  1. I was interviewed earlier this week for part of this article so take a gander. Link to article http://www.timesdispatch.com/servlet/Satel...s=1045855936229 Video mms://wmvod.mgnetwork.com/vod/rtd/20060716theo.
  2. Hi everyone, Sorry for the long delay in responding to any posts or e-mails that were sent out. I've been dealing with some personal stuff and am now just at a point where I can begin anew. There are three things that I wanted to give updates on so please take a quick gander. - After some long thought and consideration and after hearing points of view from both sides, I've decided that the final results for COTY will not revealed. While I can understand the curiosity of folks to see where they "placed" after being nominated, I think revealing that information takes away the point of COTY as being an award and recognition event, not necessarily a contest. This decision is final and standing for all future events. - Prizes, Prizes, Prizes!!!!!! Michael Crawford, Joe Amaro (last year's Honorary Award Winner) of Jazzwares and the kind gang at SOTA have donated several prizes for this year. A random drawing was held from all of the nominees and the winners are below. In addition to the donations above, I've included 3 grab bags of random figures/parts for the winners to use in their future customs. Prizes will be mailed out in 4-6 weeks. Please send me an e-mail to customoftheyear@yahoo.com with your name and latest mailing address. DST Buffy Vs. Dracula Mini-bust TR1ER Jazzware's Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks Scorpion vs Sub Zero two-pack J-Sun Jazzware's Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks Scorpion vs Sub Zero two-pack Cal SOTA Street Fighter: Vega (black figure) Julien Magnat SOTA Street Fighter: Sakura (red figure) Glassman6 SOTA Street Fighter: Guile Vahn SOTA Street Fighter: Rotocast Ryu Carl SOTA Cult Classics: Imhotep from "The Mummy Returns" Sam SOTA Cult Classics: Creeper from "Jeepers Creepers 2" Shivi Grab bag Mace2006 Grab bag Rombado Grab bag Darth Leon -Finally, as I begin to start the process for the next Custom of the Year awards, I am looking for a webmaster to update and run the Custom of the Year site (www.customoftheyear.com). While some of the details are still being worked out, some of the preliminary work will include: updating the COTY logo, creating an archive for past COTY winners and nominees, updating the site with latest news and rules; and research on hosting online voting at our website. Pay will be negotiable. If you or someone you know might be interested, please send me an e-mail at customoftheyear@yahoo.com With basic contact info and any sampling of past work. Thanks, Tommy
  3. Picked up Green Arrow to fit into my Silver Age collection (and so I wouldn't have to spend the money tracking down the two pack one) Green Arrow Points of Articulation: 14- ball jointed neck, semi-ball jointed shoulders, single jointed elbows, cut forearm (left arm), cut wrsit (right hand), cut waist,t-joint hips, single jointed knees, boot cuts Accessories: base, arrow, bow Pros: Great sculpt based off likeness in series, more than the usual DCD articulation, overall good standard pose. Cons: Again, the stuck joints. I had the hardest time moving his head and waist, even after putting him in the freezer. Paint application is slightly messy, iaround the neck, where the head and hat meet and slighty heavy on some parts of the body. As noted online his accessories are very fragile. The bow broke while trying to put it in his hand and the arrows on his back feel really fragile, with one already breaking while getting it out of the package. His sculpt also limits the type of poses he can be put in despite the added articulation. Overall: Good but not quite on target (heh) 3.5 stars out of 5
  4. So folks have been asking for pics so I took a few along with some commentary Enjoy! Blackhawk Points of Articulation: 14- ball jointed neck, semi-ball shuolders, single joint elbows, cut wrists, cut waist (!), t-joint hips, single joint knees, but boots Accessories: base, gun with two removable clips, holster for gun and pouch for clips (back of figure not pictured), holster and pouch are attached to figure, hat is not removable. Pros: great articulation for a DCD figure, great paint application and accessories plus it's the only Blackhawk figure released in 6 inch scale from DCD. Cons: stuck joints (I would put in freeezer before moving joints), gun doesn't fit into hand well Overall: 4 out of 5 stars Superman Points of Articulation: 11- ball jointed neck, semi- ball jointed shoulders, single jointed elbows, cut wrists, t-jointed hips, single join knees Accessories: base, movie camera Pros: great paint application, great sculpt accurate to source, closest we'll ever come to owning a Max Fleischer Supeman action figure Cons: Stuck joints, camera doesn't fit into hand too well Overall: 5 out of 5 stars Squinty eyed heroes unite!

  6. Hey gang, I just wanted to share some tidbits of stuff that has been changed for this upcoming year. -Three categories eliminated: Most Improved, Best PVC (bet you didn't know about that one) and Customizer of the Year -New category created: Breakthrough Customizer: outstanding customizer who has begun customizing or publicly exhibiting custom action figures or has shown breakthrough improvement in customizing within one year of the COTY awards --Categories combined: Best Base/ Diorama/Playset (used to be Base and Dioroma/Playset) -Confirmation e-mails of entries will be sent out (but you have to give me 3 business days folks to respond..that's business days) -No limit on how many categories you can enter but only one entry per category. Put your best work out there. -Some changes in entries (picture limit and specifications, recipe included, later entry date) There's a few other changes as well but nothing over the top or major. The judging format ("celebrity" judges first and online community second) will not be changing. I thought long and hard about this one and the basic argument comes down to trying to get folks to look at five choices per category (which was hard itself) versus 10, 20 or even 40 choices per category. I'll hopefully have judges determined at the end of this month but if you're a celebrity in the toy industry and might be interested, please shoot me an e-mail at customoftheyear@yahoo.com Thanks folks, Tommy

  9. Custom of the Year recognizes its first winners, Honorary Award Recipient. Public vote gathers and cast nearly 3000 votes. www.customoftheyear.com (May 25, 2005). With about two weeks to vote in 28 categories, the public casts nearly 3000 votes as they participated in the first annual Custom of the Year awards. With nearly 400 entries, a panel of five toy industry professionals narrowed down the list to five nominees in each category to be voted on by the public. The panel included Mike Horn, President of Palisades Toys; Chris Borman, Co-President of Plan-B Toys; Eric “Cornboy Mayse, sculptor for Four Horsemen Designs; and on-line toy reviewers, Michael Crawford of www.mwctoys.com and Julius Marx of www.actionfigureinsider.com. After nearly two weeks of voting, winners were chosen for such titles as Best Sculpt, Best Website, Best Packaging, Best Marvel and many more. The complete list of winners can be found at http://www.fwooshnet.com/%7Eezine/everythi...04-results.html. The complete lists of nominees can be found at www.customoftheyear.com. In addition to the voting, prizes were also raffled off among the nominees for actions figures, statues and mini-busts as donated by the sponsors of the awards. The Honorary Award Among the first traditions to be recognized among the custom of the Year awards is the Honorary Award. The Honorary Award is given out to recognize extraordinary distinction and contributions to the customizing and toy industry or for outstanding service to the toy industry. In the first year of these awards, the panel of toy industry professionals has selected, as the first recipient of this honor, Joe Amaro. Joe Amaro, like most customizers, began his work as a kid, taking a Cantina Member and turning him into an Imperial Officer from Star Wars. However, it wasn’t until 6 years ago, that the work became more serious when he entered and won a customizing contest in Toyfare. Since that time Joe has had not only other works published in that magazine but also contributed to exhibits, websites, and conventions. Below you’ll find a short sampling of his work: Star Wars: http://www.rebelscum.com/article.asp?i=7338 Castle Grayskull: http://www.joeamaro.net/JCCastle.html Count Marzo: http://www.joeamaro.net/JCCountMarzo.html Fisto’s Sword: http://www.figures.com/databases/action.cg...how_article=139 Jedi Council Diorama: http://www.niubniubsuniverse.com/C2W/journ...Up/00setup2.asp HeroClix Scale Galactus: http://www.joeamaro.net/galactus.html However, what makes Joe’s work stand out from the rest besides his many publications in Toyfare magazine and coverage online, is where his career is headed. Joe was recently contracted by Jazzwares to work on the Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter toy lines to help design new bodies and help with overall aesthetics. These base model prototypes will be used by Hong Kong sculptors as the line continues. It is here where Joe has made the most significant contribution: as a role model of a customizer transitioning into a toy sculptor and professional. More of Joe Amaro’s work can be seen at www.joeamaro.net For a complete list of nominees, please visit http://www.customoftheyear.com/custom.customs.html For more information on the nominating committee of judges for Custom of the Year 2004, visit http://www.customoftheyear.com/custom.judges.htm.
