Toy Fair 2009: DC Direct

DC Direct continues to under-whelm me.

They seem to want to leave the action figures behind and dive head first into higher end collectibles like statues, props, etc. When I scan their gallery, I'm flipping through pages of statues and those over-priced giant dolls. When I finally hit the figures, here's what I see...

1. The Blackest Night: I'm always up for another Green Lantern wave and usually DCD can still deliver with these, but as is all too often the case, DCD seems intent on making GL waves full of all sorts of characters OTHER THAN GREEN LANTERN themselves!!! These aren't bad figures if you're interested in these characters. I saw them in person at NYCC. I'll probably get an Atrocitous, but that's probably it. I'm not that interested in the other characters and really put off by the grotesque over-done alien designs. Still no Arkillo, huh?

2. JLI: I've never been into these artist inspired lines. Even with DCUC aside, DCD has already given us superior less pre-posed versions of Booster Gold and Blue Beetle. As for that Martian Manhunter... Are they kidding?

3. History Of The DCU: This is the line that has me most interested. THe figures look great. Green Arrow and Aquaman are like Martian Manhunter and Captain Marvel in that they are characters DCD keep trying to make figures of over and over but never seem to get it just right. Captain Marvel finally got a good version in that incredible Shazam! wave. I hope this is a line that DCD will attack with the same enthusiasm they showed towards their Alex Ross and Ed McGuiness lines.
