GIJoe Fans, Make your voice heard

As you likely know, it was announced this past Summer that the GIJoe comic book license would be up for grabs soon. The GIJoe Comic Book has alway been an essential part of the GIJoe mythos, so I think it goes without saying that whoever gets it, they will be getting something that many of us hold near and dear to our hearts as Joe fans. It's my feeling that these boards house one of the largest populations of Joe fans on the internet, and so we would really like to hear your opinions on who gets the license. The two most rumored choices are Marvel Comics which was the orginal company to hold the license in the 80's and IDW who currently hold the license for Hasbro's other big toy property Transformers. What I am asking is that each of you head over to CNI, our official comic book news website and cast your vote for which of these two companies you would like to see take over the GIJoe license. The poll is on the main page at http://www.Comicnewsi.com

Also please share your thoughts in this thread about the GIJoe Comic, past, present and future. I will be passing a link to this thread to Hasbro and several of the comic companies involved just so they can see what you think along with the results of the CNI poll which we will run for a few days, in case they are interested. So speak out now or forever hold your peace.

It's hard to say. I personally don't have found memories of the final years of Marvel's run on the book. That being said I have never gotten into the IDW titles much either. Their issues of Transformers I have read were somewhat boring. Which ever company gets it, I think they will have a lot of work to do to bring GIJoe fans back to the comic because I think DDP drove most of them far far away from it.

MAKE MINE MARVEL !!! I'd prefer they take back the reigns of the G.I. Joe comics, as long as they have Larry Hama as the writer, and Joe Quesada doesn't turn any of the Joes/Cobras into Skrulls (Skrull-Vipers ??? Snake-Eyes makes a deal with Mephisto to raise his sister from the dead, but erases his entire relationship with Scarlett ???). His first name might be "Joe", but he needs to have as little to do with the series as his position in the company allows.

For the artist, I'd go with either Steve Epting, Simone Bianchi, David Finch, Frank Cho, or John Cassaday.

Marvel's run on G.I. Joe, in the `80's, is what got me into comics, with most of the titles I read being Marvel.

I'm not impressed with IDW.

I would strongly prefer for Hasbro to continue to work with Devil's Due to keep the comic series going. They have done a magnificent job. Yet, if it has to be a new company, IDW would seem to be the best choice. They really have grabbed my attention with their spectacular work with the Transformers. Very dark, and very intense. In other words, it is great for the fans who have grown I would trust the G.I. Joe name to them over other companies aside from DD.

I may be in the minority here but I liked MOST of the Devils Due Gi joe. I am going to be sad to seem them lose the license, I like all of the characters they created, firewall, blackout, General rey, and especially kamakura. I liked how they kept the old marvel line stories as part of the canon. I would hate to see someone take over now and throw all of that away. I think while brandon Jerwa was involved in the series it was great. I may not appreciate some of thee artists they have used on it. but I still liked the stories. That being said I did not like the Reloaded series. number one reason. IT RESET THE CANON. it changed to much. I would prefer that IDW gets it simpley because they have the transformers one and are doing a good job with it. but I really dont care who gets it as long as they dont mess with the canon. I like where the story has gone, please dont throw the DD canon away.

I was a latecomer on Marvel's G.I. Joe. I started reading somewhere around the 120s, and continued until the series end. I remember #126 had the secret origins of Firefly and featured a lot of Ninja Force. Awesome issue.

Some of those issues were really good! Others were terrible, with terrible art. Andrew Wildman did some great work, and when Phil Gosier took over I didn't complain. However, the fill-ins were quite... ehhh. The Transformers tie-in was weak, too.

That said, I voted for Marvel to get the license. I'm sure IDW is a capable company, but Marvel has the distribution power, and with such a high-end property these days, Marvel would bring top-shelf talent to the book.

John Cassady, Ron Garney, Stefano Caselli, Lee Weeks, Mike Perkins, Sean Chen... any of these guys would do wonders on art chores.

I'd prefer they take back the reigns of the G.I. Joe comics, as long as they have Larry Hama as the writer

I find that to be a funny qualifier. What if Larry Hama is in a place where he has no interest in doing a monthly comic with such strict editorial restraints (coming from both Marvel's people, and Hasbro). What if you took Larry out of the equation? What exactly has Marvel done for GIJoe that wasn't a direct result of Larry Hama's control over the book. Two transformers crossovers? Marvel mandates. Issues 8, 9, 119, 153, and 154... also "Ladies Day" from the Special Missions run. Every non-Hama issue of Marvel's run seemed to stink on dry ice.

So exactly what is Marvel bringing to the table if they don't serve up Hama-chops? I'm not saying Marvel's evil, or a bad choice if Hasbro goes that way. But to say "Make Mine Marvel... if Hama's writing it!" seems a little misguided. Sounds more like you want Larry Hama back, moreso than caring which company gets the book. What if Marvel got the license, then said "We're gonna let Jeph Loeb write it. He's been wanting to do a book about a mute ninja." What if IDW gets the license, and says Larry turned down the offer? At some point, we're gonna have to learn to like GIJoe for GIJoe's sake, and not because one guy is writing it.

Granted, I'll always love the Marvel run (save the issues above), and Larry Hama is still one of my favorite writers, and is a huge inspiration to me as an aspiring writer. But it is not impossible to have a good GIJoe story without him. Someday, I kinda hope I'll be allowed to write one. Maybe even two!

For my money, I don't think Marvel would give GIJoe a fair shake today like they did in 1982. IDW seems to have found the magic with Transformers doing a main continuity, reprints, alternate universes, and lots of little extras. With even half those options working for GIJoe, I'd be pretty happy.

I voted IDW, and if the scuttlebut around the net is accurate, we're gonna see it go that way.

Look at the quality of Marvel's books from the 80s to early 90s, then compare it with the quality of the books now. It's a different company. And I totally agree, the non-Hama issues were complete garbage, but the fanbase isn't in a position to take that crap laying down these days.

We have the internet.

True, whoever gets G.I. Joe, I want them to have Hama writing. However, it's like umanumanamo said, Marvel has more resources and better distribution capabilites. Plus, they have better artist to work on the comic.

If Marvel gets G.I. Joe but they can't land Hama, God forbid, then I'd want Ed Brubaker writing.

Here is another question I would be interested in hearing opinions on. Regardless of what company gets it, would you want them to continue on from the DDP stories which continued from the orgingal Marvel series, or would you prefer that they start over from scratch?

For monthly comics, yes, but with last year's hype for the TF movie, IDW was able to create some strong inroads with their tradepaperback offerings at book stores. Realistically, the monthly comic is largely dead outside of the big two and Star Wars. But trades are something more bookstores and retail outlets would be willing to carry, and IDW does have a solid working relationship with such after Transformers.

Straight Edge covered most of my thoughts. I really don't see Marvel bringing anything to the table. Hell, even Larry Hama hasn't done much for Marvel over the past few years, so expecting him to be Marvel's first pick is absurd. My view is that the only reason Marvel may even be interested in the property is more about the moeny than any desire for the property itself.

All said and done, I think IDW is the best pick as evidenced by Transformers, where they've satisfied fan desires and even worked on some nifty side projects THAT HAVE BEEN FAIRLY SUCCESSFUL. It took DDP how long to do the Declassified series? And you can't forget the mess over Reloaded.

I would want them to continue! The current DDP stuff ain't bad. Plus, how many times has it been restarted? That kinda thing can get old.

They'll have to make it accessible to new readers, of course, but they won't have to sacrifice continuity either. It can be done, even at Marvel (lol).

I prefer a from scratch approach. Let's be realistic, the continuity that has been created between Marvel and DDP is SO convoluted, with so many set in stone events, I really don't feel it is fair for any new publisher to be stuck with someone else's poor decisions. Do half of the villians NEED to be connected with Snake Eyes?

I think a page needs to be taken from IDW's Transformers book: Let a writer with a passion for Joe cherry pick what they want from ALL incarnations of Joe and run with it. Let's see new ideas, not trying to work around someone else's. There are more solid Joe writers than just the almighty Hama, so let's see someone else take a stab with the franchise.

Outside of side lines like Reloaded, vs TF, or Sigma Six? How about NONE

Outside of Extreme (and the above side projects), for the past 25 years, GI Joe comics have basically ran on the SAME continuity. All said and done, the closest we've seen to a hard reboot of GI Joe has been Sigma Six, but the original comic was still running.

I voted for Marvel comics for two reasons, one of which is just a personal thing for me. For one, Marvel seems to be at the top of their game lately. I can't say alot about IDW since I'm not familiar with them, which leads to my personal reason for voting for Marvel; I'm a sentimental kind of guy. I have alot of fond memories of the old Marvel series, and for me right now G.I. Joe is all about memories for me in the midst of the 25th Anniversary. I might get excited about new concepts when the movie stuff really gears-up. But for me right now I'm having fun reminiscing with G.I. Joe, and what better way than to see G.I. Joe go back to its comic book home. But then there's the probability that it will be all-new stories in the present and not necessarily a re-visit like Frontlines seemed to be. Either way I'd like to see Marvel get the license back. And I'd LOVE to see either Jim Lee or George Perez or BOTH in some capacity take up art chores on G.I. Joe. That's the dream...

I could care less who gets it... but I do think that whoever it end's up with needs to completly reboot the continunity... Please don't try to hold on to the history that has already been established. It's not worth it.

Those who forget established history are doomed to reboot it.

If Marvel got G.I. Joe I would be fine with it if they either continued DDP's continuity, or just pick up where the original Marvel run left off. If IDW takes it, they should pick up where DDP left off. Though, if whoever gets it picks up where DDP left off I still hate the death of Lady-Jaye.

I don't think anyone, Marvel, IDW or whoever, could pull off a full reboot very well. Hama might be able to pull it off, if anyone could, but I don't know. Most reboots change aspects of characters, and the like, so much that I can't relate. Reboots usually defile what I've come to know and love about comics, movies and such, causing me to turn away from the new, desecrated incarnation. The extent of any reboot I would accept is if they only change the time and places the stories are set in. They should not change any physical or psychological aspects of characters. They shouldn't change any established relationships between characters.

Old continuity, new continuity...it really doesn't matter. As long as it's done well is the thing. The DDP stuff never really caught my interest. America's Elite had great artwork, but...the story left me wanting more, what I read of it. Maybe I've just not read enough, but the new stuff just doesn't capture my interest. I really liked that new "silent issue" that had Kamakura, Cobra Commander, Storm Shadow, and Snake-Eyes, but I think that's only because Mike Zeck did the artwork.

It's really not fair; I guess I should give the newer stuff a chance. I've bought a bunch of Joe books over the past several years, but I've not made myself sit down and actuallyread all of them, so I really shouldn't judge the new stuff as a whole. It's just the place I'm at right now personally; I want to see the classic characters right back in the old days, in the midst of the Reagan-era-Cold-War-80s again, nice and gritty done by either Jim Lee or George Perez. Michael Golden would be even better, but I'm not even sure he does comic work anymore. I'm stuck in the 80s right now. I can't help it... (lol)

I think picking up where the Marvel continuity left off would be an insult to those who worked on the Devil's Due books. I think it would probably be simpler to just continue the book from the Marvel/Devil's Due continuity. If they were to restart it from scratch I feel we would just end up having to sit through the Serpentor Saga, the Snake-Eyes/Storm Shadow Drama, etc. all over again. I'd much rather see some original stories. Besides we don't need a "Crisis On Infinite Joes". It's confusing enough with the comic/cartoon differences.

I want to see it stay with DDP, if for no other reason than it will always be their #1 priority. Marvel has to many other things to worry about and if you want to see how they handle a licensed book just look at how they're doing with Halo. IDW might not be bad, but again they have Angel, 24, TF, Star Trek and whatever else and that spreads the companies focus out a little too much.

This brings me to my question, it seems like a lot of people are saying they wouldn't mind a reboot of the Joe universe, but how much are you really willing to let go? People have complained about Reloaded and that was a reboot. Do you want a reboot as in starting from the beginning? Are you willing to let previous relationships and plots be completely thrown out the window (ie no ties between SE and Scarlett, no Destro and Baroness being together, no ties between SE and SS)? Because if there is one thing I've learned over the years it's that not everyone is going to like what happens and nowdays they have a better forum to let everyone know about their dislikes.

my favorite character HARDBALL is dead, it sucks really bad. but id never want to see the series redone let the dead joes rest in peace and use the many others that are still alive.KEEP with continuity, id also pick Marvel hopefully they dont bring people back from the dead... i really hate that in comics.

I would like to see an Ultimate approach if there was a reboot. Ultimate Spider-Man was a complete reboot, but a lot of the well known stories were thrown back in with new spins and twists. There is a long history with the comics, but between two companies and 25 years a large amount of characters have been knocked off. If a new company like IDW gets it I would like them to have the full roster to work with.

Keep most of the well known ties that we the fans relate too. No reason to make Duke a Cobra spy or any such nonsense, but also reboot them to modern time and allow new stories to unfold.
