I'm surprised this isn't posted (& would love more info from TNI if possible!). The significant news coming out of the panel is:

The Club was told that beginning at the start of the new year, Hasbro will be destroying most 3 3/4" ARAH o-ring molds in Asia due to age, rust and storage cost. *

WTF?? Seriously? Destroying the molds to figures & vehicles that are the WHOLE REASON we even have a Gijoe: Rise of Cobra movie today? This will cause a major sh!tstorm.

The reasons for destroying the molds are valid--its simply not worth the time or trouble to save/store old molds that cannot be used anymore. The reasons are plentiful: the molds can be of considerable size and weight, they can have wear and tear, and stuff like rust......well, that just increases the wear and tear.

Any little dings in the molds affect the casting of the parts........its not a simple matter to fix them. Honing off material to fix the dings means altering the tolerances of the molds, and thus the quality of the castings that come from it--usually meaning the parts will have mold-flash to them.

Its actually better to just discard the mold and create all new ones for the toys, BUT.......it means that the toys that are selected to be remade will depend upon the politics of the marketing team.

Keep in mind that some of what they are talking about may refer to molds for components of toys, not whole toys themselves--especially in regards to vehicles. For figures........yes, its likely that older figures will become "extinct"--unless a recreated mold is warranted.

This is just part of the on-going process of stream-lining operations and staying on top of the business--and its going to happen anyway.

I am all about that Big Lob figure........he's quite possibly one of the worst Joes ever (one of those "so bad they are great" things) but its still a shame we never really saw him in figure form until now.

I've been on the fence for a while now about the GI Joe club.......they have me now......could we maybe get a Pythona next year????



The fact they are destroying molds is sad in a way....but I mean I guess its what they have to do. It could drive up some figures value in the long run.

I understand not wanting to keep the molds but they could sell them as opposed to destroying them. I can think of a few classic figure molds I would love to buy to display with my classic joes.

I'm assuming you have the tens of thousands of dollars to pay for these molds?

Don't forget not only are the molds IN CHINA but they also are a) heavy and expensive as hell.

For some companies it's cheaper/safer to destroy than to sell.

Not to mention that the more likely buyers would just be pumping out knock offs. Why add to the knock offs.

It's sad, and yet at the same time it's clearly a good business move. Storage is expensive. With the new 25th style dominating, i don't blame them at all. Don't forget in some small way or another we customers pay for their old stuff to be stored.

Yeah when I heard this during the panel the reaction was a few miliseconds of disbelief and then what I would call muted despair.

Brian was pretty up front about it, but it is unclear what is a "small" number of molds that FP was able to request be saved.

Brian had said that it would be cheaper for Hasbro to make new molds rather than refurbish old molds.

These look nice. the exclusives are getting much better. Those that want them can get them but it isn't a "must have" if they had done REAL characters.

Alkthough it will suck if the Hydro-Viper mentioned is real.


As for the molds, oh well. Time to move on. I mean, did we REALLY expect them to go back to that style? Honestly. The only consideration, with that, is vehicles since most RAH vehicles will work with the 25th style bodies still. I'd hope they would take that into consideration.

Well I don't think I phrased that right.

First of all, it means we WON'T ever get a character named "Hydro-Viper" in the "main line". That sucks.

But if the figure actually LOOKS like a Hydro-Viper (as opposed to just a red Eel) that would suck even more.
