. I currently have my SDCC Bruticus with Swindle and Vortex as the legs (also pretty good as arms), Brawl as an arm - I know with the regular instructions he's not great as an arm, but there's a practical elbow joint in there - you just need to very carefully pull out Brawl's waist joint until it clicks, then he's decent as an arm, and has a shoulder turret. Blast Off I have in arm formation with the nose folded over, and the shoulder pads with their rounded sides facing into Bruticus's body. That gives the shoulder some nice-looking spiky bulk. You can either leave the legs connected together with the combiner mode hand connected, or use only one leg, or disconnect one leg (they slide apart at the thigh swivel joint easily) to get a useful elbow articulation for arm mode, and still keep the nice bulky forearm. Trust me, once you get a little creative with Bruticus, you'll really enjoy it. It's probably my favorite general-release TF this year. Tim "Toy geek"
