Baseball 2014

Well to start off a new season I have been watching today and last nights Mets and Blue Jays game playing in the Big "O" in Montreal. It was cool seeing the fans wearing their old Expos gear, chanting "Lets Go Expos" and honoring Gary Carter before last nights game.Today they are honoring the 94 Expos who had the best record in baseball in 94 before the strike killed the season

These fans are hungry.I remember when the Expos were playing their last season there in 04 and it was sad only 3000 per game.It is like they know they did bad by not attending the games that eventually sent the Expos to Washington were the become the Nationals.Too bad it wasn't the Nationals that were playing the Blue Jays instead of the Mets.I'm sure they would of gotten booed like crazy. They may not be the Expos they knew but it is a message they would of sent.

Both games have had large crowds the old Expo mascot going through the stands and seeing the place for the first time in a decade bought back memories of the old Philies/Expo rivalies of the early 80's.Pete Rose,Mike Shmidt and Steve Carlton vs Cary carter,Time Raines and Andre Dawson.

Yep the place was full this weekend. If baseball ever decides to expand again I wouldn't be at all surprised if Montreal got a new franchise...Possibly the rebirth of the expos themselves.

I predict another 100 plus loss season for my Astros... I know we are rebuilding but its still hard to watch...

Is ridiculous what they do there I wonder if they ever care about having a winner

The Astros is a "small market" team... We can only build through the draft which in baseball takes years... Once in a while we get lucky with a player that wants to play closer to home... We just cant win bidding wars against teams like the Yankees... I really wanted Tanaka but I knew where he would eventually land...

I know they are small market but the team has some money too improve. They may not win overnight but it would get them alot closer

We do have the best farm system in MLB according to "experts"... I can only hope...

I hate to sound like a party pooper but where is the Mike Trouts and Steven Strasberghs in the Astros minor leagues? They should follow what the Rays did.

We just suck at the wrong time... Phenoms like those guys and Harper don't come often...

I agree if you are talking about FAs spending but those guys were drafted... The Astros or any team would have drafted them given a chance... Penny pinching has nothing to do with it...

In the early 90's George wasn't in charge he had been suspended from baseball for two years.Well his replacement basically relyed on the farm system meaning Derek,Mariano,Bernie Williams,Andy Petitte and Jorge Posada were too benifit but the Yankees GM at the time Gene Micheal bought in players from winning teams that weren't huge stars at the time like Paul O'Neil and Jimmy Key..the only exception was Wade Boggs.

With this misture they started to win and in 96 went all the way. This is why I said they were penny pinchers bring in some who played on winning teams that aren't huge stars and get the chemistry going

The Astros are doing things the right way. They are doing it like the Rays, the A's, and the Cardinals by building from within. Like Nguyen said, it takes years to get to where they can field a competitive team with their prospects and fill in holes with free agents. The farm system was the worst in baseball years ago thanks to Drayton McLane, but Ed Wade got that turned around before he was fired by trading Lance Berkman, Roy Oswalt, Michael Bourn and Hunter Pence. Jeff Lunhow and his team have done a great job stocking the farm with prospects. Less than half will pan out so you have to have as many as you can in the hopes that you get those can't miss ones. It's stupid to say where are the Trouts and Strasburgs when these are generational talents that only come every so often. You do know Trout, though a first round pick, wasn't #1? Hell, Roy Oswalt was drafted in the 23rd round and he was one of the greatest Astros pitchers of the 00's. Either way, they've already done better against the Yankees than they did last year.

I think we finally started recovering from the fiasco that was Tim Purpura... I remember he couldn't sign draft picks while emptying the farm for over the hill players...

Its funny how we still "Boo Beltran"...
