Star Trek 3

Welp, they've been threatening to force feed William Shatner into the Star trek relaunch ever since 2009 and now it looks like it's going to happen with Star Trek 3. I'm not one to bash something before I've seen it, but I have to say I can see no story based reason why this would have to happen. Maybe if New Kirk meets his future self? Sure, I guess. But you know the only reason this would be done is so that Shatner can reprise HIS roll...HIS Kirk. And unfortunately, Shatner is now 20 years older than his Kirk ever lived to be.....in another time line.

I thought Old Spock's appearance in Into Darkness was completely forced, fanboy pandering. This one has the potential to top even that. I'm fine with tickling the fanboy's nostalgia bone every once in a while, but don't bend over backwards and sacrifice all logic to do it. Oh well, hopefully I'm fretting about nothing and they have a clever slant to it that I'm just not seeing. We'll see...

Now before featofstrength interjects with another "See, I told you, Robert Orci SUCKS!" reminder, I have to say I like what I'm hearing about the crew picking things up deep into their five year mission and about them staying more true to the original series. You can give me my dose of nostalgia THAT way, not through casting gimmicks.

I had heard it wa a scens where Kirk and Spock were talking and Spock reminices this to his younger self

Yeah but still, anything involving a flashback with Kirk "Prime" is going to show a William Shater who is much older than Kirk ever lived to be.

Remember the bad last episode of Enterprise where Riker and Troi show up out of nowhere (did I mention pandering before?) and pretend they were still on season 7 TNG? Only they were obviously older, greyer, and more out of shape than they were 10 years previously? I imagine the Shater cameo to be more along those lines. Only instead of 10 years, we'll be talking 20+.

Maybe they will do away with his whole dying in Generations thing?

I hated the end of Generations for doing that.....if that was Shat's attempt at making his appearances final in the ST series then he can't be too mad at them not including him in the current reboots....I don't know how I feel about a cameo or role in ST3....as long as it's not super cheesy & wig-tastic

Not sure I want this to happen... they don't need to add him in. I guess it would be cool but it's not necessary really. @hmmm@

It's not at all necessary for story value. No matter which way you slice it, Shatner himself is older than Kirk ever lived to be. The one and only reason they would bring back that Kirk is for the nostalgia, it's just not necessary, and I can't imagine it not being forced and obvious. My advice to the new movies would be to stop kicking around this possibility every time you do a new film, worry about telling your own stories, and don't do anymore shoehorned women's bra shots like you did in Into Darkness.

You know, if Shatner's in good-enough physical shape, they may go the CGI route to "youthen" him up so to speak (I just invented that word BTW) (lol), like they did with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen at the beginning of X-Men: The Last Stand. I can't be sure, but I think they did the same thing in the recent Hobbit films with Ian Holmes and Christopher Lee; they looked liked they had been digitally spiffed-up just a smidge.

I think they are doing it to make Shatner happy, but they still have no reason to add him, no matter what they do. @grumpy@
