So what are we expecting from sdcc?

So I've been looking around on different sites lately for news on what might be happening at sdcc and so far I've seen very little joe wise with exception to an autograph signing with Ray Parks and someone else. I have to admit I'm getting a bit worried, especially when I see a lot of mentions of new product for Hasbro's other lines but nothing for joe beyond Retaliation. I hate to be one of those "death of the line" people, but things certainly haven't been all that encouraging lately.

Well, if Hasbro has a Q and A session. someone better give them hell about the lack of figures. What's the deal with the night Landing raft? What other mid sized vehicles are we getting? will waves 3 and 4 ever exist at retail. These things have got to be asked. I am very annoyed with Hasbro last year with the fiasco that was the Star Wars VTC line.

What am I expecting? Zilch.

I think no single carded SDCC exclusive was someone's way of saying, "Hey you, don't get your hopes up."

I'll predict little to no wave 3 or 4 sightings at retail, and the Night Landing will be in limbo. I'm not going to say "death of the line", but I will also predict looooooong hiatus. Like, until GI Joe 3. I can see GI Joe becoming a movie-only toy line. With a couple of classic-style figures thrown in to keep the old school fans happy.

I would like to say I predict GI Joe will be ever-present on the toy shelves with hearty stock available for everyone who wants to buy. But when in the last 4 years has that ever been the case? It's too bad, but I think my scenario above is the best we can hope for.

"Death of the Line"

I don't think that's ever going to be a reality for these 80s lines. GI Joe, Transformers, He-Man, etc. Not because they're so beloved, but for the simple fact that Hasbro and Mattel already have the rights to all these characters and code names. They'll never stop using them completely. Why would they? Half the work is already done. Who wants to put effort into a **GASP** new idea, when you're sitting on a mountain of trademarks already? Snake Eyes, Skeletor, Ironhide, Panthro, and countless other will see different incarnations for a long time to come.

GI Joe may go away for a while but that doesn't mean Hasbro has flushed to trademarks to hundreds of characters down the toilet. Joe has gone away before and come back. He will again. But probably not next year.

I hope to hear them say that they have fired all of the heads of their departments and every person who works in distribution.

I mean seriously, as if the entire 2012 fiasco wasn't bad enough (the movie delayed, recall of product for a year, etc), they have done nothing to improve things this year. Wave 2 was shipped in such a small quantity, it's unbelievable. I can't understand how we weren't swamped with wave 2 stuff, even wave 3 and 4. They had this stuff sitting around for a year waiting for the movie to drop, and then they barely ship out anything?

but if you collect other Hasbro lines, then you know that ALL of their action figure lines have been completely screwed up the last year and a half. Nothing is shipping

They'll show wave 3 at their booth, formally announce that wave 4 is an "e-tailer exclusive" and there will be no sign of the Night Landing, leading fans to speculate/complain about it for years until Hasbro finally releases it with Joe 3 product or something (if it doesn't end up at closeout retailers).

No new product will be unveiled.

GI Joe will likely become "movie only" as far as mass-retail goes, but Hasbro will probably crank out some "classic" style exclusives in the interim (multipacks on Amazon or e-tailers in general), however we won't see hide nor hair of such things until Toy Fair of next year, if not Joe Con. Still, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Hasbro put out some multipacks of several of the "concept case figures" next year. Assuming they can find vendors willing to sell them.

ugh... Hasbro is killing me this year. I just want everyone who runs anything there to be fired. They are making such terrible decisions across the board. I never expected them to sink all of their toylines at the same time

Why do so many collectors assume that Hasbro is an all-powerful entity that can just MAKE retailers (and end-consumers) buy their stuff?

There is no magic button to make toy lines successful. Hasbro can't force retailers or consumers to buy their stuff, and they certainly can't turn around a lousy economy that has made toys something that's easily cut from the household budget. Nor can they stop China's factory workers from demanding better pay and benefits, or stop the rising price of oil in order to keep the costs of their product low.

Hasbro's far from perfect, but people need to stop assuming that the implosion of the action figure market that we've been seeing over the last couple years is solely Hasbro's doing. There's a whole heck of a lot more to the situation than just "Hasbro should've just fixed it all!"

I would like confirmation that either they have more stuff coming out (even if it's not until next year) or that the line is going away until the next movie (if then).

I know right.....At least then I can call it a day and maybe concentrate on other things like paying rent.......

I do blame Hasbro's problems squarely on Hasbro. Stores are willing to order their products and people are willing to buy it. When new products appear online, they sell out pretty fast. Stores across the country have empty pegs or a handful of old figures. The only figures you see pegwarming are GARBAGE figures that Hasbro tries to shell out to ride the popularity of movies.

- Marvel Legends relaunch went great. Until Hasbro stopped producing the stuff and their silly variant schemes to make more figures that never make it to retail. Dwight Stall even admitted that they haven't even been done yet and they will change the way they ship figures in the future. You can't find The last couple of waves of Marvel Legends anywhere.. not in stores, and usually not online at regular retail avenues. You can only find Ironman, Klaw, and Constrictor. If you go to TRU you can find Drax and Bucky Cap because for some reason they received cases of almost all Bucky Cap.

- Marvel Universe was a very successful toyline until Hasbro decided to cut costs and fire the head of the MU line. After that the line didn't ship for about 8 months. It went on hiatus basically, losing alot of steam. When it came back, they made plenty of big mistakes .... Most notably repacking the same figures over and over (figures that were already pegwarming) instead of ones that people actually want. Last year at SDCC people asked Dwight Stall why they hadn't reiussed Vision, he didn't have much of an answer, insisting that he didn't even know that Vision was in demand (going for about 200 bucks on ebay). This year the pegs have been mostly bare, except for when Hasbro ships out a revision case (instead of new figures). This year for their comic packs, they canceled ones that people wanted like Antman/Moonknight and instead released 8 packs of entirely repainted figures (not NEW characters using existing parts, just repainted figures that weren't interesting at all).. like Captain America with a bunch of black blobs on him to represent comic-shading or Dr.Strange with blue legs instead of black with the same exact Silver Surfer. We have seen them create new figures using old parts for new characters, and that is fine.. but it's not cool to just do slight repaints of the same characters over and over.

- with Gijoe they had success with the Pursuit of Cobra after the first movie, then with the 30th anniversary line. Then they canceled that in favor of the new movie stuff, which is expected. But then they had to recall/hold all of their movie figures after the movie was delayed. 16 months later, they have still only released the same stuff that they pulled from retailers last year.. some wave 1 stuff and a trickle of wave 2. You would think that after a year delay, they would have things ready to go. But they didn't. Shelves are empty, Hasbro hasn't suppplied any product, even with the support of a movie and fans ready to buy after waiting so long. And of course we saw all of the awesome stuff in the concept cases that they had designed but chose not to produce.

those are the only things I collect.. but I have seen the same problem with StarWars when they didn't ship any of those Vintage figures for about 6 months or so.

but I see other toys from other companies being shipped without problem.

I blame Hasbro's problems on Hasbro's terrible decisions.

I semi agree with both of you. I try to look at it from a non-collector-biased view. Collectors always see things from their point of view, and it's hard not to. Sometimes you have to take a step back from your little world and try to look at it from a bigger picture. Not just your store, not just your area, but the whole county/world as a whole, how are all those stores doing as a whole, how are all those lines doing as a whole, how are all those kids or parents or grandparents buying as a whole... those numbers we cannot see, we don not know, but Hasbro and the stores that sell their product do know those numbers... so if they're not ordering something, or they're not making something.. Im pretty sure there is a reason for it. It's not because they just don't care... Yeah, firing some of their people really hurt them and I bet money that is one of the reasons that some of the lines suffered.. but I really think that it has more to do with those other, behind the scenes things I mentioned above and some of the stuff Jmacq mentioned than the firing of a few employees.

I do also understand the collectors mind set, as I still am one, and I do get frustrated going into a store and only seeing Clone Wars Aqua Droids and Mace Windus.. and Retaliation wave one Roadblocks and still seeing a ton of that MU Mohawk dude... but again, I try to keep in mind that these companies are out there to make money, that is their #1 reason for existing.. so for some reason, there is something out there that is causing them not to be making money.. and it's not something I can just assume I know all the answers of and start throwing out the blame from the comfort of my computer chair.

I don't know.. that's just mee.. oh.. and Transformers are a boomin' and never seem to have all these problems the other Hasbro lines do... just sayin' ;)

Marvel even admitted that Hasbro is screwing up.

Like last year at the NYCC, Marvel was supposed to be offering the Old Man Logan MU figure at the con for folks who ordered a digital subscription. They did this for the previous few years with Nick Fury, X-Force Archangel, and unmasked Dr.Doom.

However, Hasbro FAILED to deliver the figures. They didn't get them done in time. So now Marvel is behind on their subscription figures because Hasbro screwed them over. They are offering the Old Man Logan at SDCC for 20 bucks and trying to get rid of them all so that they can offer the new subscription figure at NYCC '13 in October.

(and when you say that all you see is the "mohawk guy" in the MU line at all of your stores, that is a nation-wide problem that everyone is seeing too. and you have to ask, who decided to release this figure so many times instead of someone like Vision?

True on the Mohawk guy, but he's like the Yarna or Ice-cream maker guy in Star Wars... Fans and collectors are like... "WE NEED IT FOR OUR COLLECTION, FANS AND COLLECTORS WILL BUY THEM".. and then they're put in a wave and everyone passes them up and they warm the pegs because kids don't want a fat 6 boobied dancer or a purple Mohawk guy... yeah, those things I blame partly on Hasbro because they should make figures like that chase figures, or limited to store exclusives or convention or club exclusives.. but then you have fans crying and throwing fits that they can't get them... so whacha gonna do? You can't please everyone all the time.. so you gotta find a middle ground that works.

Yeah, but look at how Hasbro released those figures. That wave with Gladiator(the mohawk guy)...Cyclops and Cable are one per case, and Gladiator is 2 per case. Cable, who was hugely popular in the 90s boom and is still popular today, and Cyclops, who is probably the second-most recognizable X-Man, are shortpacked instead of Gladiator. Why?

You mentioned Ice Cream Maker guy, and I don't know how things went around the country, but I never saw him warming pegs because Hasbro was smart and didn't flood the market with Ice Cream Maker Guys like they did with Yarna or some of the Episode one figures last year.

And Legends...they are reshipping Punisher(repainted) and Ultimate Captain America from waves 3 and 4...yet they are unable to release any of those variant characters from the same waves? Even though Blade was the variant of that Punisher and presumably had the same UPC? Why is that? I'm looking at these new figure variant doubles they're showing off...Moonstone/Songbird, Batroc/Blizzard, and Radioactive Man/Tigershark, and instead of excitement at getting six great, classic villain characters, I'm wondering which half will we probably never see? I'm not optimistic that we'll get the last Wrecking Crew member either, which would be a huge bummer.

Joes...why are they waiting until months after Retaliation is released, when retailers are moving on to Wolverine and Man of Steel, to release the best figures based on Retaliation? Why are they repacking figures that have been warming pegs for months instead of making Night Viper 2 per case?

The Dollar General figures, supposedly, have been selling well and these retailers actually want more figures...but Hasbro isn't making any?

I know Hasbro isn't completely responsible for all of the frustrations of the past few years...but they share some of the blame.

How soon people forget that the "Jabba's fat dancer" figure (Yarna) was a figure that had been demanded by collectors for years. In fact she had won several polls for a "most wanted figure."

Likewise, Gladiator (Purple mohawk guy) was a figure that often popped up on collectors' lists (though more often wanted in Marvel Legends than Marvel Universe).

While both figures were clearly overproduced, they're an excellent illustration of the collector market's bark being bigger than its' bite, a fact which many collectors adamantly refuse to see. They have the tendency to make the blanket assumption of "If they just did everything exactly the way I personally think it should be done, the line would TOTALLY be a huge hit!" Nevermind that most of these people know nothing about running a major toy business, how to interact with retailers (and how much influence those retailers have over what makes it to shelves), How to keep costs down so you still make a profit, etc....

Why do people assume the stores are actually ordering new stuff and simply not getting it?

It's seemed quite obvious the last two years or so that stores order virtually nothing unless it's a movie tie in or the holiday season starts rolling around. This isn't just Hasbro...it's basically almost every toy line on shelves. So either they're ALL incompetent (and not just Hasbro), or there's more going on here than we are privy to.

no no, you aren't getting it. the mohawk guy's name is Gladiator, and he was definitely a welcome edition to the line. Fans have been begging for him to be put into the Marvel Legends line for years. I have to say he is a great figure. The problem is that Hasbro is terrible at knowing who to put into their case assortments. Gladiator is from a couple years ago (wave 13 to be exact, and they are now up to wave 22ish, including about 8 months last year where they didn't ship anything).. so he is pretty old. Gladiator sold very well the first time he was released, as most MU figures do. But then Hasbro decides to release revision cases containing all old figures that are not in demand, and they also pack old figures into the waves of new figures. New cases seem to always contain 3-4 old figures. Hasbro doesn't have any clue about who to pack into these cases. Certainly, there are old figures that are in high demand and would be welcomed by fans (like I said, Vision has only been released once and goes for 200+ on ebay. Fans directly told Dwight Stall last year that they wanted him at the Hasbro Q&A session, he replied that he had no idea. However, of course Vision has still not been reissued)... anyhow, back to Gladiator. Gladiator has been reiussed 3 or 4 times.. so of course he is going to peg warm because everybody already has him.

that's what I am talking about... Hasbro shooting themselves in the foot.

All I hear about is people going into stores and only seeing 3-4 figures on the pegs, including guys like Gladiator. But Hasbro keeps making the same mistake and then blames distribution.. the pegs are mostly empty, the only thing available is old crap.

who is to blame? Hasbro

I get it... that's why I said "yeah, those things I blame partly on Hasbro" I completely understand they screw things up many times with distribution and waves and figure count of certain figures per case(that's why I even said, some figures should be made exclusives, or limited in case counts or what not)... that's why I said they are partly to blame. But like Jmacq and I have said, we don't know all the behind the scenes stuff. We don't know how all that decision making is done, is it one guy, is it a whole team of suits in an office, is it a computer program, is it soley Hasbro, do retailers have a say in what they get, etc, etc, etc... Iike I said, it's easy to just point the finger and say.. IT'S YOUR FAULT HASBRO.. FIX IT, without knowing all the behind the scenes...

I'm not saying they're perfect.. and these last couple of years have been horrible for collectors, especially with hasbro lines...again, I get that.

I got to look at a sneak peek of how things are done for a major snack food brand a couple weeks ago. They are switching over their whole sales and marketing system to iPad based app systems and they can pull up stores in areas and find out exactly how well certain stores are doing up to the minute... and not only that, but also certain brand lines and flavors and individual items, down to how many units are sold a day and adjust product placement, ordering, and all that stuff with a click of a button(touch screen button).

While I know it's a lot different because it's food related, but it would be so cool if some toy companies went this way. I always wondered why some toy companies didn't do that and have their own sales and merchandising employees go in and bring in and stock their product like the food companies do. I know there isn't as fast a turn around and it takes about a year for some figures to go from concept to being made to being in stores(which some people tend to forget, they don't just feed cows action figure grass and have them poop out figures overnight)... but it would still be cool to see a smaller toyline do that. I'm sure that's how it used to be in the early days when things were made in America and all that, who knows( I know they have reps in stores here and there, but that's not what I'm talking about, I've actually applied and interviewed for one of those positions and it's not what you think, those are, check a line, check for new signs so-and-so store was supposed to put up, make sure we have such-and-such space for said movie line, put up stock if it's there and pegs are empty, but nothing like what I'm talking about)... anyway, I just thought that was a cool little thing I saw, and I'm hoping at least, the toy companies are doing some of those kind of things with the technology that is out there, in my opinion, it can only help.

I know three things:

1. There will ALWAYS be peg warmers so it's useless to try to over analyze why 6-boob-chick or Gladiator or whoever didn't sell. For whatever reason, they don't. This has happened periodically for decades. In 1987, Crystal Ball was a huge peg warmer to the point where even my 7 year old brain wondered, "Wow, how come there's so many of that guy." Lo and behold, the vintage GI Joe line continued for 7 more years, regardless!

2. We may never know for sure who to blame for crap distribution. The toy company or the retailer. Each one blames the other anyway, right?

3. I walked down--what I can only guess was--the target action figure aisle last night and it was one of the sorriest sights I've seen in a long time. Maybe when they do a reset we'll all be pleasantly surprised with 8 pegs dedicated to GI Joe wave 3 and 4, six pegs for Marvel Legends (the Archangel and Jean Grey waves), and a whole lot of 6" Star Wars.
