Visionaries

Recommended Posts

One of the best short cartoons from the 80s. Visionaries with very interesting plots at each episode and cool designed action figures.

I would like to see a Kick starter for the Visionaries (The castle that was never made "The Iron Mountain" and the catalog full of new figures that never came to life.

I would defiantly backed it up and I know there are thousands of 80s fans that would do too. Just take a look at how Jem figures are today with new designs for collectors?

I'd be down. I only had two of these (one for me, one for my brother) when I was a kid but I remember liking that they had GI Joe articulation but were larger in scale.

FLASHBACK REVIEW: VISIONARIES

By Thomas Wheeler

Welcome to the planet Prysmos! A world with three suns, which recently aligned for the first time in millennia, and inexplicably caused all advanced technology to stop working. Society was plunged into a feudal, medieval-like state.

Both noble and evil knights battled to govern or rule their respective regions on the planet, and ultimately, the mysterious wizard Merklynn appeared, promising great magical power to those who could enter his sanctuary on top of Iron Mountain.

Only a handful managed to accomplish this. The chestplates of their armors were gifted with the symbols of animals, which the knights could transform into at will. Those carrying battle staffs were given additional powers. Those without staffs later found they had the ability to make special vehicles operate.

Merklynn dubbed these knights -- THE VISIONARIES!

The Visionaries were a sadly short-lived toy concept in 1987, produced by Hasbro. Really, it was a very well-made toy. The figures used the same construction methods as G.I.Joe, although they were slightly taller, about 4-1/2 inches, rather than 3-3/4". But apart from that, all the basic design elements were virtually identical. The armor on the figures was highly ornate and very well detailed without exception.

The Visionaries were divided into two groups - The heroic Spectral Knights, led by Leoric, and the evil Darkling Lords, led by Darkstorm. The best way to tell the difference was that the Spectral Knights' chestplates and weapons were silver in color, the Darkling Lords' were gold.

Ohh, I loved the Visionaries...they still seem so new and surreal to me to this day. After what seemed like decades of your standard issue Joes, Hasbro suddenly and inexplicably dropped these on us, and I was so fascinated with a larger figure that sported the same articulation as my beloved G.I. Joe figures. I even loved the comic series, although I only owned the first issue, and strangely enough I only owned one figure, and it was Darkstorm. I didn't even have any of the heroes of the line. (lol)

Some funny and/or interesting observations I made concerning them at the time included the fact that I always felt Darkstorm looked like Alan Rickman, the guy that played Hans Gruber in the original Die Hard, and of course Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films. Maybe he was an inspiration for the character, I don't know...

I also noted that some of the characters sported some familiar paint schemes that I liked. For example, I always thought Cryotek's colors were reminiscent of Optimus Prime, and Witterquick always reminded me of the original Matt Trakker of M.A.S.K. that came with the Thunderhawk Camaro/jet-thingy.

I loved them. I'd be all for a revival, if they were done right, that is.

I had a few of these guys as a lad.....my moms picked me up a few atta garage sale....(when she would find me some cool stuff at a g-sale, she would say "here's what I found you but they had so many more I didn't know what to get, I didn't think you would like them".....& then my spoiled as$ would think to myself "do I ever not like toys?.....cmon mahhhm...I woulda loved them all").....anewayys she bought me like 6 figs & a vehicle....they still had most of their accessories & I thought they were F-ing cooolll....I had some weird back story that they were connected to the battle beasts cause of their stickers on their chests so occasionally they would have to battle some battle beasts....haha.....like fighting off super powered ewoks....I had a crapload of BattleBeasts cause I made some good trades for some of my broken as$ Transformers....I really dug the GI joe-like articulation so I would make up stories where a handful of Joes & Cobras got transported to the past (just like the cartoons) & their equipment would fail, like the awestrikers & rattler lost power so they would hand to hand combat the hell out of each others....till the Visionaries showed up & started wuppin everyone's plastic butts....the Joes would be overpowered of course except the ninjas who could beat anything anywhere anytime.....& Cobra would side w/the visionaries to help them defeat the joes....what I liked about the V's is they were slightly bigger than the Joes so the Joes really had to work at defeating them (the Joes defeated the V's by taking their power staffs away & then had to remove their chestplates, then they could beat the renaissance out of them) plus the V's had magic & shiii so that made my Joes even more of an underdog.....but in the end what was left of my Joes beat down the Cobra/V's team....I dug the V's weapons & was even able to use some of my Transformers weapons to upgrade their badas$ery......I would probably scoop up a few of these if they hit retail shelves again....Kickstarter would prolly be more than I would want to pay for one fig....I tried to use bigger guns on some of my Visionaries & then eventually the plastic thumbs would break.....I guess the owed the toy gods moneys......great figs good memories.....a toy line that was gone all too sooon

The Visionaries line was an original concept that was gratefully translated into the toy design.

We seen other great stories and original ideas like Inhumanoids that lost accuracy in the design aspects of the toys.

For the Visionaries line I would like to see a continuation (Figures that were not made in plastic or released at all to the public) of the line and NOT a starting from ZERO line. That would make compatible with the originals and then they can start releasing some of the originals on a 3 months exclusive kind of deal.
