Skystrikers or Conquest X30

I remember the Conquest X30 from the second season of GI JOE and those airplanes looked so futuristic that I just loved.

I find out in one of my father airplanes magazines that it was a real prototype that was never put into production by the air force but still is such a unique model that I preferred than the standard Sky Striker...

Got lots of love for both. I remember getting the Skystriker for Christmas (my younger brother got one too, but wasn't into Joe as much. So I got to play with both) and loving that thing. All those missiles and the two person cockpit. Loved Ace's helmet and the overall look of the figure and plane. Probably helped that I grew up in an Air Force city. But I remember buying the Conquest with my own allowance, like most of the Joe stuff I got that year. So there was that sense of pride in saving up and buying it myself. Plus it just looked so cool. So I guess it's a bit of a tie for me.

Seriously, I personally prefer the Conquest X-30. Why? Well, I always appreciated the Skystriker for its role as a realistic, early fighter jet for the Joes, but it's terribly dated. I really like everything about the X-30. To me the Joes were all about innovation when it came to showing-off new tech, and the Conquest just seemed like an exciting, revolutionary design for a next-gen fighter jet. I liked how it was smaller, more compact-looking, the forward-sweep wing design is visually striking, and I love the beastly face logos on the nosecone. It's just very dynamic-looking, very intimidating, well-armed, and it reminds me of the futuristic version of an old stunt plane or one of those old World War II Mustangs that flew in the Battle of Midway. I love it.

Before I give out my opinion, I should note that I'm basing this on the cartoons from the 1980's, as I never owned the toys when I was young. Also, for me when I pick up G.I. Joe vehicles for the Joes side at least, I usually pick up something that looks more fantastic/futuristic, screams "G.I. Joe", and/or comes with a cool character with some amazing accessories or features. If it's a generic/normal looking vehicle, I tend to want to pick up something that looks similar from a generic and cheaply 4" military line(Examples: The C.O.R.P.S., and the various Store Exclusive military lines like Toys R Us's True Heroes, Hasbro's Kid Connection, etc.), as they are of course cheaper than Hasbro's, and I'm okay to settle for certain generic looking vehicles(Even if Hasbro has a better quality). This isn't always the case, as I did back in 2013 pick up the Retaliation EagleHawk coptor for example, but that was because of the character included, and the features really made me realize it was worth it. Of course, it also depends on what is available in my area.

I would have to go with the Conquest X-30 for me. I like the look of it, and the fact that it had this shark like paint on it at the front of the nose of the jet. It also didn't look like a normal jet you would normally see. So to me, while the Skystriker looks like something any military can use, the Conquest looks like something only G.I. Joe would use. Plus, when I think of jets for the Joes, the Conquest is the 1st I think of, as it is also pretty much the only Joe jet I remember watching from the old cartoon series.

I got the Target/Zellers Exclusive Python Patrol version of the Conquest from the 25th Anniversary line, as that was the only version that Zellers brought over to Canada(At the time, Zellers, a Canadian store, was bringing over many of the Hasbro Targert Exclusive stuff). Haven't opened it yet(Along with a bunch of other stuff I've bought), but I know I'm going to love it when I do eventually. I picked it up, because I love the colours the Python Patrol version gave it.

I wouldn't mind if Hasbro re-released a Joe version of the Conquest down the road, maybe even do it in a different deco or theme. Like Night Force, Sky Patrol, Artic cameo(Which some fans have double as a Urban/City Cameo theme), Tiger Force, etc., if they wanted to make it different from the 25th Anniversary version. However, it's been since around 2008 that the Joe version of the Conquest came out, I guess it would alright if they decided to re-released it in it's standard colours.

Don't get me wrong, the Skystriker is really nice looking, and has some neat features(From the reviews I've read in both the original and the 30th Anniversary versions). Heck, I'd was tempted when the 30th Anniversary version came out. But at the same time, because it looks like a normal jet, there is a part of me that goes "Why don't I just buy a cheaply jet from a 4" line that looks similar if I want a normal/generic looking jet"(Again, even if Hasbro will have a better quality). I just think the Conquest is better in terms of looks, and is 1 I would more look forward to if I had to choose 1.

I was born a Skystriker man......ever since I laid my eyes on scores of Cartoon Joes ejecting out of them by the hundreds on my favorite cartoon, I just had to have them.....I was able to secure a used one at a garage sale & I re-enacted all my favorite bits......like the time Ace parachuted to safety after being shot down.....or that other time when Scarlet & Duke had to bail out due to Cobra related engine failure......& even that time when the Skystrikers were being refueled on the runway & Major Blood blew them all to high cartoon heck....yup goot times......I really did dig the Conquest when it came out....it was like a glimpse of the future especially w/the Serpentor-era characters.....like Sci-Fi, Lifeline you get the picture......but I'm Skystriker all they way....but I was hooked even more when "Top Gun" came out.....I was Maverick & Goose was my wingman & in my story he lives on forever......It's massive size was an homage to the "spend spend 80s" if GI Joes govt. had only sold more bonds, the Joes would have had an "Death Star" of their own to defeat Cobra....But the Skystriker wasn't w/out its drawbacks.....my much like most products made in America, its fins never wanted to stay on & it was always dropping its bombs & missiles every which way, civilian toy collateral be damned, the way the wings wouldn't spread open w/out the landing gear deploying was it major drawback......still I loved the design of the Skystriker & its still one of my favorites...#US1#
