I rarely venture outside of collecting anything other than Star Wars, G.I. Joe, or Transformers lines, but lately I've been considering getting a few superhero figures. I used to be a huge comics fan, but in recent years the aforementioned lines took up all of my time and money, so comic books have taken a backseat for several years, especially since the rise in cover prices.

In my online research, I keep gravitating towards the Marvel Select figures. They seem to be really nice, like well-sculpted and painted Marvel Legends figures on steroids. I like anything X-Men-related, and I like Daredevil, Spider-Man, Punisher, Iron Man, and...I even find myself being drawn to The Hulk. I never really cared for the character growing up; it did nothing for me to read about a huge, green, rage-filled character, even though I liked the tv show. It was just never very heroic to me, at least looking in from the outside. I understand the character has gone through many iterations over the years where he came across as a little more relatable, with varying degrees of intelligence and self-control. So there have been times where I was kinda drawn to the character, despite my misgivings. I even remember a friend letting me borrow his "Maestro" graphic novel, and I loved it, although I can't remember much of the story it's been so many years. The closest I've come to collecting anything Hulk-related was a couple of Marvel Legends action figures; I had Maestro, the first or second version of the green Hulk with articulated hands (I think), and the "Hulk-Buster" Iron Man...all of which I sold of course. And I can't even be sure of the regular Hulk figure I had; maybe I just wanted it at some point, but it seems like I had it and sold it. Aw crap...I don't remember. That's what happens when you collect for years and get old. (lol)

I do still have a movie Hulk figure I bought to go with my G.I. Joes; I imagined a scenarion where Cobra designed this "rage/beserker mutation" serum, where an average Cobra Trooper would be injected with it and intentionally set up to be captured by the Joes as a "sleeper-cell" element if you will, where just at the right moment, deep inside The Pit, in custody the soldier could be activated to mutate into a nigh-invulnerable "hulk" that would lay waste to their headquarters, tearing it apart from the inside out, and the Joes would have the fight of their lives on their hands. Crazy, I know, but I thought it was a cool scenario. Hey...the Hulk figure in question even had blue pants like a Cobra Trooper would wear. (lol)

But anyway...I remember a few years ago when the Marvel Select green Hulk came out, and I was absolutely mesmerized by that figure. I had never really like the character of course but...I can't describe it. I loved the sculpting, the expression on his face, the colors...it just screamed "Ultimate Hulk Figure" to me, and I've been so tempted several times over the years to get it.

I guess in discussing the Hulk character in general and why I'm warming up to him as it were, when I saw the fairly-recent Ang Lee film, I liked it, and I was fascinated by the David/Bruce Banner character that possessed this "curse" as it were that he never asked for, nor could he completely control. I guess it's the whole classic "Wolfman" tale, where the normal nice guy secretly harbors this dark and monstrous yet powerful secret that he can't control, but it comes out when he's provoked or pushed too far. Something about that notion appeals to me now. Maybe it was too deep for my naive childhood sensibilities to grasp or appreciate fully, but now I find it quite interesting.

So...long story short, I've been mulling over buying some Marvel Select figures, namely the green Hulk. Can you guys give me some info and/or opinions? The top three I'm most interested in right now are the green Hulk, Magneto (helmeted version), and Daredevil. Are they worth the money? What kind of overal quality do they sport?

I'm pretty happy with the MS figures i've picked up. The Hulk is definitely one of my favorites followed by the Thing. The Hulk displays well on its own so i'd recommend buying it if you like it already. It wont disappoint.I believe they're still $20.00 so you're even get pretty good melt value

MS Hulk is the top 3 best Hulks out there, maybe even number 1. in my opinion the other Hulks that come in second are the recent TRU 2 pack , great body sculpt and best articulation, also the toy biz 2 pack great body and design.

The best Hulk is the 2 pack Marvel Legends one. He came with the Leader, it has that classic 70's/early 80's Hulk look. The only downside is his hands, he has no fisting ability, its either a slap or a slight grip. I would research that before getting the MS version.

Marvel Legends are coming back in full force in early 2012. The first figure will be released this year at SDCC to celebrate their return (Modern Thor).


As for your question DevilBat, I don't collect Marvel Select figures because they are in the 7 inch scale, and thus would not be compatible with my EXTENSIVE Marvel Legends collection. From what I have seen, the figures are VERY nice, but I have never held a loose one. But still, like I said, with the Marvel Select line, if you collect them, you would have a very small collection with little chance for expansion. I never saw the point myself to get a few 7 inch figures when I already have hundreds of 6 inchers. That being said, the only Marvel Select figure I ever bought was the Thanos figure, because I felt that his massive size could pass in the Marvel Legends line because he is huge anyways.

Like I said, if you bought 3 Marvel Select figures, what would you do with them? It wouldn't be much of a collection lol... but if those are your favorite characters, why not?

Personally, my favorite Hulk is the Face Off Hulk from the Toybiz Marvel Legends.


on a side note, have you ever considered the Marvel Universe figures to go with your GiJoes? I am hooked on them and they go great with the 25th/modern Joes. (But they haven't made a decent Hulk or Magneto. And their DD is a bit squatty)

Well, I'm not real interested in building a huge superhero collection, so the scale issue is a non-issue for me actually. Oddly enough, as OCD as I can be sometimes, it wouldn't bother me to have figures of varying scales, although I wouldn't display them together. I'd display them seperately according to the line they represent, which I guess is more OCD than making sure different lines are compatible. Besides, there are only a few characters I'd be interested in anyway. I'm not a fan of just anything and everything Marvel related. The same could be said for DC, but anyway...

As for considering Marvel Universe figures for G.I. Joe, I have actually. But I'd just pose them together maybe; I really don't play with my figures. Were I a kid again however, the possibilities would have been endless. I've come close several times to buying some Marvel Universe figures, but I always choke and put them back. I don't know why really. I guess it's due to my limited budget and the fact that I focus more on Star Wars, G.I. Joe, and Transformers; I convince myself that I can't afford any more collections. (lol)

yeah, I mean when I buy toys, I look for things that will never actually be a factor for me as an adult. Like when I see a cool vehicle that I could put some figures in, I think of how I would have played with it as a kid.. or the new Joes with all of their accessories, even though I won't ever do anything with them other than look at them... and like the new Skystriker that I am going to pass on because I would only be able to put one figure in their instead of two (even though that shouldn't matter to a grown up and I will never play with it)... and when I buy the new Marvel figures I think of how they could fight my Joes, even though I won't ever play with them..

the most I ever do NOW with any toy I buy is open it, pose it for a few minutes, then put it on the shelf... and never touch it again

I only have 1 MS figure and it is the Ultimate Hulk. I'm not a huge Hulk fan, but sometimes one will grab me. The UH is just huge and heavy. I guess that's what sold me on it. Whatever you decide on, good luck. The Marvel Icons Hulk is pretty mean as well.

Well, it's been quite awhile since I mulled over the Marvel Select figures, but earlier this evening my wife and I were out shopping on our Valentine's Day date (Yeah, we're pretty boring...) (lol), and we went to a local mall where there was a Disney store. I had recently seen some Marvel Select figures popping up there, but I still hadn't bought any. So being in a weird, on-a-whim/I'm-not-looking-for-anything-in-particular mood I decided I'd check it out and see what they had. I saw some cool new classic versions of Captain America, Wolverine, and a new Spider-Man sculpt, but the big find was the green Hulk I had been flip-flopping on getting for absolutely ever!! Man...this thing is HUGE!! You guys weren't kidding!! (lol) I carried that thing all over the mall, and it actually began to get heavy before I got outta there. (lol) Never mind that I've never been a big Hulk fan, this thing is really a work of art. It is one of the most incredible action figures I have ever seen. It really makes me want to seek out the rest now.

He is a gem DB! One of my fav MS figs!! I also really like the Hasbro 2 pack one from last year as far as Hulk's go. SOme of my fav MS figs are Gambit, Wolverine (tiger stripe), Emma Frost, Ghost Rider, Bucky Cap, Sabertooth and Deadpool. Dare Devil is nice just kinda scrawny.

I second this Juggernaut is one of the best, there's something about the overall sculpt that's just awesome, you won't be disappointed.

I picked the Abomination figure, and that one is HUGE. The sculpt on it is great as well. I would recommend it with the others mentioned above.

Yea I really like the MS line, but don't have to many. The only one I have that is with my ML line is Sabertooth. That figure is just awesome.

I was thinking bout getting a MS Juggs to replace my ML Juggs, but not tall that sure. Same thing with Colossus

I have MS Thanos and the Watcher to go with my Legends figures. Both should be bigger dudes, so the scale is fine. Thanos is awesome, well articulated, and comes with alternate hand/Infinity Gauntlet and Death figure!

Um, guys...is the MS Hulk's head supposed to swivel side to side? I opened mine earlier this evening, and when I tried to turn it from side to side, it broke off in my hand!! Crap!! Now I gotta go dig the receipt out of the garbage I already took out and hope they take it back at the store and let me exchange it. *sigh*
