. . . and the best 'Net-Rumor they could come up with is Star Wars: The Next Generation?

Have to disagree there. Between the originals and the prequils, I don't see much consistency at all in terms of looks. The originals looked real, authentic. The prequils-thanks to the crutch of CGI in every single scene-- looked polished, sterile, and artificial.
I think Abrams will do fine. If anything, I would imagine that if it were up to him, you'd see very little reference to the prequils. A plus in my book.

Before the Disney buy I was actually betting on this happening. With the complete lack of original ideas in Hollywood, I don't think this idea will ever be completely off the table.

No no...I meant in terms of cinematography; the lighting, camera angles, that sort of thing. Like many have mentioned before, J.J. Abrams is fond of lens flares and hyper-action. I'm not so sure I wanna see that in a Star Wars movie. Just like if James Cameron were to direct, there might be alot of bright-blue lighting in the background...and lots of water. (lol) Ridley Scott's movies have a certain look too, as do many other directors.
I guess what I'm saying is there weren't any earmarks of any given director's so-called "look" on any of the Star Wars films that one could point out or recognize. That's what I'm afraid of, that any new Star Wars films will be stylized.

Well at least it isn't a remake of the origional in the rumors I had heard about before Lucas sold it to Disney
I was thinking that after he died whomever took over for him would have "A New Hope" remade

And GMP, like you I was concerned about the opening credits being different. Like I've mentioned before, I'm a very sentimental person that likes attention paid to consistency, but now I'm in a "whatever" kind of mode. Like yojoe alluded to, if they do a good job, it will be every fanboy's dream come true. It's so much fun looking forward to this, not really knowing where they're gonna take it and what it's gonna look like. It's terribly exciting.

LOL, that's because we don't know anything about this movie yet. Period.
Actually, I take that back, we know a couple of things. We know the people behind the prequils (George and all his Yes-Men) are out. We know the franchise is owned by a company that by and large produces quality product. We know the big 3 actors and a writer from ESB (arguably the best SW) are all on board. We know a successful director is doing it (I obviously don't expect everyone to agree, by I personally gave the Star Trek reboot an "A").
Hey, I have my pessimistic side too. Personally, I don't NEED to see another Star Wars. I'd be happy with the memory or the original three. I think Luke, Han, and Leia's story has been told and it will take a damn fine story to convince me otherwise, I hope I get proven wrong. But more movies are coming whether I like it or not and all of the above just look like good first steps to me. They're not predestined to suck.

I would hope if they're calling it ep7 then it will continue with some familiar characters (even if played by different actors). If it was going to be entirely new with no relation to previous movie, then they should call it Star Wars: "new title" insert not Ep 7.
i guess we should all wait a year till good info starts coming out.

you cant argue with initial success and all the breakthroughs(artistic, technological, problematic) made to get it to the screen. And structuraly, A New Hope is a solid stand-alone film without having to remind us of its place in a larger, multifilm story arch. (Remember those days? when Hollywood didnt automatically sell things as a trilogies? A sarcastic 'thank you' to the Star Wars business model.)
Im only saying this in trying to dissect the film critic from the fan in me. I mean, Temple of Doom is my favorite Indy film, but I wont and cant argue that its a better film than Raiders.
