Personally I'm really excited about this. They're not retconning or rebooting, they're basically just having a massive change in creative direction. I think the catalyst behind this move is Bendis moving from Avengers to X-Men. I've heard that he's going to have the full scope of Marvel characters to work with, where normally the X-Men just stick with X-related characters.

My one worry is that the Hulk (red Hulk) comic will come to an end. I've enjoyed that comic since the intrigue of the early issues. I also expect Avengers Assemble to end. I've enjoyed that one as well, but Uncanny Avengers will take it's place in my stack so I'm not too hung up on that.

What do you guys think?

They're not retconning or rebooting,

Tell that to Nick Fury.

It's hilarious reading the editor's comments on this. It's verbatim what DC editor's fed us last year. Verbatim.

I don't really care. If you read comics, you just need to realize that they are now event driven and not story driven. If you're looking for the later, you need to strictly stick to back issues.

It appears that even Spiderman has gotten a new costume. I hate when movies infulences the look of a character - Captain America.

So are they going to completely write off white Fury to make room for his son aka Shaft fury?

Spidey's suit doesn't look too different. Besides his blue being black...it seems pretty much the same.

I understand the automatic impulse to compare this to the new 52, but at least Marvel is trying to move their stories along and not disregard 70+years of history. At least they are not going the "hey, this great character that you all have known for 70 years is gay, screw his kids that some of you really like" route.

The red that connects the shoulders to the wrists is missing. The shoulders resemble the Alex Ross spiderman art.

Can't tell about the other parts of his body, but I would not be shocked if they were heavily inspired by the Alex Ross costume.

I'm going to devote a shelf to figures of characters that were good enough when I was a kid but for some reason needed to be altered in modern times for....whatever reason. So far on my shelf I will display my ML white Nick Fury, my Teenage MUTANT Ninja Turtles, and my Star Wars Sebastian Shaw Anakin Skywalker. If I had a G1 VW Bumblebee, he'd be there too.

Who else.....???

I have more faith in Marvel then I do in DC. With Avengers doing so well at the box office, Marvel has the great advantage of new readers actually wanting to pick their comics and now is as great a time as ever for them to update their characters and freshen them up a little. DC's problem was that the weighted everything on their new DC Online game and it failed miserably.

I'm very happy to see Nova and Rocket Raccoon on that Marvel Now poster. Gives me hope that Marvel hasn't given up on their cosmic characters.

I'm of the mind that they're not writing white Nick Fury off completely because his LMD Max Fury still involved with the Shadow Council and I can see them doing the Fury Max series for a while (I find it a great fit for the character). Some day, some writer will get approval from some new editor to bring the old Nick Fury back into the main Marvel Universe.

Now, I haven't heard if Red Hulk is being written out as well. Is it just the comic that's coming to an end?

I was just worried that they'd end the title. I don't know anything for sure about that. I'm sure they won't write the character out after putting so much effort in him for 4 years.

i stick to spidey as always but these constant costume changes are boring. cyclops barely got his phoenix design and now he looks like movie daredevil. i dont know about this but i am not really looking forward to it. maybe i will stop the marvel universe for a while and just get the spidey comics. i will see whats coming in a few years from now because right now its just costume changes. thor with blades, please. a nail would make more sense then that since he has a hammer.

This just in - Marvel cancels 9 titles. Including:

Captain America

Invincible Iron Man

Fantastic Four

FF

Mighty Thor

Incredible Hulk

Uncanny X-Men

New Mutants

X-Men Legacy

I think cancelled should be in quotations. There's no way they'll stay cancelled. I expect a relaunch. I spend too much on comics as it is and with Uncanny Avengers starting I could really stand to replace a title. Thor has been lacking anyway. Incredible Hulk is entertaining though. Those are the only 2 from that list that I read.

Thoughts?

This here is proof that this is nothing more than an event stunt, borne because DC made a ton of money last year off of relaunches. There is no way those core title are going away for any length of time. No way. Only question here is when will the new #1s come out.

Like I say, I don't really care becuase Avengers and X-Men have saddly become nothing more than a cluster-f of title upon title, both franchises about 3 times the size they need to be. I've tuned them out a long time ago.

I hope Daredevil and Winter Soldier are untouched by this. I read them partly because they have noting to do with either of those other franchises (well, as much as any book CAN be anyway. Isn't pretty much every MU character a deputized Avenger now?) so the potential I will get a good, self-contained story is higher. I also like the creative teams and directions both books are taking. But since they're good, it will probably come to an end soon.

This just in: http://www.usatoday.com/life/comics/story/2012-08-03/Marvel-NOW-relaunch-teaser-comics/56722806/1

Looks like most of the 9 titles are being teased for relaunch. So here I thought Thor and Hulk, the only 3 titles from the "cancelled list" that I read, will be going away for at least a little while. My whole comic book reading world was coming apart at the seams!

In the end the only book I'm going to be missing is (Red) Hulk which is turning into Red She Hulk this fall. I have no desire to read about Betty Ross-Banner as an over-aggressive ripoff adjective less She-Hulk. So I guess Uncanny Avengers takes the place of that title. All New X-Men will likely replace either Avengers or New Avengers. There's an outside chance that I'll read all both Avengers titles, but one of them is supposed to have a team of over 40 members. I'm not down with that. I like 6-8 members sort of like the roster for Avengers Assemble, which is great if you haven't read it. That book is changing creative teams after Bendis's initial arc. That's another one I may drop. I like to try to keep my comic spending at around $60 a month. It appeases the wife lol! @loll@

To me it just seems like a lot of the characters are taking a big step backwards. Granted I have all but completely given up reading Marvel right now (Only reading Amazing Spiderman, Iron Man and X-force) but I still try to keep up with what going on is most of the other titles. Not to say that a lot of these don't seem interesting, but Marvel just keeps on retreading the same thing and bashes DC when they do it. I give DC a lot of credit for the NU 52. It took a lot of balls to just start over and it's payed off for them.

For Marvel they just are shuffling people around. I might try Uncanny Avengers, but that's it. Too many Avengers books are out there and while you can pull that off with a large cast of characters it's just too much. Same goes for the X-men for me. While Bendis' new X-men title seems interesting (the one where he's bring the original five from the past to the present), it seems to me like it won't end well.

Iron Man seems like it might be a step backwards and the armor design definitely is. I just don't see the point in the Hulk books any more. Too many Hulk like characters running around and Unless they have a big surprise finish to the Hulk book that's being published right now (Hey, Hulk and Banner are separated and fighting each other. Bet they get hooked back together in the end). Thor sounds interesting, but I just don't care anymore (he's alive, he's dead, he's alive, he disappeared, he's back again...). Fantastic Four might be good, but the FF looks horrible. Cap seems like they have the right idea by taking him in a completely different direction then he has been in for a while. And Spidey looks to be staying the same.

So all it all, I might stay with Iron Man, I'll stick with Spidey until Slott leaves and since I haven't heard anything about X-force I'll just have to wait and see.

as much as I have been against reboots for years, Marvel has become such a convulted mess of contradiction and back and forth shock events and changes that unless it fully reboots I will likely never buy another title. Batman tpbs still catch my eye because they are mostly self contained and there aren't numbers all over the covers and i don't need to track down multiple issues to understand what is going on.

For me to be interested in Marvel again they need to reboot, and divide their universe. X-men in one chunk, Avengers, Spider-man and fantastic four and such in a chunk, and Blade and supernatural guys in one chunk. I should be able to buy only one series and understand the story all the way through. Yes I know people like crossovers, let them be their own out of continuity shots, or have them entirley in a single series (only in Avengers per say) and yes I know carving the marvel u in three parts sounds weird and characters like quicksilver go into sections, but decisions need to be made. Death needs to be permanent 100% of the time.

I think you're on the right track. For ME to be interested in Marvel again, they need to trim the fat, cut down on all these multiple X and Avengers franchise titles. Streamline the brand. As it is now, they're just trying to crank out as much product as possible.(ANOTHER X-Men book just started! Why would I be any more interested in that than the other 10???) Marvel was cool back in the day because if you liked X-Men, you could just read the X-Men book. I'm not saying don't do crossovers, but cut way down on them so that when they actually do happen, it's kinda cool because it's something you don't see all the time. Enough of this event-driven, EVERYTHING CHANGES HERE! BS. Find a writer who has ideas for good Spider-Man stories, for good Hulk stories. Make me want to pick up the next issue because I can't wait to see what happens next. If you do have two Avengers titles, show us why they're different, enough of the teams meeting up, mixing and trading team members (and creative teams)every other issue. Show us WHY one book is different from the other. Why is title _____ special???

As much as I hate crossovers I hate events even more. Now it seems story arcs are just building towards the next "big" event. There's the event main event book and 120 tie-in books and after the event passes the status quo changes yet again. This is one of the reasons that Captain America and Daredevil have been some of my favorite books this past decade since they pretty much exist in their own little corner of the Marvel Universe unaffected by events and stuff sure every now and then they'll make a reference to the event going on but for the most part they didn't deviate from the story they were telling. Now Yojoebro brings a good example with the X-books they keep coming up with more and when they do a crossover it's a nightmare because the event starts in Uncanny X-men continues in X-force, then in New mutants then in X-men Legacy so on and so forth, it's horrible. Funny thing is one of the reasons they decided to depower the mutants was because they were too many and they were trying to have a more manageable number. I really hope this Marvel Now fixes some of this problems although right now I'm not holding my breath plus I'm not crazy about the designs either. At the very least this would provide and ending point from where I can work my way back to older issues and know when not to go further.

I'm boldly looking ahead at the solicits for November, December, and January. A couple of things.

Down right laughable how one month they will list a title and proclaim in big capital letters FINAL ISSUE! then the very next month, lo and behold! the same title appears only with a different writer and now it's a #1 instead of a #thirty-something. PLEASE, GOD, ENOUGH WITH THE NUMBERING GAMES!!! I mean, how can a book hope to survive into its 30s??? That would almost require the editors and creative teams to hold interest in the book based on QUALITY of CONTENT rather than the gimmick of sticking a 1 on the cover.

Where's Winter Soldier? The book is in the November solicits (with no FINAL ISSUE! lable) but then is missing from December and January. Is WS done? Though I buy it and enjoy it, I'd almost welcome it as being one step close to being done with Marvel all together. Only X-Facor and Daredevil to go.
