Henry Cavill In The Superman "Man of Steel" Costume Revealed

But I would argue the very minor changes being made to the character in the movie, or comics for that matter, would have very little effect on the copyright ruling. Superman will still belong to the Siegle/Shusters no matter what he wears, or how he does his hair.

Yeah, people are bringing up the copyright issue a lot when it comes to this movie and his new look in the comics and I'm still not getting it. I'm no copyright expert but essentially, in both movie and comics, they're ditching the briefs and adding a few extra lines in the costume. That's it. You can still look at him and say, "That's Superman". So I don't get how this would be some way of DC dodging copyright issues.

Furthermore, the elements that are owned by the Schusters are apparantly still in play in the movie: Father Jor-El (Russle Crow), crashing to Earth, raised my humans. This is still a Superman origin.

Still, if control does go back to the Schusters in 2013, I'm gonna hold my breath and hope things don't get too F-ed up for one of my favorite heroes...

It is weird in a way, but the basic elements are there!! Sure no tights, but it's still Supes!! If the movie is good, and no super baby, then I'll overlook the costume!!

Question, will the classic theme song be opening up the film??

I see Warner/DC brokering a big fat-@$$ed deal with the estates, that leaves DC with their posterboy intact, and the families with a nice chunk o' change. Win, win.

Yes, I suppose this is likely. WB isn't exactly a small company and not having Supes would be a huge loose. Just a matter of how much they'll be paying.

Still, even in the worst case senerio, it's not like there aren't ways around this pesky copyright issue.

Just ask Jack Kirby:

Or Rob Liefeld:

I'm sure they will pay out the @$$ to keep and use him... let's face it, he really is the grandfather of ALL superheros

I never post here, but I've been reading this thread because I love Superman, and seeing him in movies simply thrills me to no end. I loved all four of the "Christopher Reeve" Superman movies, silly plot points and all. Those films were a big part of my childhood, and I've just always loved them. Superman is probably tied with Batman as my favorite superhero, although as an adult toy collector, I have yet to collect anything related to either character, amazingly enough. I have some comics, but that's about it. (Maybe I need to do something about that...)

I like what I'm seeing so far. Now I have to say that personally, and I may get alot of flak for this, but...I really enjoyed Superman Returns. It looked new and modern, yet there were just enough elements from the classic films to make it feel like the old movie Superman I've always known and loved. It was very heavy on story, and it did seem to focus more on Supes' relationship with Lois Lane, like it was more of a soap-opera than an action-filled Superman movie, but I still loved it. Having said that, I was very excited at the notion of a new reboot with a new director and actor in the title role.

And then, I saw the new pics. I love how he looks in that first pic, where he's holding back that vault door like he either ripped it opened or swiped it out of his way like it was made of aluminum foil. I loved the pose and the look on his face. It just clicked on every level for me. Then I saw the trunks-less pics. Hmm...okay. There have been times in the past that I thought Superman's trunks were a little out-dated, because wasn't his look inspired by the old-fashioned strongman characters seen in the old-timey circus shows and what-not? It's a very iconic look, but I'm quite okay with him losing the trunks. I'm open-minded enough to accept a drastic change as long as it makes sense to me. The new suit looks more like an alien battle/body suit. It looks other-worldly, dynamic, and interesting. In my mind, Superman needs to look like he came from another world, and this new costume reflects that. The only thing I might prefer is that there be some lines where the trunks used to be. Otherwise it looks too blank or plain without the trunks. There needs to be something there, no matter how miniscule, that breaks up all of the blue between his shoulders and chest where all of the red is and his boots, where there's more red. And the only other issue I might have is the muted/darker(?) colors; are they really muted and/or darker, or are we seeing him after a major battle? I ask that because in some pics the red of his costume looks bright, then in others it looks darker. The blue in his costume is fine with me. Actually I think it looks great. I prefer the brighter look because in my mind, Superman comes from a highly-advanced alien race, and so his costume should look slick and futuristic, not dark and dingy like he's chasing criminals in Gotham City. Could you imagine a darker, grittier Superman walking around in that bright and shiny Fortress of Solitude? Maybe they're gonna give him a "Cave of Solitude" to go with his darker suit. (lol)

Something else I can live without though is the "s"-curl. Yes, I know it's part of his iconic look, but c'mon...I just don't see superheroes taking the time to make sure their hair is perfect, styled even. (lol) If it's a natural curl like a coincidental cow-lick, then okay. But like I said I can live without it. Even if it may be natural, on some subconscious level you might think he took the time to get that spit-curl just right. (Geeze...I feel like I'm on an episode of Fashion Police.) (lol)

Bottom line, so far I really like what I'm seeing. I also like the notion that he's fighting Zod and Co. and not Luthor this time. I love Lex Luthor, but I prefer to see Supes duking it out with other powerful Kryptonians. I'm very excited and can't wait to see this movie.

you know the costume's grown on me a little bit there have been worse movie redesigns like Batman's nipple costume or Freddie Kruger missing part of his mouth and having black eyes or vampires being sparkly losers dancing around the woods.

As a huge Superman fan, I appreciate Cavill's dedication to the project. But for some reason I cant help but think of Chris Benoit, whenever I see Cavill's body frame and hands, during this movie...

I understand that the character of Superman has to look strong, but he shouldn't look like he's roided out either.... The way that hes been drawn in modern comics, he looks like he works out with Gregg Valentino... He so big now, that he no-longer looks "mild-mannered".... A guy who's frame is big enough to look like he could run through walls, is not "mild-mannered"--and will stand out in a crowd even in a business suit and glasses. One of the things that made the Golden through Modern Age Superman art so cool, is that you a had a guy of average fit shape and build, lifting a car over his head....or flying and smashing through walls. Its the awe of small things lifting up huge things, like small ants lifting things a lot larger than themselves.

That's why to me the best Superman artists of all time are Curt Swan and José Luis García-López (my all time favorite artist within all of comics, and medias). Even though Mr. García-López's Superman art started out depicting Superman in average fit physical shape, his modern Superman art later became bigger and a little more stocky in build. But Mr. Swan's Silver Age, Bronze Age, and Modern Age Superman, still remained in fit shape, but was never overtly ripped or big in frame. That captures the magic of the Superman shock and awe about his strength and abilities...because on average most people wont expect a mild-mannered looking man, to have the strength to be able to lift cars or smash through walls.

Aside from the great acting and portrayal, that's why Mr. Reeve's Superman will always be the best live-action representation of the character. His Superman was tall and in shape, but wasn't overtly ripped or looked like he could lift cars.... His Superman still maintained the "mild-mannered" look of the original comics, but could still use his huge strength when needed.

Nice, he doesn't look overly big to me, I remember when I use to weight left it was all about being big in all the right places , a dude like ultimate warrior would be to big, but this guy isn't to big and looks proportional. man I need to get back to that it's been like 8 years!!!! lol

To each his own I suppose, but to be honest Cavill isn't that huge. Chris Benoit was much more stockier than Cavill, more

like Wolverine's build than anything. Cavill is much more proportional. As much as I enjoyed Reeve's Superman he wasn't to

imposing as the Man of Steel which I believe is what many fans are hoping for with a modern interpretation of the

character. Also depending on what type of clothes he wears, its easy the hide Cavill's frame which as I've said isn't

astronomically roided out either. Build-wise, he's just right. I'm also hoping that Snyder doesn't give us a buffoonish

interpretation of Clark, I'd much prefer a more Animated Series interpretation of the character.

I just don't like the scruffy beard/extreme five o'clock shadow thing in those pictures of Clark, but I'm hoping that's part of the story.

Maybe it's part of the disguise. Of course a pair of glasses wouldn't fool anybody in real life, but a beard, well, that's a completely different story. @loll@
