The Star Trek thread

For the franchise that's no longer popular enough for its own forum :) Discuss all things Star Trek here.

A couple of my own thoughts:

Who else got Into Darkness of Blu-Ray? I've heard this called "the worst" Star Trek movie. I can't agree with that. It had it's flaws, definitely (Out-of-character Kirk at the very beginning, topless Marcus to try to force some sexual tension that lead nowhere anyway). But this movie didn't have the sheer boredom factor of TMP. I made the mistake of starting my fiance out on the old movies with TMP and now I don't know if she'll ever trust me when I say Wrath of Khan is so much better. I also heard ST V was pretty bad. Haven't seen more than the first half hour of that one, but I own it so I'll have to watch it and be my own judge.

I also heard Abrams is done with ST in favor of Star Wars. This is no surprise.....

I finished ST Enterprise for the first time thanks to netflix. I wanted to like it more than I did. The first two seasons were just "meh", season 3 was all about hunting down an alien race for an attack on Earth that we heard nothing about in all of the ST that preceded this show. You could tell producers were getting a bit desperate buy ratcheting up the action, I wasn't that into it. Season 4 was just getting interesting but by then it was too late. I had heard bad things about the last episode and they were all true. Old Riker and old Troi pretending it's 10 years earlier (and it's obviously not). Riker had some kind of problem and he's trying to figure out the answer while playing on the holodeck(?) This would of at least been a good chance to show Captain Riker and Troi on the Titan but I guess they're not going to build all new sets just for the last ST that will air on TV for the foreseeable future. And what a big F-You to the Enterprise cast. Basically telling them, "You can't carry your own last episode so we're bringing in two old favorites". Yeah, not too good. Berman did some good stuff with TNG, but it was time he moved on.

Gonna finish up the last season and a half of Voyager, then I can say I watched ALL ST tv shoes at least once. Then I think it will be time for another DS9 re-watch. What a great Trek that was!

I've been a fan of ST since I was little. I loved seeing all the movies and remember being so excited for TNG when it came out. Saw all the NG movies opening day and loved DS9 and most of Voyager. Never really got into Enterprise, but I think that was more because of the fact that with that show (being a prequel that had never been brought before in any other ST show) tied it's hands a bit. I have also read my fair share of ST books. Liked both of the new movies but think that they have had their hands tied too by the fact that the guys in charge of it don't want any body else to "play in their sandbox" (meaning no books or shows taking place in the new ST Universe, the comic being the only exception).

The thing is that ST has a long history and that helps and hinders the brand. The reinvention is a nice way to try to bring in new fans (like most other things) but without any other sort of media tie ins it's almost pointless. When you have a franchise that only has a new product out every two or three years with nothing else to hold the fan bases interest, that fan base will move on. Sure they might come back and see the new movie when it comes out, but there's not a real dedication to the product.

That being said I think ST is in a good position right now for the future. Paramount just needs to spend the money. A new weekly show with a strong concept and a decent budget would do wonders for the brand. The thing I really want from a new show would be a clear direction for it's future. Too many times we have seen a show that has no idea where it's really going. Sure ST and TNG really didn't have that, but the concept was strong. DS9 seems to have both a strong concept and and idea of where they wanted to take the show (arguably the first year was rough, but after that the show was good). Voyager was a show that was (IMO) didn't have a great concept or real idea of what the shows was doing, other that we have to get home and Paramount wanting another ST show on the air. Then you have Enterprise and since I have never seen the whole series and the handful of episodes I saw weren't very good I just won't comment on it.

roberto orci and alex kurtzman are 2 of the worst enemies of modern film...they must be stopped at all cause.

You might be right, might be wrong. For me these two are a big ol' question mark. Yeah, I did enjoy Star Trek as well. A solid job there. Then you got their name on the Transformers movies...how can you drop the ball that bad? Was it because Bay's stink is all over them? The other week me and a few friends watched Now You See Me, I went into it completely indifferent, when it was over we all agreed it was pretty good. I was watching the credits-and there's their names again. Finally last night I watched the new show Sleepy Hallow. Not as good as I was hoping. Written and created by these two.

Agreed. And I really want them to go back to the original universe. Leave the reboot universe for the movies.

I would love to catch up on the 24th century but I also think it would be really good to hop ahead a hundred years the way they did from TOS to TNG. Move forward!

The Island, Legend of Zorro, Transformers, another Transformers, Cowboys and Aliens, Star Trek into Darkness...sure most made money, but *BARF* I wonder if there's been a study to see if you come out dumber after you see this stuff. These guys should some with a surgeon general's warning or something.

Just watched my Into Darkness Blu Ray. Really not a bad Trek movie at all. I still don't like Kirk breaking the Prime Directive in the very beginning but the following 95% of the movie is good. Pointless undressing Marcus and Old Spock cameo aside.

In toy news: I scored the Playmates classic Star Trek figure set that has all seven of the original crew. I've always wanted this one. No one really appreciates the 90s Playmates stuff but I'd bet a pretty good chunk of money that it's the most diverse and extensive ST figure line we'll ever see.

I have that set, its a nice one. I agree it is prob the most diverse set we will ever see and one of the few Star Trek toylines that was widely successful, but I would say the toyline was successful more for it's timing than anything, it was the golden era of both Star Trek when the franchise was probably at an all time high in popularity and a golden age of toy collecting.

Who even has the license to do ST toys now? Is it Hasbro? Are they just going to sit on it and do nothing?

Someone will take another stab at it eventually but all we're going to see is Kirk and Spock. Maybe...MAYBE whoever does it will manage to eek out the complete seven-man TOS or TNG crew. But if you're waiting on DS9 or Voyager toys, forget it. You're best bet for those will always be Playmates.

My fiance and I watched Trouble with Tribbles followed by the great DS9 Trials and Tribble-ations. She liked them and now has a stuffed tribble in her cubical at work. She came home one day and saw my new tribble display and laughed.

Yes Hasbro has the master toy license and DST can still do collector stuff for everything but the new movies. Yes Hasbro other than some Kre-O is basically just sitting on the license.

Art Asylum/DST did put out all 7 members of TOS and TNG and I think most if not all the DS9 in 7" form as well as many of the ships. They got TOS in both TOS uniforms and Wrath of Khan uniforms which Playmates never did. Kirk and Spock also got figures done in Motion Picture uniforms. They also did all members of TNG in TV uniforms and movie ones. For DS9 they had old TV and the new TV/Movie uniforms and did ones of them in TOS uniforms from the Tibulations episode. They even did 7" figures of the Enterprise crew, though in that line I don't think they ever did the entire crew in just regular Starfleet Uniforms. It was like a mixture of regular uniforms and ones in atmospheric suits. Voyager was the only series that really didn't get much if any love from Art Asylum/DST.

half of the team of "Greatest Threat to Modern Filmmaking," Roberto Orci can't take the heat, and will puff out his chest, his ego, drop F-bombs on fans, and take a small poo on "Raiders of the Lost Ark"...HE MUST BE DEALT WITH.

LOL, am I mistaken or was the guy he was responding to named Shitty or something? I like how it's ok for fans to attack or cuss and spew hatred but the moment someone responds back in kind they are a douche???? Sadly Orci's biggest mistake here was trying to engage people or reading their responses in the first place. STID had its problems there is no doubt but it was still better than many of the other Star Trek movies before it like pretty much all the Next Gen movies other than First Contact, and these guys did pull Star Trek back from oblivion with the reboot in 2009 which I think was one of the better Star Trek movies, yet many fans won't hesitate to call these guys names or what-have you.

Well I agree about the two latest ST movies and I didn't have a real problem with him until I saw these posts. If you're a creator, take a higher road. Sure, disagree with someone, argue your point, defend your work, that's fine. But this guy's acting like he's trying to be every kind of Hollywood ego maniac stereotype you've ever seen. When he tells one guy to give him his pitch for STID to see who's is better, it's like he's telling him to whip it out and compare their.......manhood.

Yes, he should just laugh criticisms like these all the way to the bank. He's already bamboozled a good chunk of the viewing world out of their money, so internet turds shouldn't phase him. But, it would still be wrong for this hack to try and defend his "work" as anything but bankable lowbrow entertainment, or in star treks case, nostalgia theft. I mean, cmon, Raiders of the Lost Ark comparision? Name dropping two big names? This guy thinks a lot of himself.

Michael Bay takes a lot of heat, but after seeing the STID gratuitous underwear shot and reading this fan attack, I have no doubt that this is the guy that wrote "as Devastator climbs the pyramid, you can see his gigantic wrecking "balls"

No, the way he conducts himself personally my be questionable and that underwear scene may have been completely uncalled for, but he's still far from Michael Bay level. Devastator balls was Bay's idea. I saw it in the special features.
