Episode VII: 'The Force Awakens' Discussion Thread

Serkis is great. Gollum, Cesar, and many other parts that I know I'm forgetting at the moment. The guy is like a modern day Karloff with all his creature rolls, and he does such great work in all of them. I like Cumberbatch well enough but that was the obvious guess...I'm glad it turned out to be someone else.

Kevin Smith's reaction to the teaser can now be found online...I refuse to watch it.

Two days ago the talk was about that new lightsaber and the completely pointless debate over whether it would actually work in real life. Now it seems to have shifted to bemoaning a black Stormtrooper. Because America never gets tired of dragging race into any topic.

For anyone out there with a sense of humor, Mr. Plinkett weighs in on the new trailer:

You know when he said that was Wedge piloting the X-wing I just assumed he was being flippant, but then I thought what it if IS Wedge? But I know it was reported that the actor said he was "bored" with SW and why would they purposefully mislead us about anything concerning A New Dawn?

But I don't know. It's two guys in helmets sitting in fighter cockpits 30+ years apart. I've never been good at telling the difference.

Well, if we're gonna nit-pick here, I'd like to point out the fact that those little "mini-hilts" Colbert is referring to ignite after the main blade does, implying they are indeed separate beams, which means they are actually separate units that could be damaged or cut off in battle...unless the hilts are made of the same metal those staffs that General Grievous' body guards used were.

Well whoever was responsible for this diagram, it made its way to the Colbert Report and he defends the design just about as well as anyone possibly could. It's a pretty good bit.

It doesn't matter which nerd talks it up prettier...the criticism is spawned from this: its sad to live in a world that has become so bored with something as simple as a laser coming out of a flashlight

Hey, it's nerd debate. What are ya gonna do?

To further this...I think it's one beam and inside the handle are little mirrors that shoot it off into 3 different directions.

That is as far as I am going to analyze this fantasy weapon. I promise.

If Darth Maul's double saber was just 2 lightsabers welded together, and Obi wan struck a clean blow to the center, not damaging the crystal/focusing crystal, shouldnt the other half have stayed ignited?

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Darth_Maul's_lightsaber

Why would the crystal be that close to the base unless the double-bladed saber was powered only by one and a refractor?

Ha, ha. I am sure I have no idea. There's a 90-100 year difference between the two weapons, correct? It's possible that they use a different method of construction that I know nothing about.

Looking at your link made me realize one thing, though. One day there will be a comic book depicting Darth _____________ constructing his baffling blade of red light and then all of our questions will be answered.

The point is, we shouldn't have to or even want to ask these questions. We easily bought into the fantasy of the original lightsaber...if it ain't broke, dont fix it.

I think the thing about it that's more interesting to me than the configuration of the beams is the beams themselves...they seem to have a more intense, unstable energy about them, as if they might not be as refined as the light saber beams of old. Perhaps if this is a wannabe Sith character trying to revive the order, if the rumors are to be believed, then maybe this is a crude homemade lightsaber...there might not have been anyone else left alive all those years that knew the secrets of the Sith or how to properly construct a lightsaber, other than Luke, of course.

Soooo......the rumors I'm hearing is Han and Leia are no longer together. Also sounds like the Empire might still be in charge. The characters shown in the trailer are suppose to come together to hire Han to take them to Leia who's in charge of the Rebels.

  • 2 weeks later...

Only a few more months of hearing the word "leaks" in every sentence having to do with Episode 7.

Yeah, then the Mouse gets to "leak" officially, non-stop into our ears and eyes.

They're going to open the flood gates. That's for sure. But no other company would handle it any differently or more benevolently. You don't spend billions buying the most popular geek franchise ever and not try to make a profit off of it. You're going to get the sequels, the spin-offs, the merchandise no matter who buys it.

It's either that or George keeps it and sits on it to do God knows what.

I just get really tired of hearing the word "leaks". To me that implies that this is information that Disney doesn't want us to have and it was somehow stolen and they are beside themselves with worry that we're seeing something they don't want us to see. To me the more likely case is that something is "leaked" because they want it out there for the attention and they want us to think it's something secret that shouldn't be seen. Kind of like a Kardashian sex tape....

We've seen very little to nothing of Star Wars 7 that wan't meant to be seen.

Well, I personally don't want to see or find out too much about it before the final product arrives in theaters. It does indeed "spoil" the surprise of seeing things the very first time for me.
