Why is '77 star wars the High.

you cant argue with initial success and all the breakthroughs(artistic, technological, problematic) made to get it to the screen. And structuraly, A New Hope is a solid stand-alone film without having to remind us of its place in a larger, multifilm story arch. (Remember those days? when Hollywood didnt automatically sell things as a trilogies? A sarcastic 'thank you' to the Star Wars business model.)

Im only saying this in trying to dissect the film critic from the fan in me. I mean, Temple of Doom is my favorite Indy film, but I wont and cant argue that its a better film than Raiders.

Exactly, when you look at all the setbacks and struggles George went through to get the original star wars made it's hard not to think of it as the standard, heck it even makes me appreciate Geoge Lucas as a filmmaker and that's not an easy task considering the star wars saga as a whole. You also bring a valid point in the better film/favorite film argument, for example my favorite SW movie will always be ROTJ, ever since I was a kid are ANH and ESB better films? yes but it's still my personal favorite even though the Emperor's "best troops" got beaten by a bunch of killer teddy bears.

gross...people need to give up on those Mission Impossible movies...and Tom Cruise...

The original series is on Instant View on Netflix...enjoy!

Also...3D releases postponed. Duh. Feels like I was the only one bringing up the remaining 3d movies around the 'excitement' of the Disney deal...sigh...

William Shatner calls Abrams a pig for directing two movies.

http://www.giantfrea...-star-trek.html

What do you think? Personally, I think it's just Shat's humor and he's not really serious.

(Wouldn't it be great if I had a Star TREK forum to post this in?)

Star Wars is about to enter a new reality, I think. For a long time they were just three good movies that we all looked back on fondly. Remembering how great they were to watch as kids, and still great to watch now. They were very contained; three good movies, that's it.

For me, the desire for Star Wars to be more than those three movies had been minimal at best. I have no strong desire to watch Clone Wars or any other SW cartoon, no desire to read any of the novels or comics. The only thing I really need SW to be are those three movies from back in the day. But I know that's all going to change soon. Drastically.

Now we're talking one movie per year. Which, of course, translates into one marketing blitz per year. And I honestly think my need to see all these movies every year will be about as strong as my need to read all the comics and novels. What Star Wars IS, to me, has already been done and really can't be taken away whether these movies are good or bad (at one per year, were gonna get a lot of both). The original movies were special and always will be. Were not going to be able to say the same for the new stuff. But it is what it is and I can live with it. Even if every SW sucks from here on out, really it will all be OK because we've already gotten the best.

I feel the same way, for the most part, about the originals. But the new taints it more and more for me as time goes on. I cant stomach the "all SW is good SW" fans and their shunning of those who don't subscribe. The lightsaber drooling fantards turned me into a "used to like" SW fan. I cant help but try and talk sense to them about their blind love. Feels like im stuck in an eternally running Apple Jacks commercial (get it?). is a lil caution to the wind, a curb of the enthusiasm, too much to ask?

I was going to use that word "taint" but I forgot :) See, for me the originals really aren't tainted at all. We've arguably already got the worst we're going to get (Phantom Menace) and it doesn't affect my enjoyment. I put my blinders on when watching the OT, I don't think of them as being "attached" to other inferior movies, even though they technically are....it's actually really easy for me.

Yeah, there will always be lemmings who will think ANY SW is good SW, but that's their deal. I'm not gonna change their minds. I think those people are more interested in Star Wars the FRANCHISE. I'm interested in Star Wars the STORY. And really, at the heart of it, it's ONE story; farm boy meets his destiny. That story was told, told well, and can't be undone by any movie/merchandising blitz coming in the next 6 years.

I don't know if anything new can taint the originals for me. I love the originals.. they are still head and shoulders above anything else Star Wars for me.

However, the original 3 didn't cover EVERYTHING and there has always been room for more stories to be told in the Star Wars universe IMO. I think that there have been some great new additions to the Star Wars universe lore.. be it comics, cartoons, video games, or even some of the new trilogy.

I don't love all of it though.. for example, I loved the original Clone Wars series.. you know, the one that was made up of a bunch of short episodes with the ultra crazy Samurai Jack style. Those were awesome. The new Clone Wars series starring Anakin and Asohka is just alright for the most part. I have tried to watch it, but it doesn't draw me in like other SW stuff does.

the new trilogy didn't exactly reflect the originals as much as I hoped it would. But they are certainly enjoyable and I am glad that they were made. They did get better and better as they went on. I just think that for the most part Anakin was played badly.

I've enjoyed the prequels. I still do. I feel as if they're not as bad as most jaded fans like to make them out to be. They're not perfect however...I have my own nit-picks concerning them, but the original films weren't perfect either.

I'm excited about the coming sequels, and perhaps the stand-alone films, I won't deny it. But sometimes I worry the mythos as a whole may become a little cheapened or watered-down, if they don't handle it right. I guess I won't know for sure until I see the end-product. It may even make me sick of Star Wars, if that's even possible. (lol)

This article is interesting in that he thinks Disney is going to follow the Marvel Studios model with every new "Episode"=Avengers and all the stand alone character movies=Iron Man, Thor, Cap America, etc. and then gives Disney credit for "trying something new".

Ummmmm.....I think the FIRST person to do something gets the credit for the "new" idea, right? And when the second person sees that idea makes money and does the same thing, I believe they call that a "copy". But oh well....

not just the lemmings...I would love to wear an OT shirt every now and then without the common folk thinking "oh...one of THEM." It's a bit hard to express a singular part of something that has ballooned this big. Too many weeds in the flowerbed. How do you wear "your" Star Wars on your sleeve and make it clear what it means? Its pretty much impossible at this point without getting lumped into the "all" or "nothing" groups.

Really? You care what someone thinks of your shirt?

You and YoJoe are talking as though you guys are the only kind of "fans" that matter, but you have to understand that there are millions of SW fans out there. From all ages, some not even born yet, but could become fans when they are and grow up and thats what these movies are about. Keeping Star Wars alive for years to come.

If you're happy with the original trilogy and dont want to continue and read the hundreds of books and comics, videogames, etc... then fine, be happy with those and pretend the other movies dont exists, its that simple.

Just dont harp on people for wanting or enjoying something that you don't. Like someone said above, there's ton of story in the SW universe that is out there and infinite amount of stories yet to be told. Let people enjoy those and be happy with your betamax originals.

No, you misunderstand. I'm fine with anyone liking any SW they want.

Maybe it was my "lemmings" comment and I'm sorry if that was taken the wrong way. Maybe I could have said that better. I guess what I meant there was this franchise is going to grow and it's going to grow HUGE. That's going to make it harder for the "any SW is good SW" crowd to keep that mindset. You could be the most hard-core Spider-Man fan around, but even they would have a hard time saying "Any Spider-Man story is a good Spider-Man story" because there's just been soooooooooo much over the years. SW is going down that same path.

For me, the best SW story has been told and I'm at peace. But, certainly others can like and be excited for whatever they want. I am interested to see what Episode VII has in store....

Feat, if you have a SW T-shirt that you like, just wear it, man. Just wear it :)

enjoy the swim...

I wear it around the house, daily chores and relaxation...but im not taking it out any more to be lumped together with podraces and double lightsabers, and to have every Joe Average strike up a conversation with "Ya like Star Wars? Ya'know they're making a new one?" Ive gone thru the latter too much with Ghostbusters shirts and the on-again-off-again third rumors. Im not faulting anyone for being friendly, but again...it takes a lot of energy to explain diverging fandom to a grocery bagger in under 2 minutes

no, it was a civil way of saying what you really meant in accordance with the rules of this forum. I know several harsh negatives that would have fit the blank, but I try to follow the rules as well and enjoy posting in here from time to time. Good for you for trying to spare fragile feelings. You say the wrong thing and lemmings morph into a hornet's nest.
