Mattel Monkeys Around With Collectors Again

And by the way, I wouldn't bet that this is not being discussed on the Fwoosh. They have a members only paid private section called the Froosh that is quickly becoming one of the largest boards on the site. With a description reading "The first rule of Froosh Club is, you do not talk about Froosh Club.", I wouldn't hold my breath that TNI bashing isn't going on there.

You are a freaking riot. I remember you from over at the Fwoosh. I even remember the thread in the Tech Help section. There was a reason you were banned, which isn't my place to discuss.

I'm glad I could amuse you by telling the truth. Cheers! :)

Now your other major argument seems to be with his comments against ANI. You do realize that both ANI and Julian are never named in the article. I would have never known (or cared) what site he was talking about until you named them in your crusade. And let's face facts; Julian is not the most beloved member of the collector community (despite what he thinks). Many people think he is so far up Mattel's back side it's not even funny(Hal, Antimonitor, early samples...etc etc). Personally I think Julian is okay as he's just doing his thing, but a lot of community does not feel that way. So why bring him into this argument and begin naming names?

The fact is, Jay chose to specifically call out AFi and Julius Marx with that statement. Just because he wasn't named, doesn't mean everyone knew exactly who he was referring to. That was really an unnecessary part of the article.

Don, you and I have been friends for a long time. I would think that you would know by now that it's actually "AFi" and "Julius", but I knew who you meant. As a mod here, you represent the opinions and attitudes of TNI and it's honestly disappointing to see you backing up the insinuations that Julius received anything through dishonest methods. That was surprising to me. Despite you mentioning that you think he is "okay", the overall tone of the above speaks otherwise. To state things like "he is not the most beloved member of the collector community (despite what he thinks)" and "many people think he is so far up Mattel's back side it's not even funny" does nothing more than to add to the negativity surrounding this discussion. If it's not pertinent to the topic, then, as you said above, why bring him into this argument and attack his character?

Ryan, you know your like a brother to me in the collecting community (although we dont get to hang out nearly enough), but sometimes you get so clouded in your opinions that you cant see the clouds behind the trees. You get involved in working with people and then make it your personal mission to defend them whenever someone talks about them (ahem..Eplanettoys). You write a blog over on AFi and deal with Julias (and yes I know both names, I just didnt see the point of saying them over here and besides, you know I like the subtle bits of wit). So your opinion on this is already skewed in their direction.

JayC did not call out Julias or AFi, he merely stated a fact. A web site got a Hal and did not give it away. You my friend are reading way more into that then there is. Only when Grimace decided to post names did people know who was being talked about. You guys brought this up, not us. Why is it the guys over on AFi and Fwoosh seem to think we are starting anything, if anything I would dare to say we over here on TNI dont really care.

I am not defending a biased article, I am saying JayC spoke the truth on most items, and he did amend the article when items where brought to his attention. Do I agree on everything he said, nope, do I take his word as gospel, nope, but I also dont see this as an attack on anyone but Mattel. I have never said Julias obtained anything dishonestly, nor have I backed up any such statement. When did JayC say Julias recieved anything dishonestly, I dont see it? What I said is pertinent to the conversation. I stated facts that are shared throughout the collector community, Julias is not well liked outside of AFi. People dont like his relationship with the toy companies, they grow jealous of his ability to get items that everyone wants (Hal, Antimonitor, etc) because of who he knows. That is not dishonest; it is him using his contacts to get desired items. I stated that this is his business, not mine. I have never attacked Julias, as a matter a fact I barely know him. I think we have spoken online maybe twice in all my years. I neither dislike nor like the guy, I simply dont know him. For you to insinuate that I was attacking his character is both baseless and ignorant. I would hope that by now you would know me well enough to realize I dont attack people.

If you really cared about the reporting you would have first PMed or emailed JayC and told him your concerns. He is very accessible and I'm sure would have been more apt to change his article based on your concerns if this had been done in private first. Only if he refused to acknowledge your issues should your critique have been posted on an open forum. Instead you came in with guns loaded, a very low post count and an obvious agenda and went right in. Of course board members here (with a decent post count) would defend the site. If I went over to ANI, YoJoe, Fwoosh, the .org or any of the larger sites and posted a complaint against one of their news items and attacked their admin I would be blasted far worse. Actually I've seen this happen, try this on the .org and it wouldn't be pretty.

I can't comment on the agendas of other posters and their behavior, but I can tell you that if I complained about the AFi dig, it would not have changed the content. The ownership here has been very negative towards AFi and Julius, for reasons I don't understand, but are obvious when reading the article. Why else would there be assumed and unsubstantiated claims made in what is supposed to be a "news article". It makes it look like Jay and TNI is 'officially' calling out both AFi and Fwoosh for no other reason than to be petty and jealous. That's not a good thing. There is no reason for the AFi and Fwoosh digs in the piece, and as a member of the staff here, I'm surprised you were comfortable with the way the article was written. All it does is get the fans riled up, and this thread is a result of that. The article could have easily been written without those elements.

There you go my friend, assuming again. Nobody here is negative towards AFi or fwoosh, as a matter a fact I bet half the people on this board dont even know about them. You guys are so freaking sensitive its almost laughable. Nobody has called out your boards. Nobody cares about your boards, what they care about are the Gleeks and how that situation has been handled. Why should my opinion on this article come into question? Again you are clearly on the side of the board you are staff on, so your opinions on this article are already biased. Add the fact that you are reading more into this than there is and here we are. What is riling up the various boards are people taking this personally. TNI does not have any agenda towards any other boards. We simply do our thing, its the other boards that are taking this so personally.

I am a member of AFi, but also a member of TNI, Fwoosh, CriticalMess, the .Org, YoJoe, JBL, HISS, JoeCustoms, and many others. I have been a contributing member of the TNI/ADC board for seven years, made many friends here, and have enjoyed some awesome discussions here. This board is a key cog of the online toy community machine.

Im also a member of those boards. And I think each one has its place and each one is important to the community.

So why do we all get wrapped up in all this community in-fighting so easily? There's really no need for it. We are all here for the same reasons. Yes, the Mattel SDCC Gleek issue is terrible, and has created a lot of anger and frustration, but I dislike seeing that anger turned around and spread to the various communities and individuals. There's no need for the TNI vs Fwoosh vs AFI vs whoever garbage. That will go nowhere. No one will "win". Instead, we will be territorial, and miserable, and petty. That takes the fun right out of the hobby.

Don't fuel the fires. Don't respond with emotion. You will be more respected for providing a thoughtful response versus a defensive, angry comment. We all have our loyalties and opinions, and we need to respect that. And most importantly, respect each other.

But youre the one fueling the fire. Youre taking this way to personally and making it an issue. Again I say TNI is not starting a fight with any of the other boards. The article talks about the Gleek situation and how Mattel resolved it. It seems to me that people like you are making this a TNI vs AFi vs Fwoosh issue, not us. Just chill out and step back for a moment. TNI is not nor has it ever been negative towards any other boards. As a matter a fact the people on TNI rarely ever mention other boards (aside from .org, but come on that’s and institution). Its not because people over here are negative, or think their better, its because the members here really just seem to have a live and let live additude when it comes to most other boards. Its that simple, if not for the Gleeks I don’t think Fwoosh would ever have come up in conversation.

Quit taking this so personally!

Okay group hug time, but no touching funny this time.

damn.... all of this because of gleek. a toy that more than half of the complainers would just put towards the back of the shelf, and never touch it again. :( . i guess it's not having the option of ignoring the figure that has people upset, but still...it's just a toy. i couldn't attend the con either, i was just fortunate enough to be one of the first (i think) on JJ's list. if he hadn't of hooked me up, then i would've been in the same boat as everyone else. if i didn't get a gleek, i wouldn't be mad to the point of arguing about it. it truly sucks on mattel's part....it really does, but what's fighting with eachother gonna do?...produce more gleeks? (i think not)

Well I'll stop my complaining. I've gotten it out of my system. I just thought it was handled poorly all the way around and even though I'm not going to say another word about it I just hope Mattel won't do something this monumentally idiotic again--but hey this is Mattel so forget about that happening.

I just hope all those that complain about those of us who were irked by the Gleek debacle will remember this when in October you can't find a Joker or Power Girl or Man Bat.

I agree. Even if l didn't get Gleek (I am very thankful I did since I like movin the fig as much as my other small pvc figures), I too would not get mad to the point of attackin others. I didn't get the Riddler and Eradicator and yet I have not attack others because of it. I only gotten heated in these topics once two posters (whom I won't name) have started calling me names and talking down to me because they were frustrated of the blue monkey bein an exclusive.

Don't do that. We want to speak positive things such as: Power Girl, Joker, and Man Bat will be avaiable for all to purchase at their local Wal-Marts. Those are three I really want in the wave. So I will say they will be avaible for all to purchase at his or her local Wal-Mart. ;)

So had some great luck today at the Mattel shop near my house. I came in and saw that they had a Gleek on a register, so I asked the register girl if they had more in the back, she asked her supervisor cuz the sup was the one who put it there.

The sup came out (really nice) and told me she was working at the con that they had some Gleeks left over and that it was chaotic there, that they first were told to pack them in the WT boxes but then were told to hand them out but some people still didn't know that they were not packing them in the box anymore and people left with out them and were told that they were in the box. I asked her if she had more in the store, she said no, then I explained how I got there as they said they were sold out and if she would sell it to me, then one of the nicest things a stranger has done for me, I think ever, she gave me the Gleek that was on the register, for free, I must of looked like the biggest nerd in the world cuz I had a huge smile and my wife and baby looked at me like I was crazy. So I got real lucky. :):D #US1#

I'm going to try and make this point one more time.

The main issue here is that Mattel in their original announcement for this exclusive stated that you had to go to the SDCC and purchase the Twins set and that your reward for this would be you would also get a Gleek. So this means if Mattel brought 50 Twins to sell at the con should have had brought 50 Gleeks to sell along with them, and when they didn't they should have informed individually each customer that purchased a Twin set that they weren't getting a Gleek so when that customer got home there was no chance of them being surprised that they had no Gleek. It's that simple and there is nothing to defend about not doing that from a company the size of Mattel.

All this other crap about board wars or discreet vague messages Mattel may or may not have posted on their Facebook page to contradict their original message, or tiny signs they put up later on that no one saw is irrelevant and does not change the fact that Mattel led collectors astray on this and did not live up to their obligation or did anything to fix it afterwards. Yes this thread is over 15 pages and their threads all over the net similar to this one, so obviously this IS a big deal to collectors.

This is not just about a small Monkey figure, and its not even necessarily just about Mattel. It's not about Fansites and their egos getting bruised or petty board wars, its about your rights as a consumer and if you don't stand up for your rights, regardless of the product or the company, you send a message that says it is ok to do these things, and as long as you are willing to send that message I think you are going to find companies more and more will be willing to do this type of stuff.

As long as you say things like oh its done nothing we can do, or focus on non-issues like fansite wars, your giving these companies no reason to change. I don't think Mattel is going to really address the Gleeks cause they don't think they have to. My guess is they think the uproar will pass in a short while and people will keep on buying their products. Do you really think they care if you go over to their Facebook page or go on some message board and call them names? No, not as long as you keep buying their stuff. In fact the whole point of that Facebook page to me seems to be a place to go so you can #$#@# and vent your anger so you can be made to feel like someone is listening, meanwhile nothing changes.

Mattel dropped the ball here and at anytime they could have done something to pick that ball back up and fix it and they didn't. It's my job as someone who covers this industry to bring that to light, just like its my job to cover when Mattel debuts a new figure, which I've done, and I would hope that any site that decides to cover this industry in a news capacity whether they label themselves a 'Fan Site' or a 'News Site' would do the same, but I can't control what other sites do only what we do at TNI. Now I've done my job here and covered both sides of the issue as fairly as possible but in the end if you want these companies to really implement change your going to have to do more than just call them names or pick fights on message boards. You are going to have to unite as a whole and say we aren't will to give you our money when you do these things, and if your not willing to do that then don't expect these things to ever really change.

That's what I've been saying all along!! Your money talks, and you know what walks!!! :P Unfortunately I see over at matty that the Wonder Twins sans Gleek has sold out!!! Too bad. A huge statement could have been made had everyone just refused to buy one because the monkey wasn't included!!! Oh well, Mattel wins again, and is shown that they can do whatever they want because the fanboys will just eat it all up!!!

I'm not trying to scare anyone. I'm just being realistic by looking at all the available data. The last Walmart wave was scarce so much so that a set will cost you around 300 dollars these days. The regular assortments that are available to everyone have hit or miss distribution. Wave 10 will start showing up possibly near the holidays and you don't think Batman, Joker, Manbat won't catch the eyes of kids, mothers, fathers, grandparents shopping for gifts. And that's assuming the cases will even make their way to store shelves and not be intercepted by employees who by now are most likely very aware of how one can make a small fortune from the last Walmart wave. Throw in the fact that Mattel has said things before that didn't pan out and we can't even be sure the so called increased orders for this wave will actually materialize.

Jay C and Lady Jaye are on the money. Actually they're regurgitating what I told you but I imagine I'm blocked by most of you by now or you just think I'm crazy.

Mattel won't change. They have no cause to change because YOU won't change. Once the crying over Gleek was done you went back to talking about how much you want Power Girl or Kilowog or whatever fancies you. So really all this pissing and moaning about Gleek means nothing because as soon as the next wave starts popping up the chatter about how awesome the DC Universe Classics line is will begin again. Next year they'll announce another interesting exclusive with an extra piece for attendees only and the "I hate Mattel" chants will begin again followed by the immediate praises of Mattel's next wave of figures. It's just like baseball and steroids. You know they're cheating, you know the owners and the commissioner won't do a damn thing about it. But you're still watching, which means all these so-called problems really aren't.

I personally don't think boycotts ever work, but it's really not about that. Some people deal with the little things like QC and distribution and exclusives, I get that. But if you truly feel you been disrespected and stepped on as a collector then it's time to spend your money on something else.

But I doubt you will. So the next time Mattel screws you over don't act surprised.

i also agree with Jay C and Lady Jaye. i went to the con this year (my first) specifically for gleek, he-ro, etc. needless to say i was disappointed. i refused to buy the twins at the con, and have given up DCU entirely. i am hopeless about MOTU, and i was still able to get he-ro from mattel's site, so i am going to keep buying MOTUC. it hurts to give up DCU, but i am saving my money for more hasbro toys -- since i was able to get everything i wanted from hasbro it makes continuing to collect them a simple choice. granted, hasbro doesn't have the four horsemen, but it's the principle. thanks for listening.

In this instance, I did boycott the Wonder Twins figures. I couldn't see buying a product that royally pi$$ed off so many.

It was hard to stick to my guns on this one, but I did. It would be nice if Mattel would let us know if they are indeed reading this board. Make a comment. Say something for goodness sake.

Yeah, I don't think they pay much attention to us. But kudos to you for holding your ground.

So much for that "No monkey, no sale" bullshit. Maybe next year if they do a Bat-Mite exclusive you can say "No bats, no bucks" and maybe that will work.

Yeah Shanks, more to ya boyo!!! Unfortunately not that many people had your backbone. Hopefully who bought them out were a bunch of speculators and ebayers hoping to cash in, and if that's the case then hopefully they choke on their product or take a loss when they sell em!!!

Lonely, welcome to the boards and sorry you could not get what you wanted!! Also more power to ya for giving up a beloved line on principal!!! I think I may be over DCUC, but I have yet to see the Wal Mart wave or even the Giganta wave. So who knows. But I did return both Killer Moth and Terry McGuiness. Moth would have complted Kalibak, and Terry I've wanted since he was a KB exclusive!!! Let's hope I can stick to my guns!!!
