Well when it rains it pours

With people coming out about how they didn't like the prequels Spielberg now comes out on his opinion of The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have worked in tandem on the last four Indiana Jones films—with Spielberg handling the visuals and Lucas in charge of the script. While that arrangement worked like a charm for the first three archaeological adventures, Spielberg admits there were ... problems ... with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

While talking to Empire Magazine about Tintin, Spielberg mentioned that Lucas is hard at work on the story for Indiana Jones 5—and took the time to explain his feelings about the oft-criticized Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull:

"I'm very happy with the movie. I always have been ... I sympathise with people who didn't like the MacGuffin because I never liked the MacGuffin. George and I had big arguments about the MacGuffin. I didn't want these things to be either aliens or inter-dimensional beings. But I am loyal to my best friend. When he writes a story he believes in—even if I don't believe in it—I'm going to shoot the movie the way George envisaged it. I'll add my own touches, I'll bring my own cast in, I'll shoot the way I want to shoot it, but I will always defer to George as the storyteller of the Indy series. I will never fight him on that."

However, Spielberg can't quite defend everything about Skull. He even agrees with that most notorious fan complaint:

"What people really jumped at was Indy climbing into a refrigerator and getting blown into the sky by an atom-bomb blast. Blame me. Don't blame George. That was my silly idea. People stopped saying 'jump the shark.' They now say, 'nuked the fridge.' I'm proud of that. I'm glad I was able to bring that into popular culture."

Well, I suppose it's nice to be proud of something Crystal Skull-related.

The thing is, there are still so many cool mysteries and myths and legends from ancient history to pull from. Them going 'off planet' for the MacGuffin did the franchise a disservice. He's an archeologist, not an astronaut. He should be hunting for Atlantis or Excalibur or something.

I really don't think it did the franchise a disservice at all. The movies follow the themes of the era. Raiders, Temple and Crusade all follow the formula of the adventure movie/serial. It's like Zorro, Secret of the Incas, The Mummy et al. Crystal Skull changed things being set in the 1950s. The big theme of the 50s was sci-fi and daikaiju. I really don't think Indy meets THEM! would have worked, so they went for the most logical option and having the idea of Indy and little green men.

Ancient Aliens is also a very common conspiracy theory these days. There's been many books based on the idea that aliens visited ancient cultures and civilizations and helped them in every aspect of their lives, helped them build things and left.

I'm so glad to see at least a few fans acknowledge the viability behind the concept for KOTCS. It made complete sense considering the time period and what was going on back then. As much as I loved the movie though, I will also admit the nitpick of hating the monkey scene as well. (lol) But that's my absolute only gripe. I loved it.

I liked the first half of KOTCS(even the fridge!)...up til about when Marion joined up. After that, Indy took a backseat to the action when it was divided up among so many characters. It was still a fun movie (the monkey thing was the only part that really bothered me)...I like it better than The Last Crusade, which has just as many flaws.

I just hope they go back to the supernatural for number 5 like something based of HP love crafts works maybe about the Necronomicon

Indiana Jones needs a reboot with Bradley Cooper or Aaron Eckhart as Indiana Jones. They also need to get a new creative team and drop the prima donnas Lucas and Spielberg. I also feel strongly about a Ghostbusters Reboot since Bill Murray is also a prima donna. You get the right creatve team in there you could get a long line of successful films, not just 2 or 3.

Y'know feat, as much as I love both movies, I agree...Crusade almost became too comical and fantastical at times. And it did seem like one big family reunion towards the end of Crystal Skull. I don't know that it ever occured to me until just now. I guess every character served their purpose well enough; Mutt was the tag-along "understudy", as it were, and they were trying to save Marion of course, but then they were also saving Oxley, who was a dear friend of them all, and Mac was the friend-turned-traitor-turned-friend-then-back-to-traitor. (I think?) (lol) It just almost became too much.

Like I said, and you as well, I could have completely done without the monkeys, but that was pretty much my only contention with it. It was just so much fun to see Indy kicking after all these years.

I couldnt' believe they brought back his ex girlfriend. It has a few twists in it, and i'm guessing here, it made it more entertaining..but the ending was uncalled for. It's already hard to believe all those clues and booby traps, but aliens? c'mon.... @grumpy@

yeah well indy 4 was ok. i kind of liked it myself. as most, the monkey scene was to much and everything was so clean that it looked fake most of the time. same thing happend with the new star wars trilogy. now that lucas will retire, where does that leave indy 5 anyway?

Haven't all the Indy flicks been about supernatural stuff?

Yup, and and to a further degree, supernatural stemming from religious artifacts.

"God's head doesn't look like that."

"Depends on who your god is."

I don't get the negative backlash on this movie solely based on "Aliens don't belong in an Indiana Jones movie." Though the execution might be lacking(monkey swing?), the theme totally fits.

I take it the anti-aliens Indy fans never got as deep into the expanded world of Indiana Jones in comics, video games, and The Young Indy series...I mean, if they had a hard time swallowing aliens with an ancient religious connection, I dont know how they would take some of the other crap: the Golden Fleece, vampires, zombie-Nazis, Vikings, rooming with Elliot Ness, etc.

Yup...Indian artifact plus a lame story about The Untouchables Babies....It happened.

George was playing off the old Flying Saucer scaring of people back in the 50's Thats why he used them.I have no problem with this because I'm very sure we have been visited before.

Yup, and that's another angle that should work fine in Indiana Jones. Execution, again, lacking...but Older Indy in the 1950's + transitioning from 30's serial to pulpy 50's sci-fi + ancient religious artifacts of alien origin = totally acceptable in my love of the Indiana Jones canon.

I think he mentioned retiring to make smaller films, but mentioned still wanting to persue Indy 5. fingers crossed.

I liked the movie, but two parts really threw me off. First the fridge, no matter how many times I see the movie I groan at that part. Im telling you that was some super cheese, even for an indy flick. Second was Mutt, I mean really, his name is Mutt!.Way to kill a character, dads name is indy and he gets mutt...lame. Otherwise the aliens didnt bug me, I mean weve had arks, stones and grails...so why not alien skulls. Oh and the russians were a good alternate for the Nazis, and those ants still kinda creep me out.
