So who read that as "easy access to the same exact versions or slight repaints of the same exact characters over and over and over and over and over and over..."?
As for the people who are just 'getting into the line', they can EASILY find a Duke or a Storm Shadow, or any other 'main character'. If not, wait a few months and one will show up with a slightly different paint job, or in a comic pack, or in one of the other cash-grab re-uses that Hasbro likes to subject this line to. In fact, all five of the previewed figures ARE either in currently stocked/shipping merchandise, or coming up soon.
"But it's not the same version!" you cry. That's a whole different animal. This argument takes kids out of the equation, as kids generally don't care what version of a given character they have, as long as they HAVE the character. In fact, kids often want the newest version of a character... but 'new version' is entirely relative in this line. It also carries the implication that those 'just getting in' will be either be going the completist route, in which case these won't do anyway, or they MUST have these specific versions of the characters, which is yet another mixed bag of debate.
At what point, after a dozen versions of Duke, can Hasbro stop making the first version? Shouldn't they rightfully hit a point where they say "Look, sorry you missed out. Them's the breaks. Go buy Omega Force Duke." Why, with several versions of Storm Shadow readily available, should Hasbro feel that they have to put out yet another one, regardless of which version it is? Why can't those 'just getting in' buy one of the already-at-retail versions, instead of letting them sit there and demanding yet another? Even more to the point, if the pegs are already clogged with figures that aren't selling, won't the retailers balk at continuing to support the line? Isn't the common complaint that people can't find anything new because of pegwarmers? Is putting out figures that will appease the 'just getting in' crowd so that the pegwarmers can continue to rot a viable answer to how to move the product?
I support everyone having access to the characters... but they're out there. They may not be the version every collector pines for, but you know what? You come in late, and sometimes you miss out. I know that sounds harsh, but I apply it to myself as well. If I miss out on the version of a readily-available character that I wanted, then I missed out, and Hasbro shouldn't be reissuing that exact version nearly two years later just in case someone wasn't around for it. I don't feel that Hasbro should have to keep making '84 style Duke and Storm Shadow figures because there's still a few people who passed up on them the first few times and are kicking themselves now. Those who feel that the overcharging internet sites are the only other option should pay heed to the Gospel of Arrow and start networking, because there's plenty of people around here who have figures from the early days of this line who will sell them at/below retail.
I know I'm coming off like a jerk here, and it's not my intent at all. As someone who's been collecting toys for decades, I sympathize with those who missed out, but I also feel that Hasbro should be allowed to move on and stop doing the same figures/characters ad infinitum. I want to see new product for everyone, not reissues of the same old stuff for a limited segment of collectors. If you disagree with me, console yourself with the fact that Hasbro obviously sides with you.

Heh, but one of the big outcries as this line began was about accessibility and distribution. A HUGE stink was raised by people, claiming that "Hasbro stuff was always hard to find".
Well, its been addressed......and in the most logical manner possible......either flood the shelves or reissue figures over and over again.
We asked for it.........we got it...........and yet people STILL complain.
Look at it this way, original/new product can come out 4-5 times a year. That means about a 2-3 month wait for new stuff. Re-issued product can come out the same numbers of time, overlapping and alternating with new stuff, making product appear on the shelves monthly or thereabouts.
This is what people hoped for.......this is what we apparently are getting right now.
And its not enough.
Its NO WONDER collectors and fans never feel like they are being justly served......the hypocrisy of fandom is about the only constant they have.

And I still can't believe they won't release the 5-Pack Cobra Trooper straight up the same as he was in that pack. I really would like to hear the reasons for that considering "To keep the 5-Pack figures unique." has been a moot poinbt for some time now.

Hate to break it you you but eBay doesn't really rip off people. It's the buyers that tend to pay outrageous prices on stuff they really want. And, no, you probably will not find him in stores. I wouldn't mind a re-release of that version though.
I think I may pick up Roadblock and/or Gung Ho this time around.

In the old days, Hasbro used to actually do exactly what you're talking about: When they thought a "core character" had been off-shelves too long, they brought out a new version of them. That didn't mean "every single year" either. Hence the reason there were only 5 Snake-Eyes (unless you count Ninja Force and Shadow-Ninja SE as separate), 5 Dukes, 7 Cobra Commanders, 4 Destros and 3 Storm Shadows in the entirety of the original RAH run.
Yes...Stalker (4) and Hawk (5) had more figures than Storm Shadow in the original run of RAH G.I. Joe.

People are coplaining that wh've already seen too many Duke repaints (and others) and that these aren't necessary. I counter that this is actually better. Hasbro should release revision cases of figures from earlyier cases to keep "core characters" on the shelves (if they insist on that) and release new figures in place of the repains that we have been subjected to so far in the line. That way we get fewer versions of a single cahracter, more new characters, and Hasbro can still keep the core characters out there as is their want.

Ironically, you're accusing the fandom of hypocrisy, assuming that all of fandom has the same voice, while you argue with another fan. Different segments will want different things for different reasons; this is not hypocrisy, it's individuality rearing its head to defy the assumption that a collective is being addressed. When one segment is getting what they desire, then the cries of those not getting what they want become more apparent. This is largely why companies who cater to collectors end up following trends that, while catering to one segment or another, drive other portions of the fandom insane.
Sadly, this sort of understanding does nothing to actually lessen the insanity that the 'neglected' portions feel.

Yeah, and not only have many of these 'core characters' eclipsed the twelve-year run of their original versions in only two years time, some of them have double and TRIPLE the versions they originally had. There's a point when 'readily available' becomes 'over-saturation', and if we haven't hit and passed it already, we have to be dangerously close.
And to my knowledge, most people did not have problems finding these 'core characters' back in the day. I recall not being able to convince the parents to buy those characters being a much bigger concern.

A solution I'd wholeheartedly support. I have no problem with the 'readily available' concept, but the execution. I see no point in reissuing an '84 style Duke with minor paint/accessory changes multiple times on single cards, 2-packs, and DVD sets... then tossing out the 'original' version AGAIN. Why is so much space in the line that could go to other characters being taken up for him when they're just going to reissue the one that everyone (apparently) wants? Similar statements can be applied to many other 'core characters' that are repeatedly showing up in this line.

Because it will be hard for a scalper to sell Flint on e-bay for $50.00+ when he is available in the stores for retail.
And bersides I can use another v1 Flint so I can replace the Horriable Duke Arms w/ the Tiger Force Flint arms.
Good looking out Hasbro.

no, it won't. people aren't paying $50 on ebay for a MOC 25th Flint for the figure, they are doing so for a MOC 25th packaged Flint. a non 25th Flint doesn't replace that.

Hasbro is just ensuring their central characters are available during the busiest shopping day of the year. Granted these have all (except Gung Ho...) been readily available in some form all year, single packs are still the core pricepoint for this line. You are far more likely to sell a single card Roadblock and Destro than the second DVD pack (assuming they are even still available come November)
Hasbro hasn't changed anything because that would cost money, money that is really not needed to be spent on an assortment that will hit and be done with in a couple months. The production lines are set up for certain molds and paint aps, Hasbro is just doing a fresh "second printing" on these figures for the holidays.

The other argument against these guys is, this line IS a finite line. There ARE only so many "slots" available. Whether people want to argue that point or not, its still true. If this is a true "bonus" wave, it won't matter for that. But if it is "taking the place" of a wave, then yeah, that sucks.
Part of the reason they brought out the figures multiple times back in RAH was becuase the only secondary source was garage sales and flea markets. Today, we have ebay and various other online sources. ALL of these guys, whether in the original 5-pack, individualized from the 5-pack or as the ORIGINAL WAVE OF SINGLES (yeah, these guys have ALREADY been put out so WTF?), are available (relatively cheaply) online. It is no longer a case of "you missed out? We'll put them out again in a few months".
And the BIGGEST complaint about these guys is what I just said in the previous paragraph is these guys are all from the original 5-packs and we've ALREADY gotten a "singles wave" of them. In fact, there are a few places here abouts that STILL have them on pegs! So do we need a THIRD crack at them?
There were plenty of other guys that could have gotten "second chance' treatment. Snow Job, IG Destro, Snake Eyes v2, Storm Shadow v2, BARONESS (I still don't understand why this one figure hasn't been reissued), Stinger Driver, Flash, Tele-Viper, Python (anyone), Crankcase, Grand Slam, Clutch, Rip-It, "Cobra Driver" (that repaint of the Stinger Driver), hell even DOC.

And there is nothing saying they WON'T be reusing corrected parts where available. Figures like Beachhead, and the wave 2 second run a few months back ALL had corrected crotches and stands. Like with most repack waves, Hasbro almost certainly grabbed an existing figure, slapped them on a new cardback, and took the promo picture. It is just like earlier this year when promo images of new figures still had diaper crotch when the final retail product did not.
Quote
But these are not taking ANY slots at all. They are not even being marketed as a new wave, this is wave 11, revision 1. Hasbro is just doing a small run of their chore characters to ensure the average, non-hardcore, consumer has a chance at the recognizable characters, some of which have NOT been readily available all year.
Quote
Aside from Snake Eyes and Cobra Commander, NONE of the figures have been available in their original from, single carded, since last Christmas for MOST areas. Destro and Roadblock are in the DVD set, but there is NO guarantee that will still be available in some areas come November. And as I said in my original post, the singles are the driver for this line. They will sell a single Destro and a single Roadblock a LOT easier than a $20 DVD set.
Quote
Snow Job, IG Destro, Snake Eyes 2, Storm Shadow 2, and Flash are all reshipping or due to be reshipped in the next couple months. Hasbro is currently pushing the Baroness in her cartoon colors, so it wouldn't be a sound decision to put another version out of an already weak seller. Just about all the others are vehicles drivers THAT ARE STILL SHIPPING. WHY would Hasbro dig into their vehicle sales by releasing the drivers in a single format? They are not stupid (contrary to fan opinion). The only figure with any real merit for reissuing is Crankcase, but Grand slam and Rip It are close enough to figures already on shelves (Flash and HISS Driver) that Hasbro isn't going to push them out.
And I won't even imagine the sh!tstorm that would spin up if Hasbro reissued Doc on a single card less than 6 months after wrapping the mailaway promotion.
Basically, these aren't really for collectors. We already have all these figures. But the brand has grown a LOT in the past year, and there are a lot of consumers who WILL buy these. These are not taking any "slots" in the line, they are simply being repackaged in a small run to ensure little Johnny's mom can find a Duke, Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander and Storm Shadow this Christmas (again, these aren't due to ship until November, which means Christmas will likely clear a lot of them out)

Was/Is this one that sought after? I had been sitting on both this one and a SE/Timber from last year. The reason I ask is because I just OPENED FLINT for his shotgun. I had no idea I could've gotten that kind of turn-over on a figure I was ambiguous about having to begin with, and I just noticed that the TF version comes with the same shotgun (and appears to be a better-looking figure, IMO).
I still have the SE/Timber pack. Should I try to liquidate this one?

Really? At an average of $15 for those two figures? May as well blow the extra fin and get a sweet Lady Jaye figure in the bargain.

And here's where I agree and completely mollify my opinion. My comments and entire reaction come from the standpoint of someone who has been collecting this line since day one and has had at least the chance to get 95% of the product. To me, Duke and Storm Shadow are big groans, but to the 'new blood', they are indeed fresh and exciting. As much as it will annoy me to sift through another run of them while I hunt for the BAT, Snow Serpent, and Bazooka that I still can't find, I have to admit that the sale of these figures will help the line continue.

But the average consumer won't see it that way. VERY FEW consumers see the real value in a majority of the items out there, and this is especially true for toys. You can see it in both GI Joe and Star Wars. Comic packs and multipacks will sell at a FAR slower rate than singles, even when you are seeing the same product in both formats and similar refresh rate. Regular buyers are comparing $7 to $10, which do you think they will pick?
But I'm also looking from the perspective of, the DVD pack will sell to ONE consumer. A case of core characters might sell to several. Even if Mom A only gets Destro, there is still Mom B or C to get the Roadblock. And at $7 a pop, that is almost half the purchase of the DVD pack. The value may be in the comic pack and multipacks, but the MONEY is made on the singles

Not in that green, they didn't. I have about that many in black, too, but I wanted that green one for my de-facto Flint.
Yes, I am THAT particular, even about what color of plastic a weapon is molded in. I'm weird like that.

Actually, Gung-Ho is an assembly problem. When you rotate the shoulder as you described, his shoulder ball sticks out way too far, and the musculature sculpted is off. The shoulders can only be "correct" one way, and Gun-Ho's have been shipping backwards since the 5-pack.
This is *absolutely* a problem Hasbro should've dealt with for a rerelease like this. The new Duke and Flint arms should've also been thrown in here.
This is basically a reship of Wave 4 2007, on new cards. It does not impress.

Kill the line? You obviously haven't been reading this thread. Several people have commented that they will happily pick up some of these figures, because they missed them the first few times. Still others have commented on how these figures will keep those who 'came in late' interested, as these are fan-favorite/nostalgic versions of the characters. With them being out around Xmas, they may even bring in new fans.
From the standpoint of the long-time fans and collectors, this is annoying, repetitive, and unnecessary. I'm with ya there. However, from any other POV, the reissues are a good idea and will help extend the life of the line. We can grumble about not getting what we want, because yeah, from our point of view it sucks... but these aren't for us. They're for the people who will expand the fanbase and provide more revenue. All of this points to the reissues being a good idea and extending the life of the line.

Actually, when no new figures are coming out, I spend my money buying troopers, vipers, ninjas, etc... to build my armies. If they constantly released new figures, I would be buying them and not working on my army building. I like the break periodically...
