2008 Wave 12

I am all for GI Joe being around for another 25 years but I don't even want to think about how old I'll be in 25 years.

I am all for each of us having our own opinions but what gets to me is when people start going on about how dumb Hasbro is for making something stupid when there are plenty of people who think the stuff is not stupid. How is it dumb to make something that is wanted. I just like to remind others that they need to look at the bigger picture and not just theirs. Even I do not like everything or get everything but I respect that others might want what I don't. Alot of this complainong I think still comes from that old worry that this is the end forever and some figures are going to be left out and never be made and instead worthless repaints are on the way.

I'm not worried at all. I think the line will continue and get bigger. It looks like it is more successful than JVC ever was. Before stores stopped carrying the line and now more and more shelf space is being given to this one. I think there are more of us that like this line than there are that do not. It was more of the other way around with JVC.

What I am saying is that tooling are not expensive- 22,000.00 for a fully articulated figure (same as old school joes) and still We make repaints? Really... it does not cost that much to produce the figures. In all fairness, If ppl knew half of the numbers they would feel kinda of ripped off. I, as a fan am one of the ppl who WAHHHHHh so ppl can have short sleeves on Flint. Lets just say some ppl are just sheep and follow, while others try to make a diffrence. Hopefully whoever is the one who is talking about ppl complaining and WAHHHHing if a follower. The reson why we like the new figures is because they are New ...not repaints. And by the way it takes time to develope even repaints, This has been planed for a year now..trust me. Get a Job at Hasbro and then tell me its because they listen to anyone? lol Silly rabbit tricks are for kids and repaints are for sheep. LOL This not to say that proper colors on repaints are bad. Its to say that other than the fact the Artic snowserpant pack will not sell as well now with ppl knowing that the Scarp Iron is coming out in the two pack. That is a fact. So you know Im on the up about what I am talking about. Wait till you see Golobulus...Hes sweet but will he be a repaint??? lol Pythona is sweet as well.... Little bit of info. M.A.S.K. figures 3 3/4 as well sweet but repaints as well.... I am trying to say something which is that ppl who work in the industry like what they do but hate to see the product detroyed by ppl who do not collect.

on the flip side of what KamenDreda is saying....

What if the Joe team designers aren't "listening" to us to make us "happy"... what if they are actually making the changes we want just to sell another figure to us that we shouldn't have to buy??

Say with Flint... they aren't dumb, they knew that we all want short sleeves before they even released wave 1. Now, what if they say, "Hey, if we change those sleeves to short ones, we will sell another figure.. and instead of having to make an entirely new figure, we just have to make some arms."

Or, "hey, remember when we messed up and gave stalker a diaper crotch.. well now we will give him a regular crotch! BINGO BANGO baby! Just sold an extra figure and all we had to do was modify a crotch instead of molding a brand new figure.... that'll make the suits upstairs happy."

LOL

Well to be honest, I've sort of wondered about this. Some of those figures are surely just mistakes on Hasbro's part. I don't think they botched Flint on purpose. But it's a little suspicious when they continuously make obvious mistakes only to sell corrected versions a few waves later. For example, producing SE in grey when they must know that everyone is going to want him in black, or as we see in this wave, finally giving the cobra trooper a red sigal when they gave the original a silver one. I suspect that in at least a few of these instances they knew what they were doing.

Hasbro has become the downfall of the entire toy market. They ruined Marvel Legends which created a domino effect. All Hasbro cares about is capitalizeing on a good product and than sucking it dry. They bought out Marvel Legends and than took away paint apps, articulation, comic books, new characters and our ability to continue collecting MOC due to their idiotic packaging. And than to add insult to injury they charge more $$MONEY$$ for an inferior product. The same goes with the Gijoes only they already owned the liscense. The Gijoes started off great! they were affordable, collectible and available. But as soon as Hasbro seen some success from the line what do they do?...they #$## it up as usual. As soon as Gijoe gained some momentum the #$## ups at Hasbro ruin another line yet again by reusing molds, producing pointless variations, changing/cheapening the packaging and than charging yet again more @##@@ $$MONEY$$ for an inferior product. Its really become sickening that they feel as though they can charge more money just because the line has become successful. I understand the concept of supply and demand but what Hasbro fails to realize is that the demand only comes from affordable products, if people cant afford it than they wont...hell CANT buy it. So the only one losing in the end is Hasbro. That is until they destroy another company (TOYBIZ) so they can steel all of they're successful toy lines and then run them into the ground to.

I love Hasbro. I can't believe that it's 2008 and I'm actually looking forward to getting a new freakin' Tiger Force Duke! Their Transformers get cooler every year with stuff like the Movie toys and the new Universe Classics. I also like having many of my childhood heroes in the same scale and look forward to the upcoming Fury Files line of Marvel characters. If it wasn't for the cool stuff coming out from Mattel (DCUC and MOTUC) and Fisher-Price (for my 5 mo. old son), I'd have a strictly Hasbro-only household.

I passed on the Comic Pack so I'm really looking forward to that single-card Trip-Wire, an awesome character that I only happened to discover after picking up his lackluster TF repaint in '88. He looks good and I'm glad he doesn't have a totally random re-deco.

I don't know about the Red Diver but since I plan to get all the DVD packs anyways I could use the element. Python Patrol figures only look good together as a complete unit, otherwise you've just got a couple of random guys in yellow suits and I never got a Python Officer. And I'm sure that the Stormshadow will make some kid very happy.

I agree about the red diver, I don't know about it either. With the Eels coming he just looks out of place. Yet I will still buy this figure because I want the element he comes with. I really am excited to finally have a Mass Devise toy, even if I am buying it piece by piece.

Ripper looks pretty good. He's alittle different from the comic pack. I'm not too crazy about the extra long cord. He's gonna get all tangled up trying to pry open Lady Jaye's legs. LOL. Sorry, not funny. What's the deal with all the elements these figures come with? I don't remember seeing guys walking around with jars of koolaid in the cartoon. My memory must be getting rusty. I better start drinking some of my homemade element.

LOL

Eh... I see Hasbro in two different camps. The first being the corporate suits (that are sitting around reading reports about profit and loss) and the designers. From meeting the designers, I can tell you they are big ol geeks like us. Granted they are not all hard core GI Joe afficinados like us but they are all toy lovers. Granted this is just a job to them but its a job they love (from what I could tell). They may not be Joe experts but they understand the collector mentality and what we want as collectors.

When it comes to correcting mistakes like fixing articulation and paint scheemes, I think the designers are doing it for us... because theywant us to be happy (because THEY would want a corrected version of their favorite toys if it were jacked up the first time around). They WANT us to have that perfect version of that figure because that is what THEY would want.

I have to believe that at some point there is a meeting somewhere at hasbro where the designers are talking to their bosses and this is brought up. I'm sure it would go something like this:

Designer: I think we need to fix "Problem A" on "Figure X".

Suit: Why? It looks fine to me

D: The collectors have said they are not happy with it.

S: Havent they already bought this figure?

D: Yep

S: Will they buy it again if we put out a corrected version?

D: Probably

S: Then we'll end up selling two of the same figure to one person?

D: Yep

S: (ala Mr Burns) Excellent! Bwahahaha

Designer walks out of room

D: (under his breath) I hate my boss

The thing with Flint... and all of the wave one singles... They were an after thought. From what I understand, the five packs were ment to be a one shot deal. That was all they had planned. Wave one had to be put out quickly because the fan reactions to the first 2 5 packs was so over whelming. I think everyone forgets that this whole 25th anniversery phenomina was completly unexpected. Flint has duke arms because there wasn't enough time to do him properly. It wasn't like they were thinking they could always redo him later with better arms to make us buy him again.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I'll collect the whole set.

Wave 12? I like it. Mostly because I have bought the Tripwire, I didn't army build the silver logos and I don't have any particular love (or need to buy) the rest. As long as there's at least one figure that I want to buy, I'm fairly happy.

Again you are replying to something that has nothing to do with what was said by who you are quoting. I am not even sure what your points are if any other than you feel the need to push that you are "in the business" and don't approve of how the business operates and we should stop accepting what is made because we don't know what happens behind the scenes. Try to not jump around talking about a dozen things in one paragraph. It will make comprehending what the hell you are trying to say alot easier.

I for one do not appreciate being called a sheep because I buy something I like. I buy what I like because I like it and it has nothing to do with which company makes it. I guess if that makes me a sheep then the majotiy of us have been sheep since the 80's because many of us have alot of toys and have put alot of money into our hobby because we liked what we got and got what we liked. Not because we were Hasbro's sheep.

I already ordered two arctic packs, primarily for the Snow Serpents so whatever you are basing your facts off of seems to just be your opinion and not the opinion of everyone. I don't recall many people saying they were getting that just because of Scra Iron. We already knew a more accurate one was on the way in a comic pack when we saw that one.

Actually, those kind of numbers are available to anyone willing to put a little effort into finding them. I've found them for many of the products I buy. I don't feel ripped off. It's called 'capitalism in action'. It's not the best system, but it's the one we've got, and it's the one I support, largely by buying things at several hundred times markup of the manufacturing cost with my hard-earned money.

Lets just say some ppl are just sheep and follow, while others try to make a diffrence. Hopefully whoever is the one who is talking about ppl complaining and WAHHHHing if a follower. The reson why we like the new figures is because they are New ...not repaints.

Actually, there are plenty of repaints I like. I accepted a long time ago that the line was making roughly 75% of the figures out of reused molds and repaints. To a large extent, I'm okay with that. Yeah, sure, of course I'd like it to be different, but even with things the way they are, I've bought tons of figures that I wanted and enjoy. The ones I didn't, I left for someone else. If accepting the faults of the line and buying the figures I want makes me a sheep, then BAA!

And by the way it takes time to develope even repaints, This has been planed for a year now..trust me. Get a Job at Hasbro and then tell me its because they listen to anyone? lol Silly rabbit tricks are for kids and repaints are for sheep.

Well, I'd be quite upset to find out that they just threw this wave together last week, repaints or no. It's not even a terrible lineup, all things considered. Every figure I'm not interested in, someone else has shown interest in, and vice-versa. The only people who are really, truly upset about things like this are those who slavishly buy every figure of every wave, and while I'm sure Hasbro would like all the collectors to be like that, I seriously doubt they put the waves together with that in mind.

LOL This not to say that proper colors on repaints are bad. Its to say that other than the fact the Artic snowserpant pack will not sell as well now with ppl knowing that the Scarp Iron is coming out in the two pack. That is a fact.

Actually, we knew there was a regular Scrap-Iron coming, because someone asked about it when the Arctic set was revealed, and Hasbro told them. It was discussed in the threads about the Arctic set, among other places. So pretty much everyone who's been ordering the set has been doing so knowing full well that there was another SI on the way. Has that affected sales? Possibly, but it's really hard to tell since there's no control/variable to compare here. Personally, I find it hard to believe that one figure in a seven-figure set really made or broke it for anyone. The six troop builders in that set couldn't have anything to do with the reason people are buying it anyway, I'm sure...

So you know Im on the up about what I am talking about.

No I don't. I see you spouting a bunch of nonsense, like you normally do. If making a nonsensical rant is proof of you being 'on the up', then yeah, rock on. I never realized the standards were so low.

Wait till you see Golobulus...Hes sweet but will he be a repaint??? lol Pythona is sweet as well.... Little bit of info.

Sure it is. Like anyone who is paying any attention at all couldn't guess that with one Cobra-La out there, we might get a few more. And given that it's a short list of three possible characters...

M.A.S.K. figures 3 3/4 as well sweet but repaints as well....

GOOD. I've been saying they should go that route since they first mentioned doing Matt Trakker. Hasbro has a few decades worth of Joe molds gathering moss, and I fully support using them to make a new MASK line. With the increased size and articulation over the old MASK figures, there's a lot more they can do with the vehicles. Heck, there's a few Joe vehicles that could be a part of the line with little to no work put in. Even better, any original vehicles (it is, at it's heart, a vehicle-based line) will be bigger than the originals. These thoughts make me all kinds of happy.

I am trying to say something which is that ppl who work in the industry like what they do but hate to see the product detroyed by ppl who do not collect.

I would love for you to tell me where you even TRIED to say that.

How dare you question him, you sheep! He knows what you want! He knows how Hasbro works! He is on the up! He's IN THE INDUSTRY!

Hey Blackmada,

You bring up some very valid points. Thanks for giving me another prospective to contemplate. It is very hard to separate personal feelings from hard factual truths when you care about something like many of us do.

I like the opinions of everyone of this forum agree or disagree. It shows that they have a passion, love it or hate it. Let me ask you ... what would make it more Love than dislike? Your feedback is very helpful.

I would not change much.

One thing I would rather see is entire waves just for animated style figures. Like the Cobra Flint and cartoon Ripper. Keep every four waves repaint waves for guys like TF, PP and things like that and have maybe every second wave be just for the cartoon. That would leave the other two, first and third waves for new sculpts, new characters or mostly new sculpts.

The other change would be stop putting army builders in the two packs. The IG could easily go into the every four wave repaint wave since it was made mostly or reused parts.

Other than that I'd like to see wiser body part choices in the future. Falcon and Leatherneck could have been better than they are. They showed they can do Major Bludd better but get them better from the start from now on.

  • 3 weeks later...

Update: I didn't think this deserved it's own thread, but turns out Wave 12 isn't going to give us yet another Stormshadow but a somewhat retro army builder. Anybody remember the old early '90s mail-away forms that sold a blue Stormy and called him the Ninja Viper (if memory serves you could also send for a Quick Kick and Jinx 2-pack as well)? Looks like he's back to chuck shuriken at TFU Starduster! See for yourselves here.

Looks SWEET! A little lacking on the paint detail, but if it really bothers me I can fix that myself. I applaud Hasbro for swapping out the accessories, and even better, for not just casting the Red Ninja or V1 SS in blue and calling a day. The hood doesn't make it just like the original, but it also ensures that it's not just like all the others we already have.

I'm still a bit annoyed that it's not a Ninja Force SS... but pick your battles, you know?
