Talk about Amazing Spider-Man 2 here

The good:

Spider-Man was well done. If you were not a fan of the "emo" Spidey from ASM, you'll be happy to see almost no sign of him here. The Spidey action and humor were both well done. I enjoyed all of the action scenes: opening crime-in-progress chase, time square show down, electrical plant...Slow motion is something that's getting overused in Hollywood and you will see it in this movie, but for ASM2 it makes sense. What it's used for is to depict his spider-sense and it works in that the action is being slowed down for the audience the same way it is for Spidey. It's handled well and doesn't seem out of place or gratuitous. Also, Spidey's powers are unique enough (with the web shooting, the swinging, the spidey-sense) that you're not really thinking "I've seen this before". He gets pretty creative with the web shooting, which is neat.

Also, Spidey takes time to help the little guy, and I think that's very important. Walking a kid home after saving him from bullies and stopping a robbery while he has a cold (in costume) make Spidey look like a super hero of the people, which he absolutely should be. This is the kind of stuff I wanted to see Superman doing onscreen....when he wasn't busy being so "epic".

The Peter/Gwen romance was done well. We cared about both of them so that by the time Gwen dies, we actually care about it. Thank God they didn't try to smoosh Mary Jane in this movie. It would have been even more over crowded (see "The bad") and the Peter/Gwen relationship and the impact of her death would have definitely taken a hit.

Electro and Green Goblin were both interesting. I enjoyed both the performances by Fox and the guy that plays Harry, each was well acted. If you would have taken either of them and put them in their separate movies, it would have been great (again, see "the bad"). And in all honesty, I can see why people would think Rhino is "tacked on" at the end...he definitely is in a way. But they're showing Peter getting back out there and fighting the perpetual fight of the superhero. Ending the movie mid-fight was the best way to do it if you're going to choose to go that rout. So I'm tempted to give the inclusion of the Rhino a pass...

(Soapbox: it's time for fanboys everywhere to get over the "This-costume-doesn't-look-like-the-original-art-so-now-I'm-not-watching-it" pouttiness. When you're engrossed in the movie, it almost never matters in the long run. Superheroes and villains change costumes all the time...)

I always love the Stan Lee cameos. He's a great guy....it never gets old :) @Spidey@

The Bad:

This movie had about six plots. If they had chose the one-villain rout (even IF they chose to keep the Rhino at the end) it would have been much better. As it stand, the powers that be are trying to fast forward to the Sinister Six and the movie takes a hit for it. What would have been really cool is if they had done a more lighthearted story with just Electro as the villain for ASM2, then saved the darker Green Goblin story with Gwen's death for ASM3. They may have even gotten away with introducing MJ earlier if this were the case. And they would definitely had more time to build the Peter/Gwen/Harry trio.

The WTF?:

Mystique in the after credits? OK........?

B+. Trim off some of the multiple plot and you would have had it in the "A" range.

Yeah, I knew when I first herd of the early Spider-Man movie reboot that one of the reasons was going to be so that they could get the Gwen death story on screen. This was no surprise but I was kind of hoping that they'd just keep her alive. Gwen's death was a great classic story in the comics but these two movies have worked well with her, it kinda feels too soon. And that article was right, every comic geek knew what was coming but the majority (the non comic fans, my fiance) were surprised.

Gwen was a strong character. What they probably should have done was save this part and the actress for Mary Jane, make Gwen more generic so we wouldn't miss her as much. Chances are the inevitable Peter/MJ relationship won't be as good, but maybe I'll be proven wrong.

........................I guess no one saw this movie.

@Spidey@

Well, in other Spidey news, I've been giving the comic a shot. It just recently switched back over to being Amazing Spider-Man after it was Superior Spider-Man for about a year. I have to admit that one of my favorite things about the whole Superior story line were the life-long fans who were so outraged that Peter Parker was "gone for good" that they vowed to never pick up an issue ever again. The thing that puzzled me was, since they claimed this "life-long fan" status, you'd think they would be able to spot a temporary story line when they see one. Did anyone really think that Perter Parker would never, ever, ever come back? Ever? Sure enough, Peter is, indeed back. And it happened exactly at the time I predicted-just in time for the new movie! Shocking!

Anyway, I'm enjoying the book. Erasing the marriage to MJ years and years ago really put me off but after giving it a shot, Peter's life seems to be evolving in other ways, which is nice. There are also a lot of elements that are rooted in the old Lee/Ditko books, and that's fun to see (that 60's robot as a recurring character is great, "Would you like a refreshing beverage?") I still refuse to get that Barack Obama band wagon issue they put out around election time....oops, sorry, that was political. But I guess no one is here to get offended anyway.

In yet more Spidey news, I believe the Spider-Man Classics Scorpion may be the coolest action figure I bought in 2014...and this is a 10 year old toy. It easily hold up to anything on the shelves today.

I apologize to everyone who just wants to talk about ASM 2 for hijacking this thread with comic talk @hammerhead#

I watched ASM2 with my wife and kids over the weekend. I thought it was great, better than I was expecting to be honest. I was initially annoyed with the look of electro and Fox being the actor, but electro's creation, look, and role were very believable (if a man of electricity can be believable). Fox did a good job in character. He did not over-act the roll as I was initially concerned about. I loved the guy that portrayed Harry, he was perfect. His look could have been better, but it was MUCH better than that ugly Gobby costume in the Toby SM film. The Pete and Gwen story was amazing. Garfield and Stone have a great chemistry and it really added to the emotional side of their story. I have to agree with others that I'm not sure if they can even get close to that with MJ, we'll see. Rhino was "tacked on" at the end, but like yojoebro said, it was actually fitting. All in all, I like this movie a lot. I felt it was better than the first film. I'm looking forward to ASM3.

Eh, I've seen them review various geek movies. They bring up some good points and have some funny bits but I'll take them more seriously if I ever see them do a favorable review and prove they're not being curmudgeon-y just for the sake of being curmudgeon-y.

Yeah and so did you.

And hey, they hate Orci and Kurtzman and so do you.

And they like to find the flaws in everything, and so do you.

HEY......wait a minute, are you ONE OF those three guys in real life??? God, I hope you're not the one on the right with the high pitched laugh @smilepunch@

Are you saying you like Orci and Kurtzman? At least I know youre not Orci...he cant take criticism: http://www.tor.com/blogs/2013/09/bob-orci-blows-up-at-star-trek-fans-for-not-adoring-into-darkness

And if you're Alex, sorry you don't get to put your stink on Star Trek 3: http://www.deadline.com/2014/05/roberto-orci-frontrunner-to-helm-star-trek-3/

C'mon, Joe...you aren't going to be one of those fanboys that negates other's criticisms like they have no voice of their own just because they happen to share/agree with the criticisms of a published/popular work? Shared thoughts should only strengthen the validity. I posted Cracked's similar, yet voiced in a completely different entertaining manner, article on ASM3, but you chose to go right for "the Plinkett guys." Don't be like one of those humorless, one-sided Star Wars drones.

I mean, #$##...I personally cant like one Disney/Marvel effort just because I happen to dislike most of their efforts? All or nothing?

Heck no. I'm fine with their criticism, your criticism, their opinions, your opinions.....

I just find many similarities between their views and your views on this kind of stuff and wanted to very tongue-in-cheekly point it out. Hence the @smilepunch@ face.

I kind of like Half in the Bag they humorously pointed out the things I disliked about Man of Steel. I haven't seen their ASM2 "review" but that's because I actually haven't seen the movie yet and I don't want to spoil myself more than I already have. Please don't knock the fact Feat liked Cap 2 that validates my belief that Marvel made a fine piece of entertainment. In all seriousness there is something I read the other day that really bothered me when I usually don't let things like that bother me. I was reading some news article about ASM2 and in the comments section someone posted that they didn't like ASM2 and that they preferred Cap 2, this was followed by a bunch of people saying that Cap 2 was overrated and that ASM2 was better because it was more comic book-y. They always criticize Marvel Studios movies for not being serious enough not or they go "overboard" with the humor or overuse of the cgi, Marvel Studios makes a Captain America where they didn't not only nailed the character, it was well acted, little to no cgi, well choreographed fights, an interesting plot that mirrors real life politics, humor without going "overboard" while still being pretty faithful to the source material and fanboys say ASM2 is better because it's more comic book like WTF? that's not even discussing how every review I have read ends saying the movie is good enough but not great. Fanboys can't be pleased.

Are you saying you like Orci and Kurtzman?

I'm pretty indifferent to them in all honesty. I know they played a hand in the Transformers stink and yes, I read that Orci meltdown over Star Trek fan criticism, he came off sounding like a douche.

I may not vet my movies well enough before I go see them because so far I've seen two movies that I thought were OK (Now You See Me and ASM 2) and I had no idea they were involved until I read the end credits.

I will stick with my ASM 2 criticism and agree with you and the HITB guys that the plot was a mess and that's probably on them...

And going back to Half in the Bag, I do agree with them completely on Man of Steel and SW prequels, so no, I would not call myself a mindless SW drone.

Again, heck no. Everyone here liked Cap 2, we're glad you do too.

My comment about you being one of the Half in the Bag dudes was a joke. It's all good. @joker@

Here's hoping the Trek franchise reconsiders Orci's involvement with Spidey cooling down...http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3837&p=.htm

Sorry for getting a bit off topic, and I dont like that the character of Spider-man has to go down with the ship...but I cannot stress how much I loathe Roberto Orci and everything he touches.

I HATED the first ASM movie. I am a lifelong Spidey fan and just felt like no effort went into it. I felt like Andrew Garfield was terribly cast and the Lizard looked like green Voldemort.

I went into ASM 2 with very little expectations. I really enjoyed it though! While I didn't consider it a good/credible movie it was entertaining. It had a ton of problems, but a huge improvement over the first.

Maybe Spider Man going down with the ship isn't so bad, maybe Sony will wise up and scratch future sequels and the Sinister Six spin off and the Venom spin off, maybe they'll say "we can't handle Spider Man" and give the rights back to Marvel maybe.......in a perfect world.

Eh...I know Im in the minority, but I like that there are a few properties (X-men, Spidey) that have characters and stories strong enough to merit their own lil universes. Sure, that doesnt always mean better movies, but there's always the potential to tell some great stories without feeling like it has to connect to something bigger all the time.

I understand, and I know everyone wants Spidey in the Marvel Studios so they can stick him in the Avengers but I was thinking more out of curiosity of what Marvel Studios could do with the character since Sam Raimi dropped the ball in Spider Man 3 and apparently the new franchise is not doing that great job of handling the character from what I hear. At this point I don't mind Fox keeping the rights to X-men sure the continuity mess, the lack of Cyclops, the Wolverine centric plot and 90% of the cast bothers me but I prefer Marvel Studios concentrate on other things right now, like Ant-Man, Black Panther, the Netflix series, Inhumans among others. The majority of people get the X-men movies they want, Marvel concentrates on other properties everyone wins.
