Talk about Iron Man 3 here

I can't believe no one has started this yet!

I went Friday night with my GF and we both really liked it. Afterwards and well into the night we were rattling off different parts and one liners that we thought were funny or just plain cool. Easily better than Iron Man 2 and probably the best 3rd superhero movie ever. A couple of quick thoughts:

Tony Stark-did not wear out his welcome because they did not overdo his quirkiness (like I thought they did in 2 a lot). Really, he wasn't armored up all that much but you didn't care because he's such a strong character. Good job there.

Mark 42-I'm gonna call this the "fail" suit. Not because I don't like it or anything, it just got banged up so much; by the oncoming semi truck, at the end where with was going to latch on to Toni but crapped out. There were some funny moments with that suit that I like a lot.

The kid in act 2-people groan when superheroes get kid helpers but this kid worked. He kept up with Tony, there was a nice chemistry, and he served a purpose for the story. Really there was nothing in the movie that seemed shoehorned in, or forced, which is good. This kid, Pepper, Rhody, Happy, they all fit in well.

The Mandarin-HERE is where we're going to hear the fanboys crying over cannon while sobbing into their cereal bowls. If you had childhood dreams about Mandarin having a long, robust movie presence that are now crushed by this movie, I'll just say "sorry". Personally, I really loved Kingsley's Mandarin when we thought he was the real deal. Finding out he was a fake was still entertaining and again, served the purpose for the story. I know some will disagree with me on this point. Some will even find a way to use this to crucify the whole movie. So be it, I guess...

AIM bad guy (sorry forgot his name)-A lot better than annoying Justin Hammer from IM2. A good bad guy with a good evil plan. That's all you need.

All the suits at the end-coming soon to a toy store near you!

3 1/2 stars! A perfect sequel.

Hated the Mandarin twist...I mean, I guess it was a surprise in a movie genre that is pretty much devoid of them these days, but not a welcome one. Remember the outcry fans had over making Joker shoot Batman's parents in 89 for story simplicity? Funny, is it that they can get away with this because about 80% of the audience doesn't know who Mandarin, Iron Man's chief nemesis, is anyway? Funny, and kinda sad. Nice oriental dragon tats, douchebag. Coupled with saying "I am the Mandarin" does not make you the Mandarin.

kid sidekicks, the stupid Stark-loving news van guy, and giving extra business/one-liners to every background henchmen: That's why they didn't over-do Stark's quirkiness, because they were too bust spreading it around to every single annoyance in the movie

enjoy those extra iron man armors for the 2 minutes theyre onscreen...you saw it all in the trailer.

the after credits scene:

the real joke behind having Bruce Banner play therapist to Tony is that it seemed to take the audience a delayed 20 seconds to realize/remember that this guy is supposed to be Bruce Banner...might have helped to have a successful Hulk movie starring this guy? Oh, right...we gave up on the character in that sense. We only need him in the Avengers cuz he's one that Mom might recognize off the bat. Also, Mark Ruffalo isn't aging well, so that doesn't help either.

The boy and I just got back from the AM showing, and we both enjoyed it. I did enjoy the twist on the Mandarin. Granted it isn't the classic Mandarin, but in this day and age, it is nearly impossible to be surprised when you go to the movies unless you go into media blackout mode.

I actually do not. No internet back then.

The move they pulled with the Joker was not something I would have done. Yet I've still enjoyed watching that Batman movie over again for years. I'm probably going to be able to say the same for IM3.

I still have only guesses about who the Star Trek 2 villan is and I plan to keep it that way @trek@

Back in my time, they had these things called newspapers and magazines, Twiki...

Even if we wanna call it a twist on the Mandarin, I feel we already got enough of real world terrorism plot parallels/shenanigans with the much more thoughtful Nolan Batman movies...jeez, what am I saying?! Positives to the Nolan Batman!?

I loved the way they portrayed Mandarin originally before the twist, and somehow I loved it even more afterwards. It was completely unexpected. Otherwise, this movie is definitely better than the 2nd, but I still like the 1st over it.

I've already heard a lot of whining about the film, and here's my response:

The thing us comic readers seem to forget is: IM3 wasn't made for us. It was made for the entire population to enjoy. Once the first Iron Man film came out, the character became known and loved by everyone. It's EVERYBODY'S Iron Man now. It isn't JUST for us comic readers anymore. Maybe Shane Black could have made a film that stayed true to the comics, but just comic fans wouldn't have brought in $175 million over the weekend.

I for one was slightly disappointed over the plot twist in IM3, but the more I think about it, the better I am with it. I'm glad it strays from the comic, because I've already read those. I already know how those stories end. I already know those characters. The films are a completely different universe. I'm glad the stories are different. I'm glad that I'm surprised and shocked by by the characters and the plots. I watched the entire Harry Potter series before reading the books, because I wanted to go into the movies with no preconceived expectations. IM3 wasn't what you expected? Does that mean it was bad? Not necessarily. If anything, it means the writers and directors had the balls to try something different instead of taking the easy way out and shoehorning another writer's story into the script.

Personally, I thought IM3 was great. It had real character development which the second one lacked. It also felt like a standalone film where as IM2 felt like it was there just to lead into The Avengers.

Also, I'm not convinced that we got the truth about Kingsley's Mandarin. Looking back, there were things said in the film that makes me think the actor bit was the act. Some things don't add up. I think Marvel left it ambiguous enough that if they want to use Kingsley again as Mandarin, they can. If not, then he truly was just an actor and they'll leave it as that. I'd LOVE him be really be the Mandarin as it means he fooled Stark and everyone else. I like the idea that Mandarin gets the victory and Killian takes all the blame. Stark thinks he won when the real villain gets away with it.

Movie was so stupid. Mandarin was such a let down. No wonder no one did a figure of him, lol. Who needs one af a guy who plays an actor. The whole movie makes no sense. Stark calls out to the biggest terorist in the world. I thought that after everything he went trough he would be more clever and protect the ones he loves first specially since he came from the hospital where his friend/bodyguard was. Then he got attacked. Oh my he could have called these 30 armors at that moment and hunt them all down. The bad guys need the iron patriot armor to get close to the president?? Sorry but with lavamans power he wouldnt had a problem coming near him. Specially since one of his henchman was on board of the plane at the end anyway. Tony stark builds some mcguyver gadgets and hunts down the biggest terrorist in the world?? Mkey. Why did he remove these pieces from his heart at the end? He could have done that in the first movie and save himself a lot of trouble. As for all the armors at the end. It would have been better to show what every armor can do instead of just shooting something from the hands. why no return for the actual war machine??? Come on. I was so waiting for that and nothing. We have such an awesome and serious actor for war machine and all he does is funny jokes and doesnt stay focused in a mission?? What kind of an army man is that?? Yeah well I didnt liked it at all and will be ranked right next to ghost rider 2 and elektra and fantastic four 2.

Very well put.

I was actually thinking the same thing about Mandarin....perhaps the actor was the act. Look at the part when he was explaining everything to Tony and he switched back to Mandarin accent mid-sentence. I half expected something really bad to happen to Tony right there, with Mandarin saying, "HA Gottcha!", but again, I didn't know for sure. I was surprised. Maybe Mandarin planted himself exactly where he wants to be right now to carry out something bigger. OR maybe he's just an actor. Could be either, really.

You know I saw a dude at Free Comic Book Day in a dead-on accurate movie Mandarin costume. Everything was perfect; hair, beard, glasses, outfit. Considering the movie opened the day before, he must have worked hard!

Guess i was talking to fast. Toyark reports about a marvel legends mandarin. Looks even good. Funny though that we get one of the lamest movie villain ever, lol

I saw the pics and I'm down for one. The thing looks just like Kingsley. And much like I can imagine all my Episode I Jedi figures have personalities, I can imagine this figure being the real Mandarin....or not.

Ughhh, I left the theater afterwards having not liked the movie onward as soon as the big reveal happened!!! I was like, are you f'ing kidding me?? His main nemesis is reduced to a joke!!

And all those promos in the movie were so awesome!!

And while I liked the scene, it was funny!! I would have loved to see a better tie in to Avengers 2!!

This movie was complete trash, if Avengers 2 is going to be anything like that, please marvel stop making movies! One should not ask so many questions after seeing a movie. Why did the mark 42 armor seem to break apart into 52 pieces almost in every scene? Then to top it off was always out of power? Tony challenges the most wanted criminal in the world, and his armor that has not even been tested yet? Really? When they come and attack the house in helicopters this is when Tony finds out that the weapons system does not work? The iron patriots software now apparently runs on AIM software, so why could AIM not open the armor? Why did the main bad guy have to heat up his abdomen like he was about to cook a barbecue? I'm not even going to get into the Mandarin story that was just a colossal cluster #$##! And the Final when there was 50 armors flying around it was almost like Michael Bay directed this movie! Right when I was looking at my watch saying, how long is this movie? The 50 Armors started flying around and I said to myself the only way this can get any worse is if Tony starts jumping from Armor to armor. People say that it's just a movie, however Marvel needs to respect the fact that people that watch this movies are smart educated people from all over the world and do not just like seeing explosions, after all this is not Transformers! Sorry for the poor spelling, I'm using Siri to dictate my response. Oh and my last question, why did Jarvis fly tony to tenessee, knowing that he would run out of power, shouldn't a AI like Jarvis have the brain power that the writers of this movie lacked and fly tony to one of his many residents around the world, like the New York skyscraper from avengers and pick up a new armor? One that wouldn't run out of power multiple times throughout the movie.

You know, I kind of expected it to be not as good as the first one!! The second one wasn't!! Maybe RDJ is only as good as his fellow Avengers!! He meshed so well with the rest.

I'm hoping and expecting Thor to be better!! Same with Cap!! Guardians, just not sure??

I felt the same way...but remember, thoughts(or whining) like these are wrong because this movie was not made for "us," right, Joe? Mongoose?

Shane Black is a tool. Sure he's a famous director, but he's still a moron!!!

The movie did not make all that money because the Mandarin was revealed to be a fake, it would have made the same amount if the vignettes were real, and he was the villain!! In the commercials he was an impressive villain, capable of so much more!! It disgusts me!!

And please, the argument about the rings is such horse****!! They just fought an alien armada in Avengers, fought Gods and magic in Thor! About to do that again in Thor, going back in space with a talking raccoon and tree, what the hell do you mean they couldn't do magical rings????

Someone mentioned they were cheesy on the cartoons, no s*** they were cheesy, it's a cartoon!! We've had cheesy Batman, Superman, Spider Man, Captain America cartoons, etc, etc, etc!! Yet they still were able to do great movies with these same characters!! They could have changed what each ring did, to make it more plausible!! Hell they could have made the rings from space, tie into the upcoming space battle we're going to see!!!

Shane Black copped out on what was a memorable portrayal of the Mandarin!! Sure he wasn't Chinese, but I got past that because from the commercials it seemed as if Ben Kingsley was going to knock it out of the park. And he was, till the "real" Mandarin showed up. Utter garbage!!

But then the hater amo would be that IM3 was just a commercial for Avengers 2. Just like IM2 was supposedly a "commercial" for Avengers...I guess because Scarlett Johansen was in both? Maybe? Actually, I guess I don't really know why people thought of IM2 that way.

Spoooooooooonnnnn!

IM3 saw it yesterday in a near private showing aka matinee. It was ok, I didnt care for the zombie aim people or the mandarin reveal.

If the reason i cant have comic movies be like the comics, is bc they are too unrealistic for a mass audience, then why is the head aim guy breathing fire???!!! I want my 10 magical rings dammit!

  • 1 month later...

I FINALLY saw this movie yesterday. It wasnt bad...not as bad as most people claimed it to be. I had a few laughs, i had a huge fanboygasim when all the suits came to play. and Pepper...WHOA! It will be interesting to see how they move forward with Avengers 2 from this point.

My ONLY 2 gripes was with Mandarian (another story for another day). And here is the main gripe. We just had a SUPERPOWER Team up movie...Tony got his house blown to the depths of the Pacific, was left for dead and he didnt even get a shield agent to come assist...Pepper was kidnapped you dont think Fury would have had lent a hand to help prevent that??? Thats all my gripes!
